Anime Review Winter Season

Winter Anime 2020 Overview

K boiz, here it is, Winter 2020 anime overview, something like 3-4 weeks overdue but whatever, this is what we have today, more gay shit, sequels, isekai, animal things and some unique stuff going on. Something for everyone I think, maybe.

Darwin’s Game – This is a ok show but to me it takes itself too seriously so that makes it kinda shit in my eyes. When you have to release the first episode and it’s 50mins instead of 3 separate episodes in order for your viewers to not auto drop a show because the first episode is shit or makes no sense/seems excessively generic and bland then something is wrong. Indeed, this show to sum it up is basically battle royale survival game where if someone downloads some mobile game and starts playing you have to kill other people who downloaded the game too. Players get some special ability and of course our main protag here is taking a page out of faggot emiya shirou and is basically archer and can summon/synthesis anything he wants, he’s just so stupid he doesn’t realize it yet. The first half of the episode is whatever, then the second half introduces his eventual main blond girl or slave, the girl that can summon chains and projectile them, which he beats and so forth servant/master kinda bullshit fare. There is really nothing here for me to continue watching further, the char designs are ok but forgettable, done before premise and plot, pretty good animation for action but nothing else. Some may like but not for me.

Koisuru Asteroid – Boring ass slice of life show about a girl who wanted to discover an asteroid with a boy she met in the summer when she was little/elementary school years ago. Said girl eventually gets to high school and is saddened that the astronomy club has been merged with the geology club due to lack of members. She quickly discovers that there is a girl in the club that has the same objective that she does, to discover an asteroid and name it. You can kinda get what’s happening here, surprise surprise, the girl is actually the boy from our main girl’s childhood, opps, thought you were a boy, now your a girl, I guess i’m gay now. Ok then. Yea, this show is a tough call since it’s the only first episode but I am sure it has varying levels of yuri women gay which is fine, but I suspect it will only be mild like most slice of life shows. Kinda slow not for me, uninteresting characters, poor subject matter. Pass.

Magia Record – This is a kind of spin off side story based off a madoka rebellion movie that came out a year or two ago featuring a new magical girl that is pink haired that wears a hoodie and uses a crossbow. It’s not bad, but considering that i haven’t watched the movie and it appears to me that this show kinda picks up where that ended it’s a bit confusing although not much, the show gives you enough info and eludes to what happened in the movie to not really require it but it definitely helps if you did watch it. The characters are typical THE OCEAN style with nice wide heads and fuzzy lines trademark of the character designs from madoka and it’s character designer/illustrator but overall despite being a moderately interesting first episode, I doubt I will continue this show. It’s kinda hard to believe that madoka originally aired in Jan 2011, that’s like 9 years ago, holy shit. I suppose if they want to continue the legacy and fr9anchise, they gotta keep going and write/create new stories. Cool, but not really my thing. Maybe watch, but highly unlikely unless later on people say this is like the best shit of the decade, but we’ll see.

Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na! – A very conceptual show about a bunch of girls in school that love anime and animation in general, one loves character design and the other loves world/setting/technical/mecha design and some other derp girl who is indifferent and is just their friend. They go on about their days fantasizing about what kind of anime they can make with their combined talents in drawing and design and dream of creating the perfect anime one day, which I’m sure they try to do in the show. While “conceptualizing” and sharing their ideas, the show goes into intense visualization imagination hyperbole metaphor mode, basically their concepts become real and they plan an anime action scene on the fly while making improvements and such as they narrate it and act in it. It’s an interesting show but it has several critical flaws, one being that the main characters are BUTT ugly, god damn they are so ugly. The studio spent money, on everything else but the character designs of this show. So ugly and unlikable in general, this is not like Shiro Bako where all the girls are attractive and likeable visually good design, I’m talking like flat ass hair, deadpan expressions and lazy form. This is a kind of show which if you like anime, it’s easy to say is good because it’s about people and creators making anime, but at the same time, it feels self-serving and pandering to the point where it seems like the director/producers in general are like saying to themselves “awww yeaaa bitch, you like that don’t you, you better, it’s my brilliant design/concept after all, it should’ve been animated all along,” as a self validation of their own superiority in their knowledge of anime and what they is consider “good”, overly pretentious and egotistical. Not fun for me, boring, nope.

