Anime Review Summer Season

Summer Anime 2022

It has been quite a very eventful summer in 2022 having going to AX in La and Anime North and other shit going on like me getting a new job and just living but yea, as summer slowly comes to a close and as of this writing, in early september; Queen Elizabeth II has died. So yea, lots of shit is happening in the world for better or worse. Top Gun Maverick is a baller best movie of 2022 hands down, possibly the best movie I’ve seen since Endgame in 2019. This summer anime round up has come much much delayed due to me having to write so many posts about AX and such in depth commentary about my summer events/convention adventures but yea, that’s what happens I guess. But anyways, without further delay, let’s take a look on my thoughts on this summer’s anime as admittedly, most shows are just a couple episodes away from finishing.

Yurei Deco – Terrible show that is on crack that I have no idea what is going on. Some girl that wears a rain poncho for clothes living in the real world but there is like overlays of digital shit and stuff over people’s perception so they see like digital shit and real shit combined. Meets some fool boy who the government is after or some shit. Hijinks insue. Horrible style and art, direction and general flow. This is probably the worst show this season by far and I have no idea who this is for, what target audience. Shit show.

Hanabi-chan wa Okuregachi – A mini show about a pachinko machine that is turned into a cute girl that lives in a pachinko parlor. Dumb cute shit that is hardly worth anything. Art and girl are medicore. Pass.

RWBY – Hyousetsu Teikoku – Oh boy, after years of being a fake anime, RWBY finally has the chance to be a real anime made by a real Japanese animation studio and Japanese people. I saw this at AX, or rather, episode 4 for some reason during the RWBY panel for this anime and what I saw was alright, pretty good. It was strange that we saw episode 4 and not like you know, episode 1 at AX but whatever. With my limited knowledge and having only watched the first couple of seasons of the original 3d RWBY shit, i’d say that at least the first 2-3 episodes follow loosely the progression and plot of the original, wheas after that it does it’s own thing with an original story. The character designs are great done by black rock shooter/hololive Kiara fame, Huke, the animation is decent but definitely far from like Demon Slayers god quality. I’ll try to watch more of this, maybe even finish it because I want to know.

Luminous Witches – I wasn’t entirely sure what this show was about but after the first episode I now know: It is a Strike Witches spin-off anime taking place in the same world except instead of high flying planes and war battle, all the cute girls are idols and serve as someone of a cheer squad for everyone else that is fighting. Alright then, this is a bit different. Most of the girls in the idol/school/group are former strike witches that for some reason or another, can’t fight very well anymore, either lack of magic or some other reason so instead, they are placed to become traveling idols and perform; others, just want to live the idol life cause of course they do. Slice of life idol anime meets strike witches world with some battle, but it might who knows. Quality animation and an interesting idol anime premise. As a fan of the strike witches franchise I almost feel obligated to watch this but then again, it really depends on how I feel. I’ll probably end up watching this. Gud shit.

Musashino! – Mini show about a bunch of girls moving from the countryside into the city. There was an additional pull or gimmick to this show but I can’t remember nor was it notable. Pass shit.

Isekai Yakkyoku – Isekai pharmacist. Not exactly the most unique of ideas since it seems alot of medical and pharmacist people have been getting isekeid and getting related anime’s but this one is just alright. The main guy is some big brain pharmacist and spent most of his adult life trying to find the cure for his sister’s illness, I can’t remember of his sister died or not but the important thing of course is that he died from overwork by just lying down on his couch. He wakes up and he is a little blonde little boy to some rich noble family that just so happens to be gifted with magical power off the charts as per usual. It doesn’t get that much into the pharmacist aspect but it’s implied that’s what he ends up doing based on the introduction. Not bad but not for me, in a world with so many isekai show’s, this one is just another with a marginal twist. Pass.

