So like here we go, it’s my fourth day in NYC and the first full day of Anime NYC, I have a lot of things planned and hope to do but it’s almost impossible to do everything, sacrifices must be made I suppose, so then, to get things started I woke up nice and early at 8am, a full 2 hours before the main doors open into the javits center.
Yesterday I made the mistake of not getting something for breakfast, so what better way to start it off by going to another bagel shop on my way to the convention center. This particular one is not famous or anything, just solid good reviews on google map and is unceremoniously called “Bagels & More on 34th Street” I mean you can’t get any more literal than that.
I decided to go with from what I understand is basically the original inspiration for the mcmuffin and related breakfast sandwiches; sausage, egg and cheese on a bagel. For about $6 before tax this certainly is alot bigger and more bang for your buck value, tastes pretty damn good too lol. I had a small coffee ordered as well so the total after tax came to just under $10. Pretty good shit. There was no seats available in the place so I did take out and continued my walk to the convention center and eventually sat down to eat on some benches midway there. Good shit.
After a moderate wait of maybe about 25 or so minutes outside, the main doors opened at like 10:15am and I was on my way. And no they don’t have any special music or drum crew playing as people entered the building, which is too bad lol.
Knowing what I had to do for today I went straight to the back of the main exhibt hall where the autographs were to collect once again some wrist bands to get autographs. I originally wasn’t going to get it but since they were in mid process signing, I decided to get the autograph for the production staff of Dr Stone, I mean I had won the lottery already, might as well use it. They asked for personalization this time and if I wanted to have Dr. Stone mentioned and I said yes. Luckily they didn’t have any issue signing my shikishi board; they also had a poster to sign but it was kinda shitty so opted for my own item. No comments this time, just nod and smile “arigato gozaimasu” from me for the 3 staff members. Noice.
The autograph that I got, the booth was near the artists alley so I decided to check them out. Nowhere as big as AX for example the artists at Anime NYC are all very high quality, they definitely have some review process to prevent shitty artists they know won’t sell shit and be just an eyesore. I took lots of photos of artists booths but even then I didn’t take them all, just too many and some are just no my interest so ignored.
Having been just to the Hololive Suisei concert the night before I just had to buy this pillow from an artists. When I asked for one without stuffing she said that this was the last one, the display one was actually her last one. lol wow. So yea, I brought the last one, noice. The other side of the pillow is the same image but modified so that she has yandere face/eyes and some blood stains over her lol.
After doing some decent shopping and buying more prints of artists I wanted to buy from It was near time to go to the Hololive Advent panel, there first one at a major convention to the public. Overall I would honestly say it wasn’t the best panel, they had trouble in the first half hour interacting with the audience, even though they could see and hear us. Prior to the panel they had a QR code on the screens that led you to a survey/quiz google forms that you can fill out to answer their questions about New York recommendations. The first half hour all they did was talk amongst themselves and showed the results via a quickly put together power-point like slide show. While interesting, it was not interactive and quite frankly kinda boring. You can tell that around midway, their manager or staff messaged them about this and they began trying to do things to interact with the audience which it then slowly got better. By near the end of the panel they were in a good groove and good interaction with the audience but by then time was up. I’m sure they will get better at this as they get more practice in future conventions and events.
After the panel I made my way back to the main hall and saw this mad lad crazy good gundam cosplay, with Amuro, Char and the Gundam as well. Wow, really cool. There was someone inside the gundam as well, it wasn’t just a prop, they had to be on stilts or something cause man, that’s pretty tall. Most memorable cosplay today.
Just like AX, all around the convention center had banners and ads for upcoming anime, games, movies and whatnot, mostly crunchy roll, aniplex related stuff or the newest shonen stuff/classics like one piece/titan etc. I thought it was nice that they had this big Tsukihime remake banner ad, noice.
Once again they had nonstop hololive content on the big screen live with the audience on the floor which was great, this here being an example of the Indonesia girls doing some game show with the crowd participation.
I noticed that they had food stalls or vendors within the entire space of the convention center. An example here being Nathan’s hotdog, the shit you normally eat at Coney Island which is what it is famous for. Hmm..
I don’t normally regret making purchases, but this one I totally did. Fuck. For over $8 after tax for a single small hotdog no bigger than a small hotdog from like schinders or some shit, this was hardly worth the price. And the worst part of it? It wasn’t even that big or tasted any good or special. I can understand why people can do the Nathan’s hotdog eating contest and eat like 80 of these or some shit, I alone can probably eat like 3-5 myself just to get decently full in one sitting. They are too damn small and the dog itself is so thin compared to what I am used to. Worst purchase I have made in my entire trip so far, shitttt.
I cut out alot of pictures in this mini overview post but I am currently browsing the industry area that is heavy with aniplex, crunchy roll stuff. Of course there is a very big FGO display and booth with various relics on display, just like at AX last year. I can’t remember if they had Excalibur like this there but since there was no line for this and a dude just standing there to help take a picture of it with my phone, sure why not lol.
