I Love Gundam Seed

It can be said that the Gundam franchise as a whole is one of the most influential mecha anime series of all time and in large part probably no one would question that statement. However, once you get down to the nitty gritty of each series it becomes a bit more blurry in terms of ‘quality’ I suppose. Without doubt the original UC universe is the ‘real’ Gundam chronology and would be the most appropriate choice for most people’s favorite Gundam universe, considering it started everything after all, and probably since Char’s Counterattack is probably one of the best Gundam movies of all time. My first Gundam series like many people who grew up in the late 90’s is Gundam Wing in all it’s wonderful english dub glory with anime still fresh and new in the western youth’s mind along with DBZ and Sailormoon. However, while Gundam Wing is a great series, it is not my favorite Gundam series, as that would have to go to Gundam Seed as the title of this post would suggest.

Why you may ask? Bitch motherfucker of course it’s the best Gundam series fuck! Kira Yamato, Athrun Zala, StRiKe FrEeDoM, InFiNiTe JuStIcE, DeStIny, they are Gods. Literally Gods. The mere mention of their names implies certain things, they are their own memes, to this day, I refer to the voice actor of Athrun Zala when he appears in other anime roles as “Athrun” just because. Voice actors from Gundam seed are Godly. Beam spam and power creep in an Gundam anime unlike ever seen before. Cool opening and ending songs. Hot waifu girls like Lacus Clyne, Meer Campbell, Cagalli Yula Athha, Lunamaria Hawke that stand the test of time. Beautiful sameface designs for both boys and girls. Godlike story, even though it’s basically a rehash of UC universe in the most literal sense, fucking they have Zakus and shit in Gundam Seed, OGs one eye Green suit Boiz.

It has been said that what Gundam series you like is based on generation, for instance old people over 50+ would probably say OG UC Amuro’s Gundam is the shit while little children will say some faggot stuff like Iron Blood Orphans or Build Divers or some ghosts of the future bullshit. Gundam 00 was not really my thing and never really finished after the first cour, Axia not beam enough and trying to cater for women audiences but did it worse than Gundam Wing.

Gundam Seed is the real Millennial generation’s Gundam series and that sentiment and fact is solidified with the creation of this Freeing B-Style 1/4 Scale Lacus Clyne Bunny Figure. It’s very existence; considering it’s been like 17 years  since Gundam Seed Destiny finished running in Oct 2005 is a testament to it’s longevity, popularity and impressive nostalgia power among the anime cultural sphere. When I saw this figure up for pre-order as a limited time exclusive sale on AmiAmi, I thought a long time about it; a very a long time. I waited a few weeks before I ultimately gave in and per-ordered her and thought to myself, well I’ve never actually brought a 1/4 scale bunny figure before even though they are so popular and Freeing is literally a company that only makes 1/4 scale bunny figures, might as well justify it running with my love and nostalgia for Gundam Seed. Alright then, we good.

Her price is quite steep, costing originally ¥28,000 yen retail and after currency conversion to CAD, expensive DHL shipping costs and Canada customs duty, bringing her home cost just under $500. Fuck, that’s a lot of money for a figure.

But do you know what? That’s ok.

Why?

Because I love Gundam Seed.

Let’s take a look at Lacus in her brand new custom Bunny Figure designed by Freeing and Megahouse.

Oh my, Lacus is pretty damn big. I’ve never really understood the appeal and high cost of 1/4 scale figures but now that I have one, I see why many figure collectors end up exclusively collecting them.

The details on her face and body are fantastic, a level of craftsmanship that only is only achieved easier as the figure itself gets bigger. Excellent hair sculpt and facial expression.

The signature Gundam Seed sameface in full effect here, not that I am complaining. I love Gundam Seed after all.

I framed this shot pretty good, gets a good composition for the photo, her entire body and all that. Nice neutral background on my shoe bench truly is the best place to take pictures of figures and toys.

Slightly turned angle, they use real stocking material for the legs which is cool. I have a few bunny figures that do the same thing but for some reason when it’s a 1/4 it’s effect is much more impactful.