Lycoris Recoil – This show is probably one of the hottest new popular shows this season and from what I understand, it is an original show, which means it could be great or terrible. The basic premise is that in this near future japan, orphan girls that have nowhere to go end up going to some kind of assassin/solider school to become Lycoris, a unit of armed public service forces of some sort that work alongside police and the army to combat crime, drug tracking and other bad things. The main blonde girl in red is a cheerful girl that is very pro but for some reason ends up being placed in some secret cafe outpost outside the main Lycoris headquarters. The second main girl, long dark hair and can only best be described as Rin from Idolmaster Cinderella girls is a uptight girl that made some mistakes during a mission and was ‘demoted’ or reassigned to the same cafe as the red girl, she hates it and wants to go back to headquarters. Combining slice of life, action, school friendship and mild drama it’s a very interesting combination hybrid of a show that is very well animated with visually attractive looking girls and art. The premise itself is pretty interesting, although not unique but it does it very well, with more emphasis on comedy, slice of life and hijinks than some other shows that tries to do something similar. Pretty good shit with good pacing and interesting world, characters and animation. Will probably watch for sure.

Soredemo Ayumu wa Yosetekuru – Glasses braid girl is head of the shogi club at school and is the only member, but one guy joins the club, a tall deep voiced boy that is only interested in getting to know the girl better and probably ultimately date her and ask her out. It is a comedy gag anime in lines to Nagatoro or Uzaki but this time both guy and girl are equally interesting and not as one sided as like Nagatoro, where the title character basically runs the show. If anything, this show has more appeal to women and girls since the dude is not bad and his a really nice sounding voice. While this is all good and all, the show it s bit slow in pacing and it seems that the gags/scenes drag on longer than they show, not very good for a comedy show if you are thinking, hay, are they done this segment yet? Not bad but not amazing either. Might watch more but unlikely.

Kami Kuzu Idol – The basic premise of this show is that a couple of gay idol boys are kinda not doing so well in the business, or rather, one of the two team boiz just doesn’t give a shit and didn’t really want to be an idol in the first place, he just wanted easy ass money because he has a nice face. On the other hand his partner is the hype man and is the fan favorite. After a shit performance he sits down at one of the concert venues and meets a ghost girl, apparently a popular idol that recently died, she is sad that she can’t live our her dreams as an idol. Conversely, the man gay boy is all like, by all means, if I could I would give this shit up, so the ghost girl takes over the boys body and all of a sudden he can be a pro idol that is hype and can sing/dance very well. So yea, that’s what happens in this comedy kinda gay show. It’s a decent concept but it’s not for me, pass.

Extreme Hearts – This show sounds pretty extreme but in reality it’s just a sports show, an extreme sports show where girls basically do sports and shit because for some reason it’s part of being a extreme idol or something. One of the main girls is a normal idol who just sings and dances and shit but is fired from her agency, she is sad but her friend recommends her trying to be an extreme idol, where you play tennis, swim, baseball, basketball, track and field, soccer and all this other shit in addition to being a normal idol that sings in dances, so she decides to give it a try. Some bullshit fast forwarding happens and a few weeks go by implying she is learning sports and physical training. The show ends with some other girls trying to help her when doing some qualifying shit and friends join in that helped her train. I have no idea what this show is for man, sports idols I guess? If you want that you can just do uma musume, and get the benefit of far better and attractive looking character, this show they all look like generic and shit. Pass, shit show.

Bucchigire! – Terrible bullshit show about some Shinsugumi New Age reformation re-imagine bullshit where all of the shinsugumi boiz are dead and the head of the crew just take criminals who were sentenced to die and gives them a choice between death or becoming Okita and shit. The premise itself is whatever but most importantly, what’s with the wacky ugly style and colorful over-simplification of character designs. Horrible ugly shit with no identity. I have no idea who this is for, kids? Women with poor tastes? young boys who think this is badass? Fail show, next.

Engage Kiss – This is a show that I have seen several times before in my career as a person who watches anime, cue some mysterious girl and her strange attachment to some boy. Some shit happens and it turns out the boy is some kind of mercenary in the not to distant future where they use the Metaverse to get calls on jobs and such to kill demons and other bad shit or whatever. Our boy is cocky and for some reason the strange yandere girl lives with him. He only wants to work to pay of his living expenses even tho he is pretty pro. More shit a happens on the job and it turns out the girl is like his partner, she’s apparently a demon/goddess of course and is super powerful. The main power is him kissing the girl or doing lewd things to girl because by Fate rules, that’s how you transfer Mana in OG Fate and by doing so, awakens her power to kill and shit. The concept has been done before and is not bad but there’s nothing here that makes me say, wow this is a good show, full of cliche and edge lord vibes, this is a pass although I think some young kids getting into anime might like this shit.

