Anime Review Fall Season

Fall Anime 2023

I write my overall impressions of this Fall anime season 2023 just as shows are about to finish, noice; better late than ever I guess. Being busy with other things like AnimeNYC and chirstmas shopping and GGStrive playing, I finally decided to get this shit done. I’ve been doing this for so long, might as well continue I guess; I mean, i’m going to write my top anime ranking too and yearly recap throughts soon so might aswell get my hands ready for typing shit. Though about passing this through chatGPT, but fuck it, i’m human, let’s keep my writing shit.

Ragna Crimson – Some edgelord boy with white hair is some hidden power boy and in this world demons lizard vampires are at war with the world. Some shit happens and his future self, many decades in the future calls to him as he has become super powerful but is sad because he was unable to save the people he cared for when he was young, so as the future self of the boy dies, he does some magic shit to self-isekai his knowledge into his young past self. This happens and now our white hair boy how has like ice and fire powers or something and owns the demon vampires. Yea, nice concept but pretty cringe, maybe if he was a cute girl it would be better. Pass shit.

Overtake! – Not F1 racing anime that is about like F5 or some shit, like super amateur F1 racing where anyone can enter and poor people with no money can race for fun and do dumb shit. If you like F1 this is the anime for you. It follows some photographer who is only there for press but ends up getting involved with the sport and ends up joining a team and such. Enjoy standard sport racing tropes.

MF Ghost – Oh yea boi, this is the shit. After a number of years brewing, the soft sequel to Initial D gets an anime. While it’s not the same as initial D, it has cars racing except this time in a near future where drones follow the cars and broadcast the race. The basic premise is simple, a racing prodigy from England goes to Japan in search of his estranged father, as he is half Japanese. He hopes that by ranking highly in races he will gain the attention of his Father and will try to connect with him. As it is set in the same world of initial D, except lots of cameos and tie ins. Most importantly however is EUROBEAT is back on the menu boiz lolol. Gud shit watch for sure.

Megumi no Daigo – Kyuukoku no Orange – Aka Firefighter Daigo, this is the anime that I saw at Anime Toronto in early September. Not bad, but you know, one of those shows that is a new adaptation of an old manga and totally not gay but people make it gay because of course lol. Pass.

Sousou no Frieren – Frieren is probably the best new show this season and the premise is simple. The demon lord has been defeated after a 10 year long quest and the yuusha party has won, but what happens years after as time passes and everyone enjoys relative peace? 50 years pass by and the party’s magic caster, Frieren ends up reuniting with her old party one last time for a reunion. As an elf, their lifespan is much longer than a human and hasn’t aged a day while the rest are elderly and nearing their death. Frieren realizes that what seemed like a meager 50 years to her is an entire lifetime to a human as he begins to regret not trying to know her party members better or making better use of her time given a human’s short lifespan. After some shit happens, and with new young traveling companions, she decides to go on a journey back to the demon lord’s castle for nostalgia’s sake. This show starts a little bit slow but the pacing is on point. The characters are great, especially Frieren as the stoic but somewhat playful elf caster. A combination of adventure, slice of life, comedy, drama, journeying, action and sentimental narratives power this story and it’s pretty good shit. While the character designs are honestly pretty generic and plain, the animation quality makes up for it and it’s overall presentation and execution is very well done. Great opening song by YOASOBI aswell. The hottest shit this season, watch if you haven’t already.

S-Rank Musume – The premise of this show is that a father was once an adventurer but had to retire early due to an injury but ended up finding an abandoned baby in the forest where he lives and ended up raising her as his daughter. Many years past the the daughter grows up and dreams of being a adventurer like her dad and ends up becoming a S-Rank class hero, one of the highest there is. The early premise is her trying to get back home to her dad after being away for like 10years or so but work always get in the way while the dad just does former hero dad stuff in his local village. The show changes a bit as she does go home and more stuff happen but overall this show is filled with comedy, wholesomeness and mild action, slice of life fare. I’ll try watching more but we’ll see. Good but not a must watch.

Dekoboko Majo no Oyako Jijou – This show is very similar to S-Rank Musume except instead of being a warrior, a witch girl finds an abandoned human baby girl in the forest and raises her, being a witch or elf of some sort, they don’t age that fast and over the short span of 16 years, her baby girl has become a very tall big boobed dark-skinned mature looking women, so much so that you would think that the roles are reversed. The core of this show is comedy in this disparity between mother and daughter and the slice of life hijinks and such, with mild fan service with jokes of similar nature. While ok, it’s really slow and not that funny to me, the character designs are not that great either imo. Not bad but pass from me.

