Iron Man Mark LXXXV: “I Am Iron Man”

Before the world was ruined in 2020, things were looking pretty good in 2019. Yes, at the beginning of 2019 while there was indeed some considerable personal trauma due to being laid off from my previous workplace in early January, things quickly got better; I soon found another job downtown and the pay was considerably higher than what I was making at the time, I finally moved into my new condo after many years of waiting. Aside from my personal career hardships and big life changes, do you know what else happened in 2019? You guessed it, fucking Avengers Endgame was released, marking the end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe which started when the first Iron Man movie came out in 2008.

After 11 years in the making and 23 movies later, The End had finally come to the big screens and at least to me marked the end of an era, the end of a epic story that quite literally spanned over a decade to tell and with it, an entire generation of youth and fans that grew up with it either from childhood to young adulthood and well, adults to becoming; older adults for a lack of a better term. Soon after seeing the movie twice in theatres, something that we won’t get to experience the luxury of doing anytime soon, I wanted to buy something to commemorate the ending of an era but there wasn’t anything quite what I was looking for at the time.

Then in early Nov 2019, Hot Toys put out photos of a prototype and pre-order for the Iron Man Mark LXXXV collectable figure, Tony’s Starks Final suit that he wore in Avengers Endgame, the suit that he wore when he did the Last Snap that defeated Thanos once and for all and the suit in which he ultimately died in after his sacrifice; ending one of the most ambitious cinematic movie experiences of our times.

So yea, you know what I did? I fucking preordered that shit. And oh boy does it come with a heavy price tag. I had always known about Hot Toys, a company based in Hong Kong that made very realistic and premium collectable figures of popular movies and franchises, ranging from Marvel obviously but also DC, Star Wars and classic action movie heroes such as Robocop, Terminator and whatnot. I had known about their line of Iron Man figures for awhile, but was always deterred from getting one because of their high price, but this time, I had to, I just had to buy Iron Man’s Last Suit, his “Savior Suit”, the suit that he died in performing his last heroic act. I had to. So I did. Despite the cost.

After over a year later and a slight delay, “Tony Stark’s Last Suit” finally arrived to me with an accumulated price tag of over $700 Canadian dollars with shipping/duty and other bullshit charges combined. Holy shit, shipping and duty alone was about $200 dollars. COVID era tariffs and DHL only shipping are no joke.

But aside from the cost, without further ado, let’s look at this thing.

Hmm, pretty nice shipping box we got here, I am not sure sure if it was such a good idea to indicate what’s inside so visible. It’s easily a cause for concern since these are so expensive, but then again most thieves and hooligans probably wouldn’t even consider what is essentially my generation’s version of a “Turbo Man” doll from Jingle all the Way would cost by itself almost $500. Heh.

The actual box itself is beautifully designed with high quality print work and foil overlays for the text and accent silver lines. Cool, looks very premium as it should.

Side angle of the box. Hmm, very sturdy and weighted indeed. Great image.

Back of the box, filled with credits and the names of the people who crafted this thing. Gud shit. I believe all of Hot Toys products are officially licensed, so despite coming from Hong Kong, these guys are not low class bootleggers but true craftsmen making their own high quality artwork.

You slide out the contents of the box to reveal this tomb like Styrofoam container. For some reason it reminds me of carbonite or even a stone monument, maybe even a grave stone. lol.

The top cover is lifted off to reveal all the parts that are included with the figure. As you can see there are multiple hands parts, an alternate arm for Tony’s Infinity Stone Gauntlet and swappable head with Tony Stark’s face instead of the normal iron man helmet head. Cool.

Beneath the first layer of Styrofoam is another tray which includes an extra part that can be attached to the back of the Mark LXXXV, called the “Nano Lightning Refocuser” which in the movie if I remember correctly was basically extra beams and mobility for Iron man, maybe kind of like Gundam Fin Funnels I think? I can’t remember exactly as it was part of the suit so yea. Should re-watch again just to check. There also includes a stand and a pole to help the figure stay upright. Notice the small grouping of watch batteries, oh boy.

And here it is, my first test setup with swapped heads and change of arms. Looking pretty good there Tony. The detail and paintwork on his entire body and armor is outstanding. The level of detail is so high that they even matched the minor scratches and damage to what was seen in the movies. That’s nothing to say about the extremely life-like and accurate face, which from what I read, is a brand new sculpt made specifically for this figure in order to match Tony’s hair/appearance in the movie.