Kuro no Shoukanshi – Iseaki trash that I literally can’t remember what the spin on this shit was. All I know is that main boy killed some slime and that slime became his summon or familiar/slave and all of a sudden had a face. I guess he’s shit but he’s extreme pokemon trainer/summoner? Looks like he enslaved Rimaru. Too much of this shit. Pass and be banished from this world into another.

Hoshi no Samidare – Another trash try hard show that for some reason wants to appeal to edgy youth that have inherent sentiment of pessimism aka just are asshole bitch people. The main boy is some lazy bitch with a bad attitude that for some reason or another meets some talking lizard and shit. Lizard is all like, yo you gotta help us save the world it’s in danger, boy is all like, nah man, let it die, I don’t care. Lizard is like what the fuck boy, you know your going to die right if you don’t’ help? Boy is all like, whatever man. Then all of a sudden some random schoolgirl shows up and says up to the lizard, how’s it going, apparently she’s a magical girl from another world is is supposed to help fight the evil or whatever. Boy is like, this can’t be real and even then, doesn’t give a shit. Some bullshit happens and nothing happens. The End. This show is shit, the pacing characters and story are entirely a waste of time. Why did they make this into an anime? Should just die, just like the boy wants to.

Prima Doll – This show that can be best summed up as Violet Evergarden meets Nier Automata and Clannad/<Insert Sad Key Visual Novel Title Here>. Yes, written by the same peeps that created “The Day I Became a God” anime that had one of the most unsatisfying anime endings in recent memory with so many unfinished plot lines I am a bit cautious of watching any more Key original anime projects. The show itself is fairly interesting set in some kind of alternate post-WWI era where robot girls have transition from being war robots to being domestic friends and servants. With it, you get a variety of characters set in a backdrop of some serious post-war trauma and shit that happened in the past. The girls themselves are good looking and pretty but I dunno man. I don’t want to sink more time into a Key show and turn out so unsatisfying and ultimately resulting in nothing gained for the wider anime culture sphere. Not bad but pass, for trauma.

Shoot! Goal to the Future – Not gay soccer show but the audience will make it gay anyways so it might as well be anyways. Pass.

Shadows House S2 – Shadows house returns and with it more mystery and paranormal drama set in some house filled with shadow people and human servants which are basically slaves. How will this turn out? I have no idea but the mystery of “But Y Tho?” is the main driving factor for even watching this show, “Why” are these shadow folks even doing these things? And “What” are they doing really? Will watch for sure because I want to kno.

Made in Abyss – Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou – Oh shit after such a long time it’s finally here, S2 of Made in Abyss, after a very good and ruinous/traumatism movie which continued the story from S1, this series picks right off from the ending of the movie. With godly music, story and creative direction and story pacing, interesting world, this is a show that I can’t miss for sure, probably one of the best this season no doubt. Good shit, godly maybe even in ruin category.

Yofukashi no Uta – One of the hottest new hype show apparently from reddit and other social media which can be summed up as edgy youth anime where the main boy meets a vampire girl and they hang out at night because he wants to become a vampire and is horny. Some may call it a simp anime for the main vampire girl but I see it as a vessel for the youth of our times who feel lost and don’t care about anything anymore, which I can’t argue with to be honest. The main boy drops out of school and just wanders outside at night, that’s how he meets the vampire girl and they chill. The only way to become a vampire is if he falls in love with the vampire girl and she bites him, it has to be him to fall in love. The best thing about this show is that pretty backgrounds at night and the interesting and unique character designs, where everyone looks like they are dead tired or look exceedingly smug for no reason. Will try to watch more because I want to know what’s hot.

Chimimo – A cute chill show about some fluffy ball things that go into the human world from the demon world and become pets to a family of girls and some bigger humanoid oni guy shows up to kill them but ends up living with them and becoming friends. Chill show and style is very simple and round. It’s pretty not bad. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind watching this but there is lots of other shit around so probably not. Not bad, but nahh.

