Serenity In Murder – The First Frisson of the World (2011)

Cover Art: This is the first album by Serenity In Murder, a Japanese melo-death metal band which I first discovered a couple months back with their latest album, The Highest Of Dystopia which I thought was pretty damn good so I thought I would check out the rest of their discography. In regards to this album art, I like it alot more than The Highest Of Dystopia, which to me looked sloppy as fuck. What we are seeing here is some ships about to land and what awaits them is some unknown army to do battle, pretty cool. Considering they are a Japanese and all I’d like to think they are fighting off foreign invaders or some shit like that; yea, something like that. If you notice on the left one of the guys has a red cape and shit, lol guess he’s the leader then. Anyways, this band’s logo itself is cool in itself although super confusing, still can barely make out it’s supposed to read Serenity In Murder.

Album Review: While I thought that their latest album was the shit, well, their first in mai opinion was actually even better. Once again these guys and girl, yes I just found out that the main vocalist is actually a women doing the death growls and wow, she is very good at it; I would never have known, I guess a contemporary of  Angela Gossow of Arch Enemy fame maybe? The band shows excellent technical skill and songwriting ability, pretty much every song on this is well written with solid riffs and in many ways much more memorable than their latest offering. Maybe it’s because I feel they used slightly less synth but I’m not sure. I can see why the band continued on, they have got good shit, and once again although nothing revolutionary or new here, they do it well with a handful of extremely catchy tunes such as Defenders Of The Faith, Horn Of Ending, Defamiliarization and Infact Bellum being some of my favorites here.

Overall an excellent album playing solid melo-death metal with heavy synth use.
