So I heard there are these things called loot crates that people subscribe to on a monthly basis where a person/company/or whatever sends you some shit based on what you like.
I always wanted to try one of these services and it came down to either Japan Crate vs Tokyo Treat. Both are similar in that you get Japanese snacks but at the end of the day I decided to go with Tokyo Treat because they had free shipping worldwide and that the owners were legit Japanese, based on what I’ve seen on their website. Japan Crate, while being around longer and more well known than Tokyo Treat, is based in California with the majority of it’s owners being Americans, not to mention I have to pay more for shipping to Canada.
With that said, I signed up to Tokyo Treat on a 3 month subscription plan with each month costing roughly $30 USD per package for the “Premium” box, which has the most shit.
I actually did this 3 months ago starting in March so yea, I am a few months behind and already have all 3 boxes before my renewal cycle.
Better late than never I suppose, here’s what I got from my first box in March:
Box looks pretty cool, well designed and orange.
“Fun & Tasty” Japanese Candy. Hm…nothing suspicious looking here right? Well, I wonder what the markings on the box mean, probably some customs shit or whatever to make sure it’s not drugs or weapons.
When you open the top of the box the flap has this nice illustration welcoming me. Cool, “Open, Share, Enjoy” pretty good to me.
First glimpse at the goods. I see some hello kitty snacks. wut. They also provide a little illustrate booklet telling you what the hell each thing is in English and other fun Japanese stuff, which is cool.
Upon moving the booklet you see some other goods, some bbq ribs corn snack or something?
Inside the booklet has some shit like this, little retelling of japanese folk tales and other notable bait cultural events, for example anime/cosplay explanations. This spread tells the story of Momotaro, some bitch that grew out of a peach and killed some shit whatever.
The full spread of the goods and treats. Pretty nice loot eats we got here. I actually took individual pictures of each item but I’m too lazy to post each one and such so this is good enough with a legend. The book has 2 pages dedicated to telling you what each of these things are and or it’s cultural significant or whatever, but I can’t be bothered with names, let’s just get to the point; was any of this shit good?
1 – This shit was pretty good. It’s like a corn snack, a bit like cheetos but more firm and no cheeze. It has this artifical bbq flavor but it’s still uniquely smokely. Probably one of my favorite items out of this box considering it’s savory. I lik dis.
2 – Some Hello Kitty rice puff shit. I dunno, I didn’t really like these as they were mildly sweet bit still had some salt on them, very airy and like a rice cracker. Not feeling it.
3 – Some caramel corn snack thing. I’ve seen the normal version of these around in stores but this one is supposed to be peach flavor or something. Not bad, but not feeling it.
4 – Some nasty cotten candy looking thing. I still haven’t opened this yet, and it’s been 3 months since I got it. Whatever, probably garbage.
5 – Some wafer filled with strawberry cream shaped like a taiyaki fish. Heh. nice gimmick and all but in the end it’s nothing special. Just wafer with strawberry flavor.
6 – Some gummies shaped as dog paws. Taste like grape, Japanese grape flavor, whatever that means but it is different from the normal grape flavor you would expect. Ok, but not really my thing, too soft and chewy.
7 – Hi-Chew honey and kumquat flavour. I knoe right? I had to look up what a kumquat is and in the end it basically tastes like orange with hint of honey. Ok.
8 – Some rice cracker shit supposedly flavored with tomato and vegetables, the crackers were different colors, implying that each one would taste different. I beg to differ, all shit tasted the same. Whatever, still ate it, still better than the hello kitty rice ball things.
9 – I think there are some kind of cookie or wafer? I can’t remember eating them so maybe I still have them un-eatened, whatever.
10 – Some cookies and cream type biscuit candy. Shit’s pretty good, one of the better things in this box, tastes like privilege.
11 – Can’t tell from photo but this is a melon-favored soda, nothing fancy but it’s pretty good. Taste like honeydew and shit, if they sold this here I would buy more. Good stuff.
12 – Hello kitty bootleg pocky, strawberry flavor. Whatever, nothing special.
13 – Some little pebble like candies that taste like strawberry. At first you think it’s pretty good but as you eat them you get tired of the artificial strawberry taste. Ok, but only like 3-4.
14 – Some stupid DIY candy kit. I think this one is supposed to be be like, hey yo kid, here’s some fruit rollup, make some shapes and shit out of it. Probably not that ghetto but close enough.
15 – Because I got the most expensive “Premium” box they also include a little toy or trinket. What I got here is 1 of 4 sushi magnets. Cool. Got ebi, shrimp sushi so that’s pretty good, at least it’s not like natto or nasty bullshit.
Overall this first box was pretty decent, there was some good shit while a lot of stuff I didn’t really like or care for; everything was very pink and girly; which I am assuming since the theme this time is because of girls day and or the coming pre-sakura season promotional goods.
Score: Nice start, but overall not feeling it.