Tokyo Mew Mew New – Wow, I believe this is a remake/reboot of an old ass anime from the late 90’s early 2000’s if I can remember. The name seems familiar to me but yea, I never watched but apparently this I think also had English dubs from back in the day so yea, for some this is pretty nostalgic I think. Something about cat girls and magical girls saving the world or some shit from monsters or whatever. Seems for kids and younger girl audiences and the designs are fairly dated despite some effort to modernize their designs, can’t change too much I guess. Not bad but not for me.

Tensei Kenja no Isekai Life – Literal isekai trash, exactly the same shit as Kuro no Shoukanshi, even down to getting some slime friend that can talk. I can not tell the difference between these shows. Why they do this. Burn it.

Mamahaha no Tsurego ga Motokano datta – One of this seasons top horni anime for very imaginative dudes that have a thing for sisters, but in this case, step sister. As light novel trash origins, the name of this show is literally “My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex” which more or less sums up the show’s premise. The main boy is shit as per usual and the girl is alright, having both dated before and broke up before their parents got married and they became siblings. The entire show plays out kind of like Kaguya in that both basically kinda like each other still but are not allowed to liked each other since they are family now and they bring up the reasons why they broke up in the first place, basically a battle of tsundere with far more tsun rather than dere, like 90% to 10% ratio. The show will probably play out as expected with other girl interests in standard comedy love harem fashion and end up resulting in nothing. The character designs are attractive because they have to but there is nothing here that I haven’t seen or experienced before in other shows. Pass.

Isekai Meikyuu de Harem wo – Literal isekai trash, exactly the same shit as Tensei Kenja no Isekai Life, I have no idea what the pull or spin is anymore but it’s shit and generic either way. No amount of spin can help if your main boy has short black hair. He is supposed to get some slave or half bird maid girl or something, yea yea, boobs maid servant etc. Whatever, shit show.

Kinsou no Vermeil – Not an isekai but magic school fair where the main harry potter boy cannot summon a familiar and ends up summoning a hot demon god girl instead, weak sauce Fate x Harry Potter. There is a collection of other attractive students and girls in the school but the main boy is wussy as wussy can be. Decent animation and shit but you know how this show goes, the demon girl is not really my thing either so nah man. Pass, but I’m sure someone will like this.

Kumichou Musume to Sewagakari – The basic premise of this show is that there is a Yakuza boss and he has a little girl, he has no time to look after her so he appoints one of his underlings boys to look after her and be her guardian of sorts and protect her from other gangsters and shit. It’s essentially a combination of mild Yakuza women bait hijinks and wholesome not dad not daughter moments and interactions, all cute and all that. It’s an alright show but I don’t think much will happen other than more Yakuza stuff and less interactions with the little girl which is kind of the point of this show. Not bad but we’ll see, might watch more but probably not unless people say this is really good.

Warau Arsnotoria Sun! – The designs for this show are pretty interesting and from my understanding this is based off of some game, not sure if mobile game or traditional game but either way this show is really weird, like 95% of the show is like k-on magic school chilling at the clubhouse drinking tea and eating cookies, doing cute boring chill things; then that 5% it hits you with some hardcore drama action battle shit from the perspective of some war or villains dudes and is super serious and the art style and tone completely change, it’s like all of a sudden you are watching pokemon and in a flashback all of a sudden it looks and feels like Fist of the North Star Kenshiro shit. Like lol what? I have no idea if this plays out to make any sense or if they are two completely unrelated stories but yea, the pacing is just too slow and boring and the jokes, or rather lack of them just make this show very dry despite the girl characters being pretty colorful and such. Pass, I don’t see this media franchise being successful or adding to future anime culture.

Teppen – This is an interesting show about a bunch of girls who are enrolled into a comedy trope school and they kind of form groups based on regions of japan like Osaka, hokkadio and or other theme. This is in essence a stand up comedy show with a school girl slice of life twist which is interesting to say the least. The first episode kinda rolls like them visualizing their stand up comedy routine but except that it’s real, not sure if it happened or not but it’s cool. The girls are all cute and or interesting and the concept itself is quite unique. Due to the assassination of Shinzo Abe, episode 2 was skipped over for unknown reasons and the show continued on into episode 3 since apparently episode 2 had something about assassination or whatever which is like ok sure. As of this writing they are finally going to air episode 2 after doing up to episode 10. Most people refused to continue watching the show since there was no episode 2 aired so I think this might have killed whatever potential this show might have had. Might watch episode 2 but outside of that probably not unless it’s really good.

