Cover Art: So this album is by Civil War, a band mostly composed of ex-Sabaton members with songs focusing on the American Civil war. The cover art is pretty appropriate, band is called Civil War, album is called Gods and Generals. Yep. Pretty spot on I guess with the union officer on a horse ruining some shit to the confederate army, pretty epic, pretty badass. No complaints here other than the fact that the illustration is too good and should probably be used for a civil war museum or something, yea whatever.
Album Review: Well seeing as how these guys are mainly ex-Sabaton, they sound somewhat similar at least in terms of composition of the songs themselves, the vocals on the other hand, is another story altogether. The genre being played here is power/heavy metal similar to Sabaton obviously but what I find funny is that while there are civil war songs here, there is also WWII songs, a Scottish brave heart song and a song about some swedish war and vikings. Wut. So you call your band civil war, with cover art saying we all about american civil war but then put songs about WWII and Schindler’s List and shit? Ok guys, maybe you shouldn’t have left Sabaton after all, cuz isn’t that what Sabaton does anyways? Write glorious epic songs about all wars/heroes/battles/warmachines? You guys doing the same thing, at least commit to your civil war theme. T
While the songs themselves can be considered standard power/heavy metal with solid drumwork and decent melodies, the vocals are interesting to say the least. Sounds like a old man with an extremely high pitched raspy voice who is like blind and is walking around yelling about how you should respect your elders and shit with complete confidence in his message. I know this is supposed to be power/heavy metal but man, this guy sounds so odd off for me. While the old raspy man may be what they wanted, I’m still not sure if I can accept it, maybe it will grow on me; at least I can understand his words pretty clearly. There are a couple of catchy songs notably USS Monitor, which is about the first ironclad ship ruining shit and Bay of Pigs about America ruining shit but other than that’s it’s hard to find anything else, overall a mediocre album. Cover is bad-ass though.
Score: 5/10