Ojou to Banken-kun – Daughter of Yakuza heir dies and ends up living with grandpa to be raised, the Yakuza big boss. Under these circumstances granpa assigns her a bodyguard to look after her over the years. Over the past 8-10 years pass and the girl ends up going to a normal highschool but is shocked to find that her bodyguard has also enrolled into her class posing as a student, which nobody suspects, even tho the guy is like 25-28 years old by now. The daughter likes/loves bodyguard guy so it’s kind of a weird show in that relationship dynamic and not sure if the guy likes her aswell or if he is just doing his job. Yea, this is a show for girls but yea, not my thing.

The iDOLM@STER Million Live! – 3d idolmaster show that no one cares about because it’s no the original Idolmaster girls or Cinderella girls, the only ones that people care about because they are the best. Pass.

Kibou no Chikara – Otona Precure ’23 – A very interesting show. It’s basically a sequel to an old magical girl pretty cure anime series from like 10-13 years ago except all the girls in that show have now grown up and are adults working in the regular world as office workers and etc with careers, no longer magical girls. Wow. While the show itself is more like a reunion show, for some reason the crew is called to action again and they have to become magical girls so they regain their old powers with the ability to transform…and they transforms to their magical girl forms from 10 years ago lol. Wow. Yea, interesting concept but not for me. I’m sure this is for fans of the original show, guess it was really popular this pretty cure.

Hikikomari Kyuuketsuki no Monmon – The basic premise of this show is that in a vampire kingdom world, the main girl is a princess of a vampire/demon kingdom but she is a shut in hikkomori and also born with no demonic powers or abilities, which is super rare, basically a muggle in Harry potter world. Through circumstances and misunderstanding she ends up having to become a commander of one of the military guards and lead a war but is totally incapable of doing so since demons/vampires only gain respect through power and ability, which she has none of. Aided by her maid and a number of others, she puts on a show and gloats to her troops how power she when it’s all a lie but it humorously works. That is the basis for this show, comedy and jokes at the vampire girl and the possible fact that all the troops know already know of her inability but because she’s really cute they do it for her. lol At least that’s how I take it. This show has all the workings to be a success but it isn’t enough for me; while the girl is cute enough, it’s not funny to me and the designs are just average at best. Pass.

Bokura no Ameiro Protocol – An original anime about some guy who used to be a almost-pro Apex/Valorant fps gamer but stopped because his parents died and had to look after his little sister. Some years pass and ends up working at a gaming cafe but is reluctant to get involved in the local esports team that visits the cafe even though he was so good like 5 years ago. After some shit and money, he ends up joining the team and begins to connect with all the people he left in limbo like 5 years ago online just before he stopped, for instance some anon player that he used to play with which in the anime shows over the past 5 years ended becoming a super popular idol that plays for fun but has hidden pro level skills etc. The show feels like an original anime due to it’s slow and uneven pacing and flow and while the concept is interesting, it’s not my thing, i’m sure this would appeal to some tho. Pass.

Potion-danomi de Ikinobimasu – The name of this show is ” I Shall Survive Using Potions!” which is pretty clear isekai bait. And as the name implies, the main girl dies and her only power is the ability to make potions in the new world, which while mundane to her, is actually godlike in her fantasy world where the magic and power level is very very low, it’s almost like a regular human world. The potions she create are stronger than any magic that has ever existed in that world and she goes on her way and such. Yawn, more trash. Pass.

Buta no Liver wa Kanetsu Shiro – Isekai trash except the main boy is reincarnated as a pig and ends up becoming the pet/servant of a cute girl in fantasy world. Trash shit. Only thing notable about this show is that the original source material is illustrated by the same artist that designed Fauna from Hololive EN. Other than that, trash.

Atarashii Joushi wa Do Tennen – Gay bait about a new office worker and he meets his boss which is cool but he’s very short and goofy, despite his initial outward cool and competent appearance. Not for me but I can see some girls liking this, maybe. Pass.

Hametsu no Oukoku – The name of this show roughly translates to “The Kingdom of Ruin” which I like and is on brand for me but it’s kinda whatever. In a world where witches and magic once dominated humans over centuries, technology and science has caught up and has made magic and witches/wizards obsolete. No longer wanting to be tied to the ways of old, the emperor hunts down and kills witches and magic users. The show focuses on some boy who’s one of the last magic users where he witnesses his beloved master being publicity humiliated and killed/beheaded in front of him with him vowing to avenger her. Hence time skip and yea shit happens. Overall this is not for me, too serious and too basic of a premise. Revenge? Really? Didn’t sell it to me. Pass.