Directly front view, noice boobs on Lacus. No one would really display her at this angle unless you are retarded so her cleavage is never really the focus of attention, although it should be. Maybe if they ever make a Meer Cambell 1/4 Bunny figure they can make her more risque and ho-like cause that’s fitter of her character more.

Wow, Lacus has an excessively long pontytail that is deceptively heavy. I don’t think she ever wore her hair like this in the show so it’s cool that they manged to do something original for this figure, which in itself is original since she never wore a bunny suit to begin with. The hair is so long and heavy that they actually include a little plastic support beam/pillar to ensure that the weight of her hair doesn’t warp her head and balance in the long run. I didn’t display it here cause it looks ugly but ultimately I will have to use it regardless if I don’t want to cause warping.

Wow, her backside is quite revealing and nicely sculpted. Her back is outstanding as well as her butt.

More shots from her back. The material they use for the bunny tail is kinda cheap looking and slightly opaque but I guess it works, you hardly ever really see it from that angle. Her shoes and frills are very nice as well.

Another frontal view with a slightly better vertical angle position, nice framing overall and lighting on her face and the rest of her body.

Top down view of her face and chest area. Her boobs and face/hair truly are nicely sculpted indeed. Great color production as well, she more or less looks exactly show she looks from the initial prototypes. Excellent.

Her pink Haro firmly gripped in her hands. Well, not really, you kinda have to push in down a bit more or else it doesn’t really look like she’s holding it. Would be nice if it had the ability to open put it’s flaps. Pretty extra though so it’s cool.

Back to the front, she looks so great man. I have no regret in buying her.

This photo is like literally the same as the prototype photos, except with my lighting and slight color/contract brightness correction.

I shifted her in a different position to see if the lighting and different shadow alignment would change her appearance, not really but still great regardless.

Her boobs are indeed quite nice. The bunny suit’s shiny paint work is also seen quite nicely here as well. The gold trimming is fantastic. You can see the shading work done and even the outline of her rib cage a bit.

Sammmmmeeeee Faceeeeeeee. There is a bit of jaggy paint work on her gold hair accessory but nothing to get too concerned about. Her face sculpt and paint work truly is excellent. I can see why 1/4 scale may be better for paint and sculpt since it’s so much bigger and hence maybe easier to paint than 1/7 and even 1/6 scales which are the most common sizes these days for figures. There’s a slight bit of dirt on her arm that doesn’t go away but that’s OK, hardly noticeable in normal viewing.

Dat ass and real stocking material. Noice.

Dat back, so nicely sculpted and shaded well even close up on detail here.

For size comparison to how big Lacus really is, here is her with a can of Coke Zero. Motherfucker holy shit she’s pretty big.

Another size comparison with bottle of water. Even if you don’t include her bunny ears, her head is still well taller than most bottles of water.

And here is Lacus in her more or less final display location in my fancy Ikea glass cabinet. Notice the sizes of some of the other figures in the background, so big. She’s not even standing and she’s huge by comparison. I can only imagine how a big standing 1/4 scale figure would be, in which many are unless they are a loli character in which case they are shorter, still huge tho. Worth.

Well with that said, Gundam Seed is the shit. It’s the best Gundam anime for my generation, the millennial generation and those motherfuckers at Freeing and Bandai/Sunrise know exactly what they need to do to cash in on the big nostalgia Gundam Seed money and longtime fans. I am still amazed how good this looks from an anime series over 17 years old and how the character designs still don’t look that dated, at least to me, disregarding sameface factor and all that. From my understanding they are still making a Gundam Seed movie, a movie that was supposed to be made shortly after the end of Seed Destiny that would have wrapped everything up in that universe, but for a variety of reasons was on hold indefinitely due to the primary story writer/directors wife getting cancer or something and dying. Sad. I heard that they will announce something this year, but we’ll see. Hopefully they make more Gundam Seed figures not just bunny ones if they make a movie that would be great.

“I Love Gundam Seed”

$500 dollars well spent.

I have no regrets.
