Metal Review

Obscurity – Vintar (Limited Edition)

Cover Art: This is supposed to be a melodic death band but their main theme is vikings so technically it falls under viking metal, which is actually a thing and based on that alone, the cover art meets those credentials fairly well. Not actually the most epic of scenes but still nevertheless epic. I wonder what the logic was when the illustrator decided to have the viking warriors back turned; normally for this kind of thing they have them facing forward, maybe they are chasing some shit? I’m not a big fan of Obscurity’s logo, it’s convoluted as fuck and looks like there is some drop shadow, oldschool bevel and emboss effect going on, they need to update their shit.

Album Review: Being a band from Germany their lyrics are in German, which is kind of strange since most long running metal bands from Germany usually do English lyrics I guess for the sake of better prospects of international success and such. I wasn’t expecting much from this album and well quite frankly, I got exactly that, a generally mediocre melodic death album with viking vibes going on with nothing particularly memorable. Sure the band has got some good skills but their melodies and riffs I found were very boring and repetitive. Maybe it’s just me taking a liking to more symphonic/synth kind of sound lately but I just found every track on here totally forgettable. The death growls is standard which is fine but overall lacking the punch when I get from “Viking” Metal. A poor man’s Amon Amarth.