ID INVADED – This show is interesting. The best way to describe it is basically inception except trying to solve crimes and or find murderers while they are still conscious and aware all the while people are observing the mind of the murderer. Yea, it’s kinda hard to explain and is pretty confusing at least that’s what i got after 3 episodes. Yes, this is another one of those shows that released the first 3 episodes in order for people to not auto drop and it kinda makes sense too here because the concept is fairly complex. After the first episode of trying to figure out what’s going on you loosely get an idea of what’s happening, but not really. The show’s main protag is ok and has a nice voice, the same voice actor as Ogata from “Winter Gold” or whatever that show was called about Ainu pre-WWI times in hokkodio and there is a cute girl who may or may not live after getting owned but we’ll see. The animation is unique and the world fairly stylized, at least when they are in the guys mind. The premise is interesting although indeed confusing, we’ll see about this show, maybe watch more.

Somali to Mori no Kamisama – Ohhh yeaaa this is the gud shit that I have been waiting for. Slice of life travel journey fantasy show featuring a sentient stone golem and a little human girl in a world where monsters and otherworldly creatures are the vast majority of civilization and live in harmony while  the human race is almost extinct due to them getting owned by everyone else in the past. The voice of the stone golem is Daisuke Ono, aka the same voice actor as Jotaro Joestar from JoJo’s bizzare adventure stardust crusaders, aka mr badass kenshiro MKII, so you can kinda tell that this is already looking good. The human girl is all by herself and since humans are almost extinct, the golem decides to bring her to where other humans are, where ever that may be, thus the journey. Everything about this show is very well done, the world is detailed and robust with colors and style, rich in lore and fantasy, very magical I suppose you can say and the animation and background/music aid to that sense of whimsical fantasy world. Chill show but will probably have some hard times with drama and cute moments i suppose. Good shit, will watch for sure.

Pet – Some hidden gay shit involving esper/psychic or mind-readers manipulating people when they are retarded children and communicating with them so that they become un-retarded and become tools for gangster illustion jedi mind tricks insanity when they grow. The show starts off with some mysterious spirit man speaking to a retarded child in a mental home and talks to him through his mind, realized and says some shit like your not alone. Fast forward like 8-10 years later and that retarded child is no longer retarded and has become full blown gangster hoodlum with piercings and dyed shaved blonde hair. lol wut. Then another gay story unfolds about some gay couple renting in some black guys bar, but the black guy is actually a criminal helping steal cars and witnesses a murder/suicide but then the two gay guys are actually gay gangsters and have jedi mind tricks and make the black guy insane and then they wipe his mind and remembers nothing. Yea, pretty gay. Not good at anything, who is this for??? Shit show.

Murenase! Seton Gakuen – Wow, there seems to be a few shows about animals/cats and or beast people this season, and this is one of the first ones that I watched. Is it good? Not really, it’s kinda shit. The premise is fairly simple, there is a school filled with hybrid animal-human people, or demi-human monsters I suppose, doesn’t this sound familiar? So yea, with that said for some reason there is like only a handfull of humans, of course one of them is our main protag fag boy and some other girl of moderate interest in. Shit happens, girls are humanoid-with only ears and tails being their only animal trait while boys gets the full on discrimination full body animal filthy beast treatment, of course a la other isekai shows but whatever. More shit happens and the main animal girl, a fox or wolf girl I believe befriends our main faggot and wants to make him apart of her “pack” or family of friends or whatever. Yea, this is a shit show. Everything about the show seems budget and rushed with no consideration for anything, even if it’s supposed to be a comedy and dumb, it’s just shit. Shit voice acting for the wolf girl and everyone, poor animation and character designs. However, it’s a show shit I can kept up with it while doing daily mobile runs so just for that fact I might watch more of this.

