Anime Review Fall Season

Fall 2016 Anime Part IV

So I heard you like sports and shows about school club activities? No? Maybe have a taste of huge boob girl with Occultic;Nine? How about mini-shows? There’s tons of mini shows this season? Whatever, shit’s alright.

Long Riders! – This show is basically the same thing as cute girls motorcycle anime Bakuon! except this time the girls are just on regular bikes, which the former show made fun of as being wussy and weak. Hmm. I suppose it’s the other perspective in the same kind of genre, basically you can’t go wrong. So we have main girl, she is dumb but wants to do something, she is in college. She and her cyclist friend which looks like Mio from K-ON! suggests maybe riding bikes. Main girl is all like, I dunno about that, shit seems hard, then see sees the ugliest looking bike I’ve ever seen and goes like omg that bike is so cute. Wow, what the fuck? That bike that she likes is like a fold-able bike and looks like shit. Whatever, after that main girl and Mio clone go to bike store and buy that ugly ass fold-able bike, like only 25 bucks since it’s so shit. They later practice and ride long distance but main girl was dumb and didn’t’ eat anything, collapses from lack of energy/food. A couple of other girls show up and give her some energy bar or something, main girl is feeling better now. New friends all go to dairy farm and eat ice cream, they all go to same university, wow surprised. For what this is, it’s good, decent designs, basic concept and basically the same formula for moe cute girls doing <insert hobby/sport> and having fun. Yes, I’ll probably end up watching this.

Stella no Mahou – Last season’s New Game! was probably one of the best slice of life moe cute girls working anime this year and I miss it; however, this show is very similar and I welcome it fully. Following the similar formula, main girl doesn’t know what she wants to do for a club in highschool. She and her friend go walk around on the first day of school to check out the shit. As expected she meets the homemade or doujin game club which consists of a total of 3 girls. Main girl and friend chat and play the game they made, they are impressed but ultimately walk away. Main girl is all like, man what am I gonna do, looking back at every year in her life and realizes that there is no consistency in her interests or hobbies. She then realizes that when she was little she always liked making up board games and shit and decides to join the game making club, running back to the booth/stand and shit. So ya, that’s the premise of the show and a shoe in for my to watch list. Way done before concept but the pacing, characters and funny tone of the show keep it solidly moe slice of life material. Good shit.

3-gatsu no Lion – This show. I have no idea what the hell is going on but I kind of like it. So we have main dude, let’s call him Shin, because it seems like he loves to run away. So anyways, Shin is a pro shogi player already and he’s only in highschool. However, fucking Shin has some kind of inner demons or mental problems haunting him, causing the world appear to him as ultra super artsy and hipster, crazy ass dream-like sequences and hyperbole imagery of inner self. Shit. Shin wakes up in his empty apartment, drinks some shit and dresses, goes outside. Walks to some place, is apparently a shogi hall or something, says a few words to an old man, apparently his shogi teacher or something, plays, owns that bitch. Wins. Shin doesn’t give a shit, always looking sad and depressed goes out. Shin then goes into some house, there are 3 girls in it, all sisters from like elementary, middle school and maybe college level. Then out of nowhere the tone of the show turns into happy fun times with the sisters doing funny stupid shit with Shin being all like, oh mai, oh dear, oh u. What you think is some kind of life psychological drama is thrown out the window and in it’s place is jokes slice of life hi-jinks? What the fuck.  Then as they are eating dinner on the TV it basically says that Shin’s dad was murdered and the police suspect it is him. Wut the? Some more shit happen but yea. I dunno, this show was so artsy and hipster at first that it threw me off, I really don’t know what to expect which I suppose is good? Interesting mysterious concept, happy fun times with sisters, genius boy shogi player with a dark past/history/mental, “I killed your dad” possible future moments, good character designs and animation and tone/pacing. Will watch more and see.

Occultic;Nine – Apparently based off a light novel with the author being the same guy who wrote Steins;Gate I wasn’t expecting much going in and going out I was moderately pleased. So the flow of the show takes on the perspective of different characters, doing a variety of occult or stupid shit. Main dude is some faggot that runs a paranormal blog and just basically re-blogs other fags work. Main fag is friends with some other girl, she is very happy and visits him in the cafe where he is stationed. She has extremely large breasts in the most realistically depicted manner possible, you know, boobs that are so big that it looks like her belly is fat because her shirt can’t snug tightly enough to her body for it, so it’s loose. Probably voiced by Ayane Sakura doing her Shimakaze voice, good shit. There are other characters like a goth fortune teller girl, some occult newspaper girl/agency, some idol girl who just happens to be in main fags school, some other guys which are forgettable but probably important. In any regard, basically main dude finds some dead body and it’s assumed that all the characters are somehow involved or are part of a bigger story or conspiracy at play. The End. Yea, pretty Stein’s to me. The animation and character designs; with the exception of the girls and the huge boob girl, is extremely trippy and unrefined. The lines are so jaggy I would think they were sketches sometimes and the pacing leaves much to be desired, often suddenly switching to another person’s story without any cues or whatsoever, making it a bit confusing at times what the hell is going on. I dunno, maybe watch another episode for the sake of boobs, but I don’t see myself finishing this. Decent maybe.