Shine Post – This is a standard idol anime but the girls are pretty good looking and the animation pretty good, that’s usually good enough for most but this show has a bit of an extra spin in that the 3 main girls are already idols and are in shit because they are not doing well. Their group might be disbanded by management unless they are more successful so they reach out to a very successful producer, but he doesn’t want to be a producer anymore because he is too good at his job and he ruins his peers lives by being so far superior as a producer that everyone hates him. He has a special ability and can see if girls can “Shine” which indicate their ability as an idol and it has served him well. After some convincing, he agrees as he interviews each of the three girls, 2 out of the 3 girls shine. He was skeptical until the last girl, she didn’t shine at all, but then decided to get on board. Contrary to what you might think, “Shine” is not a good attribute, it means that they are lying or not being honest with their true goals of becoming an idol, meaning the 2 of the 3 girls are not really being truthful to why they want to be idols, only the one was pure since she didn’t shine. That was a very nice twist since you would think that shiny means good but for idol shit, at least in this show, it’s bad. Interesting. Might watch more but we’ll see.

Kanojo, Okarishimasu S2 – The return of top waifu anime rent a girlfriend is back and it pretty much picks up from the end of the first season. This show as good girls and one bad bitch, Mami. The boy is infuriating and a god level wuss and simp boy for the main girl, which is so good that he completely does not deserve to be with her at all. I’ll probably end up watching this cause I want to know why Mami is such a bitch and how could the author possibly write her to be an attractive harem girl, that is what I am hoping for at least, to see that. Will probably watch more.

Hataraku Maou-sama S2 – After almost a decade or so or more, The devil is a part timer returns with a S2. Damn son, so this is what happens when you make an anime to sell the light novel/manga and return after almost 10 years later to have a S2? Pretty bad yo, which sadly I feel is the same fate for No Game No Life, the hugely popular anime series that still gets anime figures of it’s characters made and yet, nothing on a S2 for many years, just a movie prequel of sorts that happened a few years ago. Either way, this show once again picks up where it left off with the huge problem being that I can barely remember some of the more minor characters and their names. It’s a problem when you have sequel so far away from the original which is unavoidable but this show assume you just watched that shit yesterday. It would have been nice to have a character re-introduction and recap but no, which is unfortunate. The main thing this S2 throws at you out of the gates is some baby girl that allegedly, is Maou’s and the Yuusha girls daughter which doesn’t really make any sense and is largely the main focus for this show it seems. The character designs are considerably uglier and simplified from what I can remember so yea, that’s not good signs. I am not sure if I will continue watching this but I’ll certainly try, it’s been almost ten years after all.

Saikin Yatotta Maid ga Ayashii – The basic premise of this show is that we have a boy who is alone in a mansion and for some reason or another, has no more family because they all died or whatever and also no more money for servants and maids/butlers. Because of his lack of funds to pay them, he ends up having to let go all of them. After a few days/weeks of living alone he is greeted by a maid he’s never seen before, a beautiful dark skinned, dark purple haired girl that wants to be his maid, even though he can’t pay her anything cause apparently she has no where else to go and will work for free as long as he provides room and board for her. He agrees but can’t shake off that she has ulterior motives and calls her very suspicious, hence the name of this show which is like “My new maid is very suspicious” or something like that. The show itself flows like a a 4-koma gag show and it feels like it with comedy bits and repeat gags like the boy getting flustered at the maid’s beauty and etc. The author of this is apparently the same guy that made Jahy-Sama, so it seems like he has a thing for dark skin and purple hair and from what I read Jahy and his other characters from that show make cameo appearance in this show as well, which is a nice touch. Not bad but probably will not watch more until I feel like watching dark skin and purple hair girl/maid.

Totsukuni no Shoujo – This is apparently a movie but split into 3 parts because I have no idea and I guess they want to stretch it to make more money. The story is about some little girl who is picked up in the forest by some demon looking goat head man thing and they live for a bit and such since it seems that people want her dead or something. Very unique and creative style with crazy lines and animation flow. Will probably finish this, either all 3 parts or just watch the movie. Pretty good.