Heya Camp – Oh yea boi, small mini show spin-off of camping chill slice of life comfy anime Yuru Camp, or “Winter Camp” a high ranking show in previous years. This is very short but it basically follows the main girl and some of the camp club traveling around various spots in the local region doing a stamp rally and visisting tourist places and or scenic places.

number24 – Gay sports show about either soccer or rugby. Gay show for women, turned off within 5 minutes. Nop.

Itai no wa Iya nano de Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu – This is a fun semi isekai show about a girl who decides to play the hottest VR online game and is introduced to it via her friend from school which is also apparently a pro gamer. Her friend has to study for exams or something and can’t play with her so our main girl, let’s call her Mashuu decides to give it a run herself. She builds a character and not knowing much about games, chooses the shielder class and giver her no other stat allocation other that to defense/vit. So she’s derping around trying to make the best of things and in this game, the more you get beat up or do something you get skills. She gets beat up by a ton of monsters and eventually gains ultimate defense and status resist skills since she can just tank it. She basically becomes an OP godly tank that no one can do damage too. lol. The premise of the show is simple enough and doesn’t go into full on iseaki mode, it’s still a game and the characters interact outside of the fantasy world. Decent animation, joke mashuu shielder anime, main girl is funny and jokes and ok character designs. Will probably watch more. Not bad.

Plunderer – This show can basically be summed up as Inuyasha V2, or at least that’s how I saw it. So we have this little girl in a fantasy-semi-modernish world, her mother is dead and gave her this ball that has a number on it, something like 3000 or whatever and told her before she died to search for the “Legendary Aces” or something like that, heroes from the past war, not sure why but that’s what she said. Years go by and our main blue haired fair maiden is a wanderer looking for one of these legendary aces and is now a teenager-ish. The world is explained that they have some system like, whatever you do, or whatever is important to you there is a visible number/tattoo/mark on a person’s body indicating that value, like how many people you served, how much money you made, how many eggs you ate, whatever. Basically some shit happens and these numbers can be stolen by other people in like duels or gambles between people for bets or what not. More shit happens and yea, girl is in trouble and is saved by one of the legendary heroes, yea. Without fully summarizing everything, this show’s world is fairly interesting but not interesting enough for me to watch more, the girl is fairly attractive and the main hero guy is cool but it seems just a bit too generic and base. I think this show is targeted towards girls but is pretty unisex. Not bad but unlikely to watch more.

Nekopara – Oh boy, do you like cats? This show is all about cats, or rather, humanoid cat girls, the show makes it clear from the very beginning that when they refer to “cats” they are talking about cat girls, I don’t think this world acknowledges the four legged creatures as cats, nor do they even exist. Based on the very popular ero-game/visual novel series of the same name, I became aware of this franchise due to the obviously very cute “cats” and the merchandise available/ presence online, from there I know that all-ages versions of the games/volumes were released and was even translated officially into English and there was a kick starter to fund an OVA anime. I suppose you can say a full anime was inevitable considering it’s popularity, but still I am surprised by how fast this franchise turned mainstream seeing as how it was originally an adult visual novel with figures of Chocola and Vanilla and other merch everywhere only after a few years. It feels weird, kinda like what has happened with the Fate franchise over many years but except so much quicker. Aside from it’s history and background, the show itself is a great cute slice of life moe show filled with cats and other jokes, daily living things. The animation is top notch and the character designs very pretty and cute. Lest to say, I will watch this for sure. Good shit.

Nanabun no Nijyuuni – Idol show about a bunch of girls selected to be a new idol group but they are all weird and have traits and so forth. Main girl is an introvert but for reasons she is recruited by some agency guy even tho it’s so shady. So a bunch of girls show up at the specified meeting place and are guided towards some tunnel under the zoo or whatever, pretty sketch. They open the door and it’s an underground modern idol training facility built just for them to practice and grow. They are then shown the special room with “the Wall” a mysterious ornamental mirrored wall that the organization obeys with it spitting out instructions and directions via paper. That is also how the girls were chosen, “the Wall” choose them for some reason, and yea, that’s the show. Yeaaaa, I dunno about this one, at the one side it’s unique cause this mysterious wall thing is going on and on the other, it’s still just idol shit. Not bad girls on a slight twist to an old formula but probably not for me. Pass.