Udon no Kuni no Kiniro Kemari – Watching this, it’s in. So main guy is allegedly a web designer. He goes back to his hometown because his mother/father is dead, can’t remember. He needs to help with things and clear out the house and shit. His family used to run a udon shop. This udon shop as he finds out from people around town was very popular and well loved, even featured in tourist guides and shit. But main guy is firm on telling them it will be closed for good, because he never wanted to take over the family business to begin with and was one of the reasons why he went away to Tokyo in the first place. Ye. As he is cleaning out the restaurant, he sees some little girl sleeping with a bag of flour. Guy is all like what the hell and the little girl runs away stealing the bag of flour. The girl comes back later to the shop and the guy is all like, hey, where’s your parent and shit. The kid doesn’t seem to talk much but appears hungry so he goes inside to give her food but she ends up eating raw udon noodles. Main dude is gonna go report the kid to the police and turns on the television, sees some crazy ass communist looking kids show, mesmerizes the kid. As he is walking to the station some priest dude is all like, oh, I’m so glad that the father is around for this kid, cause you never know, there are legends of tanuki shapeshifters taking the form of humans and living for a very long time in the village and such. Fast forward a bit and basically ye, the the little girl is a tanuki and de-transforms back to animal mode full on furry mode. shit. Well, slice of life win is here. Rural hometown? Check. Misguide/directionless youth? Check. Cute little kid to make things funny and happy? Check. Town full of jolly villagers? Check (tentative). It’s all here. Win.

Soul Buster – Another Chinese source material mini-show, this time from a game I believe. Basically Wen-Hu or whatever doesn’t like history and shit but has dreams about the old Han dynasty emperor coming back to life or something as a zombie. Some crazy shit happens and goes into some portal thing where some little gremlin jew magical creature tells him the usual, pick a card and that will be your destiny. Goes back to normal world, as some teacher or whatever is all like, yo Wen-Hu give me your card you just got. Wen-Hu is all like, no man, why should I. Then the teacher busts out his card and summons some warrior from the three kingdoms era of china, you know, liu bei and friends. Not sure what guy teacher summons but he’s big and buff with some axe thing. Wen-Hu is all like oh shit and accidentally throws his card on the ground and ends up summoning Zhou Yu, except he is a hot girl in armor with white long hair. Of course. So yea, this is basically ghetto Chinese fate stay night mobile card game edition with dynasty warriors/three kingdoms shit. So Chinese. For what it is, I was moderately entertained, mainly due to the fact that the subs used the Japanese equivalent translations/romanization of Wu, Wei and Shu kingdoms and warrior names, for instance Shuuyu = Zhou Yu? Not really an expert on this matter but it was fun trying to figure out who is who. Decent designs but animation leaves much to be desired, they have this shitty overlay filter texture at all times and it’s really shitty distracting, it’s like they forgot that some layers should only be applied to the background. Shit. Might watch more, just because Guan Yu is in it and he’s mai boi.

ClassicaLoid – Haven’t had enough history guys yet? Well this time we got music history guys, in particular classical music guys Mozart and Beethoven re-imagined as modern dudes doing some magical music shit for some girl. I dunno. Girl has this big house, her grandma owned is but is dead now, gonna sell it cause yo, I dont’ need this house. Has gay boy as a friend, kinda lives and puts shit in this house. For some reason 2 dudes also live at the house, the modern Mozart and Beethoven cause I dunno, whatever. So they do stupid shit for about 15 minutes, then main girl gets emotional and calls to tear the house down cause memories or feels whatever. Shit is about to happen but Mozart and Beethoven have some fruity revelation and they kinda transform into some magical clothes and do magic things to the house where dead spirits arise and dance, girls dead granma ghost shows up and is all like, yea, you shouldn’t blow the house up. After some special effects the demolition team be derping and goes away. Main girl is liek yea, I wanna save this house now. Cue cut-ins of other modernized composers plotting to fight Mozart and Beethoven as badguys. Ye. this show is shit, nope, bad idea ugly designs and for women, shitty women with no taste. Bad.