Here is Tony on the stand. You technically don’t need it if you position the legs right and balance properly as it can stand on it’s own but for most people I assume they don’t want to take any chances and use this thing or buy/come up with their own custom display props or custom stand. I admit that the stand is a bit unsightly because of the pole in the back but that’s ok, got to keep him safe and secure.

The level of articulation and pose ability in this thing is pretty incredible. If you didn’t know any better the photo above could have been straight from the movie with a swapped background and a few effects/touch ups. And look at dem infinity stones, looking pretty rad.

So yea, after my initial few photos I decided to put in the batteries so he could light up. Oh god putting batteries in is horrible, there is a total 6 spots within the figure that needs to have batteries placed, 2 on the leg thighs, 2 on each upper arms, 1 on the central torso and 1 for the helmet, each consisting of 3 small watch batteries stacked on top of each other.

There is no central switch to turn all the lights on, each of the 6 spots has it’s own dedicated switch so you have to basically remove parts of his armor which in itself is a bit of a pain, flip the switch, put the armor piece back on and do it for the rest of the parts and rinse and repeat to turn off. Not gonna lie, putting in the batteries and making him light up took me almost 2 hours to do.

At the end of the day however, despite the pain of getting Iron Man to power up with Arc Reactor Technology, was it worth it? Hell yea it was. Looks super cool man, to think this thing lights up is bringing it to another level.

Would I turn the lights on frequently? Probably not. One of the fears obviously is battery decay or them leaking with age but hopefully that will never happen. These are little watch batteries after all but yea, should turn him on for a little while every few months just to be sure.

Turbo Man doesn’t have shit on this, all he’s missing now is a voice audio box where if you press his chest piece or the infinity gauntlet and he’ll say “I Am Iron Man” yea.

Swap of heads with a slight change of pose with the legs and back and now he seems like he just stood up. In the movie he snapped probably on his knees but this looks fine as well.

Up close and personal. The fingers on the infinity gauntlet are also fully posable as well and you can even make him give the middle finger if you wanted to cause for jokes. Aside from the shooting ready hands, he also has fists and more relaxed hand pieces that you can swap with. I prefer this setup though, looks more actiony for his left hand.

The back is equally detailed and shit. There is so many little flaps and things that come out if you pull them a little bit which also aid in helping you pose the figure better since it exposes more joints, but overall most people won’t look at the back unless you use the nano refocuser thing.

Hmm, seems like I posed him a little bit too far leaning back…looks like he has the posture of a jojo character now. Fixed it later once I had him in my display. While I did put the nano refocuer back addon, it looks cool and all but it only does so if he has his helmet on, so I forgot to take photos of that setup and all the extra hand attachments cause I was lazy. It honestly adds a lot of bulk which if you have the space or open display area is great but I don’t really have that and I want to display him primarily him as Tony Stark, in his final moments before The Snap so I just put the nano refocuer part back in the box.

Another up close shot, shit man, this could be from the movie if you zoom in a little bit with some added shadows, lighting and effects. Incredible likeness. Fantastic attention to detail and craftsmanship.

Holy shit, once I put him in my display case under the dedicated lighting his face appearance totally changes. NOW he looks almost just like from the movies. Fucking incredible what a little special good lighting and increased shadows on a figure can do to increase it’s realism and lifelike-ness. Wow, simply mind blown. To say that this doesn’t look real would be a lie, it’s straight up looks like a screencap from the movie, minus the glass and cables in the background of course lol.

Well then, that wraps up my thoughts about Hot Toy’s Iron Man Mark LXXXV from Avengers Endgame. While it has been well over a year since Avenger Endgame aired in theaters, I think this figure is a standing physical testament to what that movie meant to me and I am sure many other fans of the Marvel movies in general. Out of all of the MCU movies my favorites is still the first Iron Man movie, Marvel was able to make at the time a B tier super hero into the main blockbuster hero of the Marvel franchise. Robert Downey Jr was casted perfectly to play Tony Stark and Iron Man in all of the movies and his legacy and career revived because of the role; he will forever be known as Tony Stark, the first Iron Man in Marvel’sĀ  superhero movies and this figure perfectly represents his famous last words in Endgame, just as he did at the end of the first Iron Man movie:

“I Am Iron Man”

$700 dollars well spent.

I have no regrets.
