So then, it’s just a travel day back home from Boston but there is still some interesting to things to see here and some merch overview and my thoughts on this mini trip and the Yoasobi concert in general and Boston. Considering that I am writing this, guess I am not dead, so that’s good. Let’s see how things went today.
With left our hotel at around 7:30am-ish and got to the Logan airport at roughly past 8:00am. Our flight is supposed to be at 11:20am but let’s so how that goes. The Boston Logan airport is quite big with three large different terminals serving different regions and such. We are in Terminal E which is supposed to be for international travel, which also includes Canada.
After a quick check in at the porter desk we got our boarding pass. They use pretty nice paper indeed. It’s interesting to note that they only write the boarding time, not the the actual scheduled flight time, hmm.
A momentary stop to readjust merch and carry-on luggage. When we came we were carrying one personal item bag each, on our way back we now have each a separate carry along with our personal item on because our Porter ticket allows it, that and we also have merch now so yea.
Line up for security checkpoint and initial screening of passport and shit. Kind of long and they do this thing where you just take a photo of your face and that’s like good enough for the airport to verify your identity and trip, granted you checked in from your airline prior, cool.
They have a few of these self serve amazon fully automated stores where you just enter with your credit card, take your shit and leave and in theory the sensors within the store will charge you automatically once you exit. Cool, not sure about this system outside of a closed place like an airport tho but cool nonetheless.
Legal Sea Food is one of of Bostons main chains for seafood of all sorts, it’s kind of their thing. Like, if your afraid to try some unknown mom and pop or fancy seafood restaurant to get your lobsta roll and chowda, this is the main generic and base way to get it. We didn’t get any however because they only had breakfast menu at this time and the items were limited, very little seafood this early so yea, skip.
Near our gate they had a few food places to eat at, for instance this Italian sandwich place that also serves pizza.
Some Chinese fast food place which I forgot was called, probably bao something. The workers I think was one black guy and a Mexican women. Heh.
They also had a Wahlburgers too, which is kind of jokes since we made effort to go there yesterday near fen-way part. In retrospect, I don’t regret going to it yesterday as this location seemed dead and there was no business, I mean who eats burgers in the morning?
I had a stroll to another terminal, which is actually quite a distance; to find a Starbucks, cause I am still looking out for those BeenThere Mugs which are apparently now discontinued. Looks like today is a fail, they only have the new Discovery series mugs which I think look like shit. Guess it’s end of the line for me in collecting Starbucks mugs lol, it was a good 2 years or so doing it, not bad, too bad.
Me and Dan ultimately ordered from the first Italian place and both got pizza cause why not, pizza is just bread with tomato sauce and cheese, kinda breakfast like right? Nice interesting baby box.
We each got our own Margarita pizza, it roughly costs I think $18 which is kind of expensive but then again, what do you expect from an airport? It was alright, could have done with more cheese and more sauce spread out to the edges but it would do, better than Pizza Pizza that’s for sure.
After a slight delay in our flight and boarding we got onto a similarly small place that is not a jet plane from Porter. It was a a pretty packed flight. Why is it that almost all flights that I go on are packed? I would one day like to go on a flight where at least it’s like half full, but nope, never seen that shit in my life. I think they just cancel flights straight up if they are not at least like 70% full or something.
As before, they have interesting snack selection like the chips before, this time I chose some cheese fava beans. Not my thing really, would have preferred just salt but whatever.
After a pretty quick flight of roughly an hour and a half like before we landed safely and were back at Billy Bishop airport for their customs and such. Due to the small size of the airport, we didn’t really have to walk very far to get to this point, better than Pearson in that regard.
In no time we were finished and had to get back to the mainland, instead of the ferry we tried out the underwater pathway. It is pretty efficient with walkways and shit, it’s far simpler than taking the ferry so yea, that’s cool.
After we got outside we took an expensive taxi cab ride back to my condo and got back into my car to grab a final last bite to eat before dropping Dan back at home. We decided to go to Wood side square to try Magic Noodle because it’s been there for some time now and we both haven’t tried it, so might as well. Let’s see the magic.
The time is now something past 3pm and I’m surprised there are a few people still around eating wow.
I choose a noodle soup called triple beef or something that has like beef broth, slice beef and beef brisket. The noodles were standard and had nice chew, freshly made apparently. The broth was pretty mid, it’s just clear beef broth with minimal richness or umami, you kind of have to put chili old into it that they provide on the table to improve it considerably. Not bad considering this is like $13 or so, not bad, but not amazing.