Sengoku Choujuu Giga – Some crazy ass mini show about the lives of historical figures from the Sengoku era with Nobunaga and friends except portrayed as animals on what appears to be animated on a old school printed art scroll or parchment. For example, Nobunaga is a cuckoo bird with a gun and Hideyoshi Toyotomi is a monkey wearing gold. Very style, very artsy, very funny and humorous much. Will probably watch more. Shit.

Girlish Number – Anime voice actors, this is what this show is about, or rather, the real side/dark side of it. Conceptually it’s similar to  that other show last year about wanna be a voice actor but this time the perspective is a little more jaded and down to earth, not so romanticized. So we got main girl, she is a newbie voice actor, she is getting shitty roles with one liners like , “oh wow, you don’t say” as Girl A or some shit like that. Main girl is pretty cute, kinda dark-purplish hair but has lots of inner thought of whats going around, contrary to the front that she and all other voice actors have to put up so she is talking shit in her mind. hmm. The start of this show have main girl and other voice actors being at an anime release event with each of the girls showing more of their “real” or dark side, like cursing another girl in her mind for saying the thing she wanted to say or seriously reminding each other the scheduled routine for the post performance and dance etc. Shit feels pretty serious real at time yo. Shit. Basically this shit goes on for the majority of the episode with many characters, even the main girl concluding that this business is messed up. lol. She ends up getting a main role for a light novel anime adaptation which is all about idols and shit, meaning she will be forced to perform and dance, but thing is that she hates light novels and apparently so does the rest of voice actors. lol wut. pretty hardcore look down upon authors, wow; considering that the source material for this is a “novel” not “light novel”. hmm, industry biased hate? Either way this show is pretty good, I like behind the scenes kind of anime shows and the girls are cute, probably some drama in store but we’ll see. Good animation, concept, character designs.

Watashi ga Motete Dousunda – Hana, let’s call her that, is a standard fujoshi, rotten. She is fat and all she thinks about is pairing and shit for all the gay men she sees around her. From anime, games, to even the boys she sees at school. Hana, is largely ignored and harassed at school because she is fat and speaks fat, a unique dialect that I have never heard before spoken in length. It’s something you really have to hear to truly experience. At least Hana has a good friend who is also rotten, and they all go around being rotten together and shit. However, one day her favorite animu husbando dies. This leaves her in shock and in depression mode for like a week or so, not going to school, staying in bed all day and not eating any meals. After some time her brother (also gay) and mother decides enough is enough and break open the door to her room to drag her out. When she finally pulls off the sheets they see a beautiful girl underneath the cover and are like wtf. Hana gets up because of this and goes to the washroom, looks into the mirror and is all like, who is this person? lol. Is this an illusion? Also her fatty voice is gone and replaced with a standard girly voice. She looks like Nozomi from love live, so purple hair with twin braids. Nice. So basically after a week fatty ends up loosing a ton of weight from being depressed and has become a beautiful bishojo girl. The results are expected when she goes back to school with everyone not recognizing her and all the boys which once teased her now noticing her. lol shit. Even her friend had a hard time believing it at first. Jokes begin when all of the boys try hitting on her and asking her out as she tries to suppress her rotten mind, seeing gay boy potential in all of them. They all go on group date with the end result is that she can’t resist her natural otaku nature and reveals it to the guys by buying some limited edition gay anime merch dakimakura of the character that she loved, who is now dead. The guys end up still liking her regardless and she is happy now but I suppose they learn more about the way of the gay from her if they are expected to date her. Shit. This show is pretty jokes. The concept alone is pretty funny and it has great funny/chibi faces, Hana’s fat voice is pretty funny too, shit. It’s for women but the character designs and guys all look pretty good, probably end up watching this and see how it goes. Show’s localized name is “Kiss Him, Not Me” or literal translation: “What Should I Do? I’m Popular”. lol.

There’s a few shows still to come and a few others that I forgot about but either way, I don’t think they will have much of an impact on my watching habits this season.

Overall this season is decent, there are a large number of sports related or sports themed shows and an abundance of <insert club> fun times slice of life shows. Surprising, literally no real mecha except for Gundam and the Regalia restart and not much “action” shows other than sequels and such.

Probably gonna watch Kaijuu Girls, Stella no Mahou, Shakunetsu no Takkyuu Musume, Gakuen Handsome, Keijo!!!!!!!!, TO BE HERO, Ani Tore! XX, Cheating Craft, Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku, Sengoku Choujuu Giga, Brave Witches, WWW.Working!!, Udon no Kuni no Kiniro Kemari, Long Riders!, Drifters, Girlish Number, Watashi ga Motete Dousunda. So a lot of shit to keep my eye on, not sure if I can keep up with everything, only time will tell but I should manage, half of those are mini shows. Might even watch crappier shit like Tiger Mask and more wildcards like Occultic;Nine and 3-gatsu no Lion.
