Valkyria Chronicles Selvaria Bles

Background: I’ve had this figure sitting around for about half a year now since I received it in the mail so I’d think it’s time to open it and snap a few pictures and stuff. I think the usual queue is like 3-4 months but depending on how I feel, longer; I actually have a Saber figure I have from 4 years ago that I still haven’t opened yet, yea I know right… but anyways, no rush, no fuss, I don’t have a lot of space anymore and don’t buy as much figures as I used too.

The character here is Selvaria Bles from the 2008 Sega SRPG Valkyria Chronicles originally released on the PS3 almost 7-8 years ago…shit; has it been that long already? Well anyways Selvaria is kind of like the Char Aznble or Darth Vader of Valkyria Chronicles; the super pro right hand man of the emperor but is kind of a good person and is only bad because of you know; life problems/orphan/special powers/outcast/gratitude to main badguy for taking them in etc. Well Selvaria is pretty much the same deal; except she is a woman with silver-white hair, red eyes and big boobs; extremely large boobs.

From what I hear they are “Remastering” the original game for the PS4 with additional content and improved graphics and such; why are they doing this kind of shit still? Well regardless of Sega’s incompetence with dealing with their IPs, I hope that the PS4 version does well enough to show them that there is still a fan base for this franchise and actually make a proper sequel, not shitty PSP games or mobile spin-off games.

The main character designer of Valkyria Chronicles and thus Selvaria is the well known doujin/ero-arist Raita which I think was a bit surprising to a lot of people when the game first came out due to his somewhat… unconventional body proportions. But make no mistake, Selvaria has all of the characteristic trademarks of Raita’s artwork, tall slender body build, long flowing hair, realistic but slightly exaggerated head to body ratios; extremely large breasts. Yep, this is definitely one of Raita’s indeed. It’s a bit of a shame that the box didn’t’ include any indication of the original illustration that this figure is based on, pictured below; but I suppose figure manufacturers do this for a variety of reasons, mainly to cover the differences between them; which is understandable.

Review: There is actually a pretty good number of Selvaria figures out there, some better than others, some horrible pieces of shit. Selvaria was pretty popular a few years back with top figure manufacturers such as Alter, Max Factory and Goodsmile company but despite those figures being very well done, I didn’t get them. They were either too damn bulky with her Valkyrie weapon, or too simple looking, just showing her in her bikini swimwear, which is nice and all, but I wanted something in between. This 1/7 scale figure by Vertex, a relatively new figure manufacturer under their Dwell product line is modeled after the above Raita illustration showing Selvaria in her “Normal” military clothes without her cape scarf thing thus exposing her shoulders and armpits, which is pretty sexy I think.

I didn’t have any problems getting her out of her box and she was very easy to put together, standard double peg with extra re-enforcing peg for good measure to keep her secure to the base. Her head is directly attached to her hair and because of it, it actually sits a bit loose on her body, probably due to the weight of it all being one piece; like if I were to flip her upside down, her head and hair would fall off; a minor annoyance but nothing to get upset about. Her sword is also a separate piece but luckily no problems attaching it to her belt.

From the front view you can get an idea of how big Selvaria’s boobs are but with a slight turn it’s pretty apparent that her bust is just overflowing with jiggly goodness. As such she is designed to be displayed slightly turned from the primary vantage point for viewing. It’s a bit funny how from the front view her facial expression is kinda like yea whatever but from the side she actually looks kind of pissed. Hmm… well she is a kuudere/ice queen kind of character so I guess that’s fine.

As it can be seen, her bust is just as big, if not even a little bigger than her head. But boob comments aside, Selvaria’s sculpt is fantastic. While a simple standing pose, it captures very well Selvaria’s character, a strong willed, proud and capable woman that can ruin your shit if you make her angry.

No visible seam-lines or poorly fit pieces, everything fits well together and better yet, I don’t have to fiddle around with cast-off options or additional accessories or swap-able heads/hands/bodies, everything that was in the box, is displayed here, no extra bullshit pieces for me to lose.

Not a whole lot to look at from the back, except her hair which is very long and looks really strange from this angle; makes it look like she is going to tip over or something. Can’t really say anything about ass here, obscured by hair, although the details of her boots and stocking/leg things are really well done.

The paintwork on this figure is phenomenal. All of the little gold lines on her clothes and stockings are crisp and clean, no messy spills or overages and the base paint they use for each part of her is appropriate. For instance, her shirt I am assuming would be made out of some kind of cloth or soft fabric, thus they use a more dull matte paint while for her stockings, might be made of latex or rubber so they use shiny smooth paint to achieve the effect, likewise for her belt, sword and all of the other little badges and trimmings she has on her uniform. A crappier figure manufacturer might have gone with using the same kind of paint for everything.

Other than her head and a bit of detailing for her shirt cuffs, there isn’t a whole lot of paint shading on this figure; which is fine by me since natural lighting will provide the majority of the effect, since you know, shading for black paint is kind of pointless. Her up close facial expression reveals detailed paintwork that captures the essence of Raita’s illustration, although perhaps not as saturated or bright as the original, which can also be seen in the red used on her overall which is a bit duller.

Overall, I am very happy with this figure and am glad that I waited this long before buying a figure of Selvaria. Everything about this figure is top notch, painting, sculpt and accuracy to original artwork, although it’s a bit hard to tell from my photos due to Photoshop processing and all. If you are a fan of Valkyria Chronicles, either the original game, PSP sequels, mobile game, anime or whatnot and want a Selvaria figure that doesn’t take too much space, is not a swimming suit and looks great then this is the one you should get. Alternatively, if you just like girls with silver-white hair, red eyes, military themed clothing and huge boobs, then that’s fine too. For me, I qualify for both instances; guess dats why I have this figure. Win Win.

Score: I love the boob.