Infinite Dendrogram – Some isekai bullshit where boi plays a nice VR game, but shits so real, if npcs die they die forever in the game. Whoa. So yea, that’s the main pull for this show. We have a main faggot boi who when creating his character modeled himself and his brother of some sorts decided to be a giant bear species class. Yea, they go do dumb shit and fight monsters and quests, but the NPCs are so real and smart, they are just like real players so yea our boi goes out of his way to save NPC characters because of course he does. At the end of the show he summons his magical sword which also happens to be sentient and transforms into a cute magical looking girl who can also fight for him, a la pokemon or soul eater what not. Ehhh, the show isn’t bad but it certainty isn’t amazing, the magical girl design is ok but nothing special and the boi is annoying as fuck and his bro, being whatever comic pro relief. So I’d say no, stay way from this one unless you are desperate to consume trash.

Hatena Illusion – This is some trash show about a boy who made friends with a girl when they were young and the boy said some shit about I wanna be a magician or something cause the girl is in a family that does magic and shit. Fast forward a number of years and that same boy is now going to live at the girls mansion/house to study magic, for some reason the main girl thought all along that when they were kids the boy was a girl, so yea, that was a surprize and she doesn’t like it anymore and wants him out. He magic father shows up and is like, hey boi, live here and study magic but I gotta go, see yea kid and goes to work abroad for magic shit. Ok sure whatever, more stuff happens and it turns out the magic is real and the main girl is actually a sort of magical girl thief and goes out at night and does shit or whatever. Hmm. Concept is ok but not feeling the characters or pacing/direction it’s going, animation kinda budget. Not really for me, pass.

Oshi ga Budoukan Ittekuretara Shinu – Oh boi this idol show is quite different indeed, while it is indeed an idol show, the main characters are not the idols themselves, but rather their hardcore fans, in particular, one female fan which is like the number 1 fan of this particular girl in the group, whose color is salmon pink. What you get here is a jokes comedy slice of life insiders look at hardcore idol fans and the shit they have to go through or do to meet/greet/line up for shit for sake of their favorite idol group and girl. What is interesting here is that the idols themselves, in terms of design are very unique, it’s kind of hard to describe, they have a kind of same face going on but it seems more feminine? With a dash of 80’s style? Not sure but it’s nice. The main girl, or rather, the main fan is super hype and jokes and is the main reason why you watch this show, great voice acting from her, which is the same voice as Hibiki from “how heavy are your dumbbells”, the new half egyptian-japanese voice actor which i like. I think there may be some drama later on in the show between the main fan and her favorite girl but on a surface level it’s fun times jokes. Good shit, good concept, good designs, good animation, will watch more for sure.

Uchi Tama – Uchi no Tama Shirimasen ka – This is a show about a bunch of animated cats and dogs doing pet things in the world but they are anthropomorphized into humanoid cat-boys and dog-boys and girls. Make no mistake, like nekopara, they are cats and dogs, it’s just that the show switches them to their more human form whenever it is more convenient or cute for the viewer, which is easy to say, is mainly targeted towards women as the vast majority of the cats and dogs are boys. For what it is, it’s a decent concept and nice slice of life for some but a little weird since they are indeed, four legged beasts, unlike nekopara, which are bipedal beautiful “cats” and never change. Not bad, but not fur me.