Goblin Slayer S2 – Good shit. After the goblin slayer movie we continue with a new set of adventures with everyone’s favorite goblin killing boi goblin slayer. As I thoroughly enjoyed the first season and the movie, there’s no reason why I will stop watching this one. Watch for sure.

Kouryaku Wanted – Isekai Sukuimasu – Trash Chinese 3d anime probably bootlegged from something else. Pass.

Toaru Ossan no VRMMO Katsudouki – MMO online game trash anime fake isekai where some game veteran likes to play trash games and loves kusogame shit tier broken games. He’s recommend to play a good VR game for once and goes at it doing dumb shit like maxing luck or playing with no clothes or whatever because it’s for the memes or something. Trash ugly trash dumb shit.

16bit Sensation – Another Layer – Girl is very sad that the state of visual novels and galge are shit in modern times. Working at a erogame company, she is sad that her company only goes for the quick easy bait shit, focusing on ero and porn aspect of the game and completely ignoring the characters/story/gameplay etc as the ceo considers them secondary. One day walking pass an old game shop she sees classic visual novels like Clannad, Air, Comic Party, ToHeart and other once popular titles in the bargain bin for like 100 or 200 yen and is shocked. She speaks to the shopkeeper and explains that these titles shouldn’t be in the bargain bin as they are master works, the shopper, an old woman humors her and enjoys her enthusiasm “Oh really, are they really that good?”. Some shit happens and the next day the main girl tries to go visit the store but it appears to have vanished overnight, more shit happens and it looks like she is transported to 1992, 30 years ago to “The golden age of bishoujo games!”. Thus setting the stage for the premise of the show of her living her life in 1992 and joining a galge company to make their new game using old computers and shit, exploring how it was during the time and the people involved making these games in their early pioneer days. Nice premise, might watch but probably not. Everything about this show seems interesting but yea, nostalgia can only take you so far maybe.

KamiErabi GOD.app – 3d trash skimmed less than 30 seconds. Garbage.

Kusuriya no Hitorigoto – The show takes place in “not-ancient China” but totally ancient China setting and roughly translates to “The Apothecary Diaries” and follows the story of some girl and her fixing shit and helping people in the royal court or something. It’s basically a pharmacy show with some comedy, drama and slice of life. While people say this show is really good and is highly rated, the setting and premise doesn’t really appeal to me at all so I skimmed this shit the moment I saw names like Xiaolan or Jiaojiao. Yea, despite being Japanese authored, pass.

Migi to Dali – Some weird show about a couple of blonde haired blue eyed twin orphans try to conceal the fact to their adoptive parents that they are one person, not twins and live their lives because I have no idea? Maybe they wouldn’t want twins I guess? They go through so much shit just to coneal it’s so dumb. Pass. For women mainly.

Undead Unluck – A show that is from netflix that was heavily promoted during AnimeNYC when I went by cruncyroll, trying for it to be the next big thing. The premise is that in a world full of weirdos with powers, the main girl has ungodly bad luck, bad luck to anyone who gets near to her or touches her, usually resulting in death and a weird man that cannot die, even if he is just a head and his body is destroyed, he will revive and regenerate. When a girl who wants to die meets a man wants to die but can’t? Well, hijinks ensues and they end up becoming a pair or something to join a special crime fighting org or something. I watched a couple of episodes and had enough. While not bad, it’s not that special, i’ve seen this kind of show before and the art style reminds me of My Hero Academia. Not bad, but pass.

Dr. Stone S3 – Wow, so we are still going on with Dr. Stone? I thought it was over earlier this year but apparently the S3 consists of 2-cours, so yea, good shit, more to come. Things are good and I hope the show wraps up within the next couple of years or so. Good shit.

Watashi no Oshi wa Akuyaku Reijou – Some girl gets transported/dies and lives in her visual novel and loves the villianess, so much so that she wants to do everything that she can to protect her from her ill fate. Super gay which is good for them but yea not for me, pass.

SHY – Heroes in the modern world where each country has their own heroes but Japan’s hero is pretty young, just a high school girl and is kinda weak. The first episode has the main girl being a black haired shy glasses girl but transforms into a white haired, SHY hero girl, well not much different in personality and gets trauma over the fact that she failed to save a girl when a roller coaster fucked up or something. While the girl doesn’t’ die she later ends up joining the main girls class and it gets super awkward for the hero girl and more shit happens which involve the victim getting turned into a monster/demon and SHY, the hero saving her and becoming her friend and gaining knowledge of her identity. While this show seems good and I like the main girl, I think there is too much hero shit lately, so probably not watch more. Not bad.