A Herbivorous Dragon of 5000 Years Gets Unfairly Villainized –  Chink made anime with only Chinese audio voices. Everything about this show would have been decent had it not been for the Chinese voice acting which sounds grating and ugly. The show’s premise is about some dragon that is super passive and doesn’t want to fight or do shit but is actually wussy. Some girl that was supposed to be his sacrifice ends up being his friend or some shit because she thinks he can train her and is powerful, when in fact he is a shit dragon. The girl is pro for some reason and upholds all the common beliefs like if you don’t eat meat you are weak and you have to serve your country or some shit for honor whatever. Yea, such a shame. I had originally thought that this was a pure Chink anime but I looked it up and it’s actually a Japanese Light Novel, lol what the fuck? For some reason Bilibi brought the rights to to this and had a Chinese studio make it, with only Chinese audio on initial release which I can only imagine is due to CCP appeasement and trying to not go to jail and make an attempt in passing this off as a home grown Chinese anime but it’s not, frauds. A Japanese proper dub will be released sometime in Jan 2023 from what I read, so like yea, best to ignore this shit and maybe come back in Jan when they release the Japanese version. So strange that the only Chinese anime that seems decent, actually is because it’s japanese source material, figures lol.

Isekai Ojisan – This is a excellent show, probably one of the most fun this season filled with jokes and top tier pacing/characters/girls. The basic premise is basically what happens at the end of an iseaki, when the person returns back from the other world or some shit. The main character is an ojisan, old guy uncle that had just wakes up from a 17 year coma after being hit by a car. Turns out in the past 17 years he’s been living an isekai life filled with dragons, elfs and magic shit typical fare. Due to various circumstances, he ends up having to live with his nephew since his family kind of fell apart during those 17 years. His nephew of course doesn’t believe it at first but quickly turns around after his his uncle shows him that he retains all the magic and skills that he gained in the other world. Throughout the show he and his uncle just sit around in their apartment table and he shows him snippets and stories of his adv endures, how he was so ugly that people thought he was an orc variant cause apparently everyone in the other world is beautiful and uncle is rather plain/ugly looking, even when he was younger. The main source of comedy and jokes however comes from that fact that his uncle is a hardcore Sega game fan and uses it as a means to explain his adventures and his lack of social and romantic awareness to all the pretty elf, demon, magical fantasy girls that he just so encounters and causes misunderstandings due to his thick scull. Add to the fact that our ojisan uncle is voiced by no other than Takehito Koyasu, godly voice actor of Dio Brando, Initial D Ryusuke, Excalibur, Gundam Seed MuLaFraga and countless other god tier clown/king badass roles and you have a formula for basically instant sucesss. The newphew himself is by no means a slacker either being the voice actor of Kazuma, the main boy of the Konosuba franchise and you just add further to comedic effect. The girls are pretty cute, attractive and funny; namely the Tsundere Elf, Mabel the ice girl and even the nephew’s childhood friend; all good funny girls and suitable waifu material. Great show, interesting animation style, concept and storytelling, great characters and godly voice acting. Probably one of the best shows this season.

Mobile Suit Gundam The Witch From Mercury S00E01 Prologue – Oh boy, looks like we got a early preview of the new gundam show in some sort of Prologue episode before the actual show begins. Without spoiling anything, the episode does a great job at explaining the world and the current political/world setting and sets it up for a time jump for the future for the main character, the first main female hero in Gundam. Looking forward to it when the show actually airs in the fall. Good shit.

And there we have it, Summer Anime 2022 is overall pretty decent, alot of sequels that I didn’t cover I know are happening that I don’t watch but that’s ok, nothing all too horrible except for a few gay dumb shit. Will watch for sure Made in Abyss – Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou, Isekai Ojisan, Shadows House S2, Lycoris Recoil, Luminous Witches and I’ll make my best effort to watch Hataraku Maou-sama S2, Yofukashi no Uta, and RWBY – Hyousetsu Teikoku, maybe a few more if I feel like it. Summer is ok but I know that Fall is going to be a packed season filled with many high profile sequels and hype shows airing such as Chainsaw Man so yea, in a few more weeks, Fall is already here, shit. Who knows how long it will take me to write reviews for Fall? We’ll see.