Rikei ga Koi ni Ochita no de Shoumei shitemita – This is a nice love comedy slice of life smart show featuring basically a guy and a girl, both in university and they work in a science lab as they are both “science types” that don’t admit that they like each other, or rather, they cannot accept love and want to quantify it and prove to each other through experiments and analysis that they do in fact like each other. lol jokes something like that. This show is very similar to last year’s kaguya-sama love is war comedy except the vessel that drives the show is science which is both educational and jokes because they try to science something as quantifiable as love and reach dumb/anecdotal conclusions. The main girl and guy are both attractive, handsome and beautiful folk which easily makes this a good watch for both girls and guys as there is something for everyone. There are other characters which also drive the show, such as our “chika” girl, the third wheel that acts as something like a mediator and voice of common sense between the two and pains at how dumb the two mains are conducting themselves when they clearly are in love as the “normal” girl. There is also a sleepy short senpai girl who is of course a pro gamer and smarter than everyone and a handsome player looking guy that says he gets all the girls but in reality is just a hardcore otaku that uses visual novels/dating sims as his point of reference for giving relationship advice. As it can be seen, the key characters and dynamics are very similar to Love is war except for science and in university. This is a good show, good designs, concept and animation, story although sometimes hard to follow because they explain alot of science shit and it’s easy to miss something. Good shit.

Runway de Waratte – This is an interesting show about a high school girl who strives to be a famous fashion model because her father owns a prestigious fashion design company; she has the looks and the personality but she is lacking one thing: height, she’s just too short for what is required/considered standard height to be a fashion model. Cue in sadboy wannabe fashion designer that goes to her school that is part of the sewing club, by himself, he dreams of going to design university post high school but his family is poor and can’t afford it, or rather he is self sacrificing himself for his 2 younger sisters which are very smart so that he can work out of high school and save money so that they can go to university. Ya ya, sure sure, through a chance meeting and various circumstances the two meet and good shit happen for both of them, not in a romantic sense cause the gay is like gay but good towards getting closer to their goals/dreams. Yea ok sure. This is a not bad show but it’s not for me, to me is looks like after the first epsidoe the show can end and everything is resolved but of course there is going to be problems and such and from what I read in comments, the girl pretty much further re-enforces herself as an entitled bitch in that she treats the sadboy so poorly and shit etc. Not bad animation and design, concept but not for me, pass.

Housekishou Richard-shi no Nazo Kantei – Gay. Some story about a man who has some jewel he got from his dead grandmother and goes to Richard to appraise it to see what it’s worth. He finds out that it was stolen but he already knew that and wanted to see how pro Richard is. Richard is a blonde blue eyed aryan boi from Europe that originates from India/sri-lank and wants to start an appraiser business in japan. So shit happens and both gay boys are happy because they find out the mystery and find the original owner of the jewel and it’s story and in the end hoodlum grandma man gets to keep his jewel. More gay shit happens and Richard invites him to work for him because, you know, gay. Yea this show is not bad but it’s not for me. Shit character design, good pacing/story but just too gay. Nope.

Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun – An interesting show about a girl who encounters a magical spirit ghost youkai thing in the school toilet. Yea, you know how it is, it’s just like in harry potter with ghost girl in the toliet or even in general the toliet ghost Hanako in japanese urban legend stuff. Except for this show they make it so that Hanako is a boy, so yea, you can see something going on here. The main character of this show is some pathetic girl who just wants to fall in love, to anyone basically, even if she doesn’t even know the guy or whatnot, which is kinda what the what. But in any case shit happens, main girl goes to toliet to make a wish to Hanako, shit fails or rather she fails and through more shit basically becomes an assistant/bound to the toliet boi and mild hijinks and soforth. The main draw to this show is the art style, which is very unique, bold colors, thick lines and flat yet textured environments and shading, unique almost chibi like proportions for character designs. However, unique comes at a cost, as the animation in this show is basically very bare bones and minimal, making use of almost power point level transitions and scene framing with just talking. It’s a shame really, aside the shit animation show itself is interesting but is very obviously targeted with a female audience in mind, not for me. Pass.

Oda Cinnamon Nobunaga -Mini about about what if Nobunaga and many other fedual warlords in the warring states period were re-incarnated as dogs. Yea, this is what this show is about, kinda bullshit and whatever dumb. Pass.

Fate Grand Order – Absolute Demonic Front Babylonia – The continuation of last seasons, FGO babylonia anime and it seems to be rolling good. Not much else to say other than the first half was very good with better than expected animation and storytelling, hopefully this ladder half is good as it’s all drama and action battles going forward. Good shit.

