Background: Himouto! Umaru-chan was probably one of the more hipster and obscure funny anime shows that aired last year and overall I enjoyed it greatly. The premise itself, while probably explained to death by now is about a girl who is basically the most perfect girl ever outside at school and in the public but is actually a lazy bitch at home.
So ya, this is a mini trading figure box set which individually are like 500 yen each or something and you randomly get a mini figure out of a pool of whatever. Basically kind of like pulling/rolling in mobile games or if you want to be oldschool, fucking yugioh and magic the gathering card games, except in toy form.
Unlike scale figures, I open small shit quicker, so guess that’s why I’m here already, not 5 months later doing a overview. So anyways, I brought the whole thing because I can and I like the show. For what it’s worth, you might as well buy the whole box since you’re guaranteed to get all of them instead of playing your luck and possibly getting duplicates, plus if I were to get this here at a convention or whatever, they probably jack this shit up at least double the price, so ya, might as well.
The characters themselves are all super-deformed chibi versions of themselves which appear in the spin-off advertisement anime Himouto! Umaru-chan S, yea I know. With the exception of Umaru, the real show doesn’t actually feature any other chibi characters.
The box contains 8 possible mini figures, 7 of which are displayed already and one “surprise” hidden one, although it’s kind of pointless since you can tell it’s another Umaru. Why did they make 5 Umaru’s and only 3 of her friends? Beats me, although you would expect they would at least try to mix it up and make one of UMR, Umaru’s gaming persona or even her public/perfect girl mode.
Behold, the arrangement of 8 mystery boxes. The boxes themselves are pretty cool looking, shaped as a little house. They have too much tape and shit on them tho, and it’s a bit strange since all of the taped parts are different with each box, maybe that would be one way to determine which is which?
The box is so clever, the top part is built in designed to be part of the display, just like…well every other kind of point of purchase thing I guess…well I guess it’s not so clever after all…
Nice box house. The box also shows all the other possible ones you can get, just in case you forget.
First one opened is Kirie, Umaru’s stalker-like creeper friend who is super shy. She is funny. The figures themselves are really small, like around 1/4 the size of a normal Nenderoid. Well what do you expect for 500 yen. Looks ok to me.
Next one was Sylphynford, Umaru’s hyper gamer rival and ojousama eccentric friend (part-time). I like Sylphynford, she is basically supposed to be a white girl, but since you know, Umaru is blonde, not allowed, guess we gotta go with blue hair and flower shaped pupils for foreigners I guess. Her signature pose is intact, good.
Ok, the first Umaru opened is the best one, the lazy bitch doing nothing pose. This is funny, I like it. What is strange here is that the little plastic stand is totally unnecessary, she stands, or rather lies down just fine without it. According to the box, this can also be used for a instant ramen bowl weight for the lid after you pour water into the thing and wait for the noodles to soften.
Ok got Ebina, Umaru’s shy dumb best friend who’s originally from Akita, basically the countryside and talks with a strange ass accent from time to time and is embarrassed about it. She also has very large boobs, which is officially acknowledged in the show/manga and consequently one the most popular characters from the series due to the pure waifu potential here. I like her too, she’s funny.
Next Umaru is the tantrum, i want gamu pose. I’m not particularly fond of her when she whines like this in the show, but I suppose it makes for a funny toy. Yep, looks funny.
According to the box, this Umaru is the mystery “surprise” one; disappointing really. Sure, she is all happy and shit here but come on Goodsmile Company, can’t you a least make a UMR or normal mode one? Shit.
This one is pretty cute, it’s Umaru with the longcat plush toy and snot sleeping bubble. The snot bubble is kind of shit though, it’s just painted on; it would have been nice if it was actually made out of plastic. Other than that, according to the box this one an also be used as a pen topper.
Ok, last Umaru, this one is the cola and potato chips holding pose. Fuck, too many Umaru’s. I know it’s her show but man, don’t you want to ruin people’s lives by putting crappier characters like her brother, brother’s friend and co-worker? Well, guess not.
The box arrangement. I pretty much did start bottom, left to right moving up. Kind of funny how Umaru’s friends are all at the bottom. Maybe other boxes have it different, or maybe it’s random? guess I’ll never know.
Best of friends.
“I just can’t” while friends(+rival) look on in sadness at the monster known as Umaru.
Boat looks like a giant in comparison to this lazy bitch.
Review: Overall I am pretty happy with this collection of mini trading figures, although they are very small, it’s what I would expect from something that would cost 500-800 yen. In terms of quality, the sculpts are well defined and the paintwork good enough, you can’t really compare these to a scale figure or even Nenderoids or Meddichus but even then they are definitely better than what you can normally get from any standard Gatcha machine.
Score: So funny.