Seiken Gakuin no Makentsukai – “Awakening from magical stasis after a thousand years, the Dark Lord Leonis suddenly finds himself in the body of a ten-year-old boy! ” trash trash trash. Not anosvoligold. Pass.

Kamonohashi Ron no Kindan Suiri – Gay detective bait show where the straight man detective goes asks for help for the troublesome not detective because he is not police or detective like. He is more like a murderer because once he solves the crime and finds the criminal he wants to kill them instead of arresting them, which makes him unfit to be police or a detective, even though he is a brilliant genius detective. Yea, not bad but gay bait. Pass.

Hoshikuzu Telepath – They look very pretty and shiny but this show is about some girl who says she is an alien coming to class and a girl who always wanted to make friends with an alien. This is a very yuri gay women bait show and it probably does it very well. Nice character designs but pretty slow pacing and kinda weird tone. Pass.

Boushoku no Berserk – “Fate Graphite is one of the forsaken. Cursed with the skill “Gluttony,” he is ever starving, never sated… until the day he kills a dying thief and devours the man’s strength—and his soul. The true hunger of Fate’s Gluttony has awakened, and if he can learn to control his power, he will at last be the master of his own destiny.” LOL.

Kimi no Koto ga Daidaidaidaidaisuki na 100-nin no Kanojo – Girl makes a magic wish or something and by mistakes ends up having the power to have 100 girlfriends over the course of his school life or something. While a somewhat standard harem fare of dumb comedy hijinks, I am disappointing by the fact that the intro only shows like 5 or 6 girls? Where is the other 94 girls yo? The character designs are not bad tho and from what I seen in the the first episdoe, the girls are pretty good. But too many harem shit, pass.

Shangri-La Frontier – MMO online game trash anime fake isekai where some game veteran likes to play trash games and loves kusogame shit tier broken games. He’s recommend to play a good VR game for once and goes at it doing dumb shit like maxing luck or playing with no clothes or whatever because it’s for the memes or something. Trash ugly trash dumb shit. This is the exact same description as Toaru Ossan no VRMMO Katsudouk because honestly, I can’t remember which one this was.

Kikansha no Mahou wa Tokubetsu desu – “The world is on the brink of destruction after a devastating ten-year war in the “shadow labyrinth.” Desir Arman is one of the last skilled magicians left standing, but even he is no match for the formidable foe threatening humanity’s very existence.” LOL forgettable.

Tearmoon Teikoku Monogatari – Another one of those shows of self-isekai into yourself once you die into your younger self in the past, which kinda counts as time travel stein’s gate like I guess. The main girl is a princess and she is a bitch as she is to be executed in the present day as the monarchy is overthrown by the people. Just before she is beheaded she wishes she could do it all over again. When she dies she wakes up as herself as a little girl with all the knowledge of events up to her death. She vows to now repeat her mistakes and learns to grow up being kind and nice to her servants and trying her best to prevent her future fate and helping the kingdom from ruin. This show is pretty and shiny, they look really good but honestly, it’s too generic in a sea of similar shows. Not bad but pass.

Ikenaikyo – “Allen, a misanthropic wizard, lives deep within the forest. He is known as the “Demon Lord” and feared by those around him… he comes across a young girl named Charlotte who has collapsed in the forest…After hearing the story of the 17-year-old’s exploitation, Allen decides, “I’ll let her live in my mansion, and I’ll teach her all sorts of bad things…” As generic as they come I suppose but it’s kind of comedy so ya, still completely forgettable however. Pass.

Yuzuki-san Chi no Yonkyoudai – Show about a bunch of brothers living together ranging from young adult, teenager, middle schooler and elementary kid because their parents died. The biggest brother is the teacher of the middle schooler brother I think. Supposed to be wholesome slice of life comedy I think but people will make this gay as tradition.

And I think that about accounts for most of this season I think minus possible netflix shit. Overall alot of shit this season, mostly shit trash but a few good shows that I have been actively following such as Frieren, MF Ghost and a variety of sequels that I follow such as Dr. Stone and Goblin Slayer. With the exception of a few gems like Frieren, not a whole lot this season that moves the needle in general anime cultural sphere. We’ll see if winter has more good shit.