They also had a booth selling Lycoris Recoil goods and have a nice display setup. Granted that the director and character designer is here, I assume they are trying to promote and push this show hard, hoping they make it into a new media franchise, which I hope they succeed in and not fuck it up. They also had a gaming area with old arcade machines, more industry booths selling stuff like 18+ FAKKU and Jlist/Jast but very very small compared to what they had at AX, they were just ordinary booths like everyone else. Not pictured in the area was also US Army trying to recruit lol, they had setup “that” swole man carnival game where you have to hang off bars for like 2 minutes to win a prize or something. I wasn’t sure if you won anything or if it was just for fun and start a discussion on how if you join the army, you can be swole and do this carival game. I dunno lol.
I went back to the hololive booth and they had FuwaMoco doing an unarchived karaoke stream live for Anime NYC audience. Good shit. I stood there for almost an entire hour or so. The crowd was quite big even for non-hololive fans I think, the scene and spectacle is just too great to not pay attention.
Among the crowd was a number of FuwaMoco cosplayers which once they were finished their karaoke, people dispersed and started taking pictures. Pretty good cosplay.
On one full side of the main exhibit hall on the wall they had like food vendors and stalls, which were very very much so intentionally alyl Asian/Japanese food, ranging from Ramen, Lechon on rice, steamed dumplings, noodles, dim sum, gyoza, okanomyaki and of course takoyaki as pictured above for “Karls Balls” lol jokes name.
I mean with a name like Karls Balls how could I not try it? And honestly, it was pretty good shit lol. Close if not exactly the same quality as when I had them in Osaka, nice and crisp but gooey and hot inside. On the other side of the tent has some words saying “From Osaka to yo Blocka” lol. I was served by Karl himself and yea, he’s Japanese, he knows his shit. lol. Very expensive, for $20 dollars this could have been another bad food purchase but the novelty of having good takoyaki again and it being “Karl’s Balls” now, I can’t really complain lol.
Walking the halls I see this nice Frieren and Himmel cosplayers. Noice. There is actually quite a few Frieren’s around, I just didn’t take photos of them, same for Fern too. Probably best new show of this current season. Good shit.
I went up to what they call the River Pavillion which is basically an entire area owned and promoting Crunchy Roll, which is where the big free concert was going to be held for Cö shu Nie, Hiroyuki SAWANO, SennaRin and Survive Said The Prophet. What you are seeing in this photo is failure. Everyone was so close to being seated but everyone seen here just got cut short, myself included. I mean you could just stand there and hope to be seated if someone leaves but that is doubtful. I have no idea what the stage or seating area looks like, I’ll have to come back tommorow and see for myself what this place for performances and shows actually looks like. While I am a bit sad I didn’t get to see the concert, what makes it a bit worse is that I had to make a choice between trying to get into this or going to the FGO panel with Albert and friends, in which case by the time I gave up the FGO panel was already over. Sadge.
With the unlucky failure of not getting into the concert I at least took a photo from above the River Pavilion, shits weird man, this building and how it’s designed. This is a cool view of part of the main hall area tho. By the time I gave up everywhere else in the con was officially closing at like 7pm I think.
With nothing else better to go to I decided to just leave and head back to my hotel. To prevent myself from more Vito’s Pizza I made an effort to try another one of NYC’s local specialty, one that you can only get in these 24 hour bodega as they call it; the chopped cheese sandwich.
Inside of these kinds of bodega is what is essentially New Yorks version of 24 hour convenience stores except with a live chef/cook available at all times to quickly put together something for you to eat fresh, maybe make you eggs, breakfast, a burger, cheese steak something like that. I think bodega’s are really cool and I haven’t seen anywhere else have something like this, at least not to my knowledge.
When I got back to my hotel with my chopped cheese sandwich this is what it looks like. Pretty good shit. A chopped cheese sandwich is basically a cheese-steak sandwich but more ghetto, instead they take a hamburger patty and then chop it up so it’s like little crispy bits and then mix it with American cheese along with all standard ingredients you might see in a burger like tomato, lettuce or bell peppers like a Philly cheese steak in your choice of “Hero” or “Roll” bread. I chose a “Hero” roll so it’s a bit like a short sub. Honestly, shits pretty good. I can understand why people in NYC say that this is their favorite sandwich unique to NYC. And for less than 10 dollars? Damn it’s good value, it’ll fill you up for sure. For the sake of comparison, 10 dollars can probably buy you a Shake Shack normal burger, this sandwhich feels alot more filling and bang for your buck. Honestly, would again, maybe from a different place that has it, they are scattered all around NYC, just like pizza and bagel joints. Good shit.
I forgot to mention that I also got the autograph from Cö shu Nie just after my Dr Stone autograph. I had to pay $40 in advance for this and they give you a t shirt, a shirt in which they basically encourage you to get signed cause they only allow this, or their cd to be signed which is kind of annoying and strict man. Damn. If I knew in advanced I would have brought their cd instead. Now I have a nice autographed t shirt that I will never wear because it’s signed by the band, just like my Sabaton shirt a few years ago. lol.
All in all despite several failures such as the concert and the hot dog, I still think today went quite well, mainly because I was able to get all my autographs done for today and see the hololive advent panel, even though they are still a work in progress at conventions. I also brought some more prints and mech not highlighted here to that’s always good for me. We’ll then, let’s see what happens in the final full day in NYC and at Anime NYC on sunday. I am running low on cash so I might have to rely on credit card from this point on.
Sunday is always supposed to be a chill day but we’ll see how it goes lol.