Dan got the signature “The Magic” noodle soup which has a whole bunch of shit in it like tripe, fried chicken, sliced beef/some other meat and a fried egg (not pictured here because they brought it separately in another dish). He said that it was alright but kind of bland and plain, at least the broth, and coming from Dan, him saying something is too plain, means that it really is plain. I think it’s actually the same beef broth but maybe because he didn’t add chili oil into it, it’s even more plain, who knows. In terms of value it’s like $14 or so so the value is quite good, especially with the fried egg and fried chicken. Not bad value.
Overall Magic Noodle is alright, but they have alot of shit on the menu and variations and types, so they are not specialists in any kind of noodle soup, they also have fried noodles too and side dishes like fried chicken and even bbq skewers. I’m not so sure if there is enough “Magic” in their noodles to justify their name but I suppose it’s jokes enough and easy to remember considering it is a chain after all; good introduction to Chinese style noodle soups, which ironically I don’t think is that good of an introduction at all cause they have too much items on the menu that are not noodles.
After dropping Dan back home I went back to my condo and had a shower to wash away the filth of air travel and slowly unpacked my merch and things. Among other things, above is all the stuff I got from the Yoasobi concert, black tshirt embroidered, blanket and their two albums weirdly named “The Book II” and “The Book III” which is kinda eh. There is actually a “The Book I” but they don’t have it for sale, probably because it’s long out of print and before they got popular/famous, too bad. They should do a reprint. Also one of those fan fans, cause why not.
In terms of cover and graphic design, it is minimal to the max, and honestly super plain. For albums, I wonder why they need to be so thick like binders, I should open them up later and see what’s inside. Book III has all the good shit, or rather all the songs that made them popular such as Idol and Yuusha etc, I have no idea what is one Book I.
I enjoyed my short dining experience at the Union Oyster House, I even enjoyed their gift shop. Some people may look down on restaurants that have gift shops but I don’t mind, I like this shit lol. I mean as the oldest restaurant in the US, why not, got some nice hat, mug and shirt, jokes and looks pretty good in my opinion.
We walked into Trader Joes and I picked up some fancy spices, as per recommendation from Dan’s online friends from Discord saying the far most right spice mix is good for popcorn although it’s meant for roasted corn on the cob Mexican corn. Took some base ass crackers for fun and for some reason our hotel had a black rubber duck in our bathroom in plastic, as if it was meant for us as a gift? Took that shit anyways.
A collection of fridge magnets from MFA Boston of their most famous/popular works, most of these I have mentioned yesterday except the top left ones and top right. The top left ones are like 1930’s Japanese print shit; they actually have another section in the museum that is dedicated towards old Japanese print graphic design like this and post-war art from the 1950’s too, which I suppose is another big attraction for Japanese guests. Top right is a painting by American John Singer which I have seen in textbooks before and to left of that is another Van Gogh. Gotta get those nice magnets for my fridge to match my MoMa ones right?
My haul of wonderful bait ass trinkets from Boston and the Freedom Trail, hell yea boi. Of course they had one of those medallion machines, gotta get that shit. Most interesting is probably the pocket watch fro the USS Constitution, noice wonderful trinkets, it works too, nice clock lol.
Proof of existence, travel home alive edition, noice trip.
With that said, that about sums up this little trip to Boston and the merch I got, not a whole lot compared to Vegas, which is understandable since I was only here for like 2 full days and here for a concert.
Overall I would say that Boston is really nice city, it has a lot of history, food and diverse people living in it; throughout our short stay I can say that this city is very diverse; all kinds of people, black, white, Asian, Hispanics, Browns and everything else in-between or more specified like Italian, Irish, British, French, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Mexicans, Indians etc. It actually feels like a real multicultural city since no group is particularly more than any other at least from initial feel, very balanced. They have no shortage of good public transportation with a well connected subway and lots of roads and tunnels but the traffic can get bad tho.
They have many different types of food because of the people living in this city and the city streets are very safe and lively wherever you go, you see people walking about and just doing their thing. As a city with a large amount of students from the many universities within Boston, there is always young people walking around and doing things, you always see people jogging around, playing basketball and baseball. It also makes sense that Yoasobi choose this place as their last US tour location, probably because they have a large student population that likes anime/jpop and a decently sized native Japanese population, much larger than Toronto. The lead singer of Yoasobi talked about a story of her visiting Boston 13-14 years ago as a young girl with her family for some reason and said that she’d never believe she would come back to Boston again but singing on stage on a concert tour; who knows, maybe she has family here or has connections with Boston.
The population density is pretty well distributed as well, even the most dense regions in Boston didn’t seem that congested to me and it’s well distributed across the large area of Boston and the weather is very nice, very cool and mild considering it’s August, noice. Overall Boston is a great city to live in and I’m sure to work, study and play in; it’s like a better version of Toronto with better sports teams and way less congested and it’s population better spread out relational to it’s geographical spaces considering it is also one of the oldest American cities. Not bad Boston, would visit again for some other convention, concert or event if it ever arises.