Boku no Tonari ni Ankoku Hakaishin ga Imasu – Started the show, turned if off after less than 5 minutes. Hard pass, some shit about a bunch of gay boys doing stupid shit at school because whatever, not even good or handsome or funny. Nope.

Ishuzoku Reviewers – Oh boy, this show.  This show. Holy shit they actually did it. This show, is a show about a bunch of fantasy world dudes living the adventurer life and make a living by going to the local red light districts filled with brothels and checking out hos, or rather, hos of different species such as elfs, faries, cat girls, demon girls, slime girls, plant girls, furry girls, bird girls, minotaur girls you name it; having sex with said fantasy species, then chronicling their experiences and publishing their reviews in the local pub for money. Lol wow. What a show indeed. You would think that the show would have budget animation or something but the animation in this show is very strong, like very bouncy strong, a level which honestly I think is surprising considering the subject matter and story. The group of “reviewers” or primary patrons of the red light districts consist mainly of a human dude, a smallish elf dude, small halfling hobbit a boy angel hermaphrodite and some other extra guy usually, such as a beatman/lizardman/snakeman etc. As a comedy experience I found it pretty jokes and entertaining but beware of censors, as it is very heavily censored for obvious reasons. At the time of this writing the first few episodes they got away with like light rays and a combination of sticker stamp kind of fare but the last episode, I think 4, they fully committed to showing a black screen with the words on it saying something like “enjoy and use your imagination” with just audio. lol wow. Blue-ray purchase incentive I guess? In any regards this is a very fun show, all of the fantasy creature girls are pretty attractive and or funny with the reviewers being good joke sports. Will try to watch more.

Kyokou Suiri – This is a good show. Without getting too deep into it the best way to describe it is a girl with magical powers that can see ghosts and youkai becomes a guardian or protector of them otherworldly creatures, like a priestess. Some shit happens when she was a little girl and loses an eye and a leg but still survives. Present day she is looking fine and walks with a cane and prosthetic leg and glass eye, kinda jokes. She meets an un-usual university student and proclaims that she will become his girlfriend while she is still in high school. Some more shit happens in regards to the boi and his old girlfriend dumps him, leaving him available for our handicap girl to make her move. Fast forward a few years and they are together, kinda and doing some shit in regards to youkai and urban legend mysteries. Yea, this is kind of a mystery show and kind of romance, slice of life, drama comedy, it’s kinda weird as the tone changes sometimes but the main girl, our handicapped hero girl is really likeable, she has a great voice actor, bright optimistic personality and overall a character someone you can like, the same goes for the main boi, he’s not really a wuss, he’s a survivor i suppose and that makes a big difference, since our boi is pretty indifferent/non-nonchalant most of the time, which contrasts his legless lady friend pretty well. Solid animation, good story and premise, decent character designs, bonus points of disabled handicapped main girl character. Good shit, will watch.

ARP Backstage Pass – Another gay shit about backstage whatever I have no idea close in 1 minute, whatever living the life slice of idol gay sadboi dumb.

A3! Season Spring & Summer – Some more gay shit maybe a sequel who cares, 30 seconds in close. Idol whatever wut schooldays faggots i dunno.

Majutsushi Orphen Hagure Tabi – Remake of old 90’s manga of the same name about some sorcerer or something. There was a first gen ps2 game adaption of this series, which oddly for some reason I kinda remember being on the shelf since when ps2 launched there was literally only like 10 games available, this one being one of the first. Dated designs, shit character personalty, I have no ideawhy they decided to revive this series but whatever, sometimes dead things should remain dead and forgotten, especially since there is no successor work or sequal to this material that I know of. It’s bad, whatever.

And that wraps up this Winter Seasons round up. I normally list the shows that I intend to watch but I am lazy and way overdue anyways, at the time of this finishing this post, some shows are already at 5 or 6, holy shit, that’s like halfway thorough he season already. But in any reagrds, this season is not bad, some gems but mostly sequels or gay shit.
