Just too many to watch, just hold on, I’m on mai way… might have to end up postponing some shit and marathon once the season is over.
Netoge no Yome wa Onnanoko ja Nai to Omotta – The translated title of this show is something along the lines of “So you didn’t think there was any real girls in online games?” or close to that, I think they had the title shown but I can’t remember but yea, this is what this show is about; girls that play online games, essentially a harem comedy. So we have, I dunno main guy, he has a real name and an ingame name, I can’t be bothered to name either of them so let’s just call him Yuto, why Yuto? Because it’s a name that I hate. So anyways, Yuto is the usual hardcore anime/game otaku, playing dem Ragnarok Online/Tree of Savior (literally this is what it looks like he’s playing) and he has party/guild of 2 guys and 1 girl character. The beginning of the show starts off with him marrying the girl in-game reluctantly and such, girl pretty happy. His party and shit does usual online game grinding, killing them orcs and killing orc hero for drops and exp, yawn. they talk about usual shit. End game time. Yuto goes to school and talks with his friends and shit about anime/games, some blonde twintail girl comes up to him saying he’s disgusting and looks down on his hobbies/lifestyles, friends are like man, she is hot but a bitch, tsundere right? Yuto is like nah man, not tsundere, just double tsun. So back to game time and guild bros are like yo, we should all meet up IRL and shit, in-game waifu is all like yay, I hate normal people and hype. Yuto is like ok, I hope my ingame waifu isn’t a guy. So said offline meeting happens and surprize surprize, your ingame waifu is actually a cute shy girl with big boobs, yay for you Yuto. Actually your 2 other bros in-game are actually also cute girls that go to your school, which all play guy characters; one of which is the blonde girl who dissed him the day before in class, usual WTF ah man what are you doing here. Thus sets the premise of the show. The concept has been done before, with the wizards and game shit and all but it’s a mildly interesting twist to a formula that generally is ho-hum. The girls are fairly attractive but not super good, ok, and the animation is decent enough. Maybe watch more, we’ll see.
Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress – Oh boy, where to begin with this. So at the very start of the show i am treated with this hardcore looking train, a la the movie snow piercer ruining some shit, plowing through hordes of hordes of what I can only think of are zombies in the path of the brutal train. The zombies are attacking and biting killing people on the train as they desperately try to fight them off. After the initial ruin, title card shows up and some mild world building goes on with the villages of a station outpost or something, japan steampunk fusion. Main dude is like train mechanic or something and talk about the world with his co-workers and shit, wants to fight zombies, tired of running away a la Eren Yeager. Later said snow piercer train comes into town and they unload the passengers with strict protocol, screening everyone they think could be infected/potential zombie. Some innocents get killed. Some girl in a kimono gets off the trains but is special, doesn’t get inspected, cute. Main guy gets jailed for trying to standup for guy who got killed. Fast forward a bit and the station outpost village is getting raided by zombies and panic happens, girl with kimono is seen and talks with main guy, lets him out of jail. Some fighting happens and ruin. Main guy gets bitten but runs to his house, fight more zombies with his new gun, hardcore resists the infection/curse, basically tries to strangle himself and it actually works but makes his hair partly white, survives. While this is going on kimono girl is killing some zombie with her kicks. Cool. If there is anything that must be said first about this show is that the production value, the overall quality of the animation and detail put into everything is extremely high, I’m like saying almost movie level quality. The backgrounds are very detailed and almost look like paintings while the characters designs are equally impressive. The character designs themselves are very unique, they look very vintage and old-school looking style similar to that of the 80’s and maybe early 90’s; this is apparent in the main character but especially for the girls of this show; they simply don’t draw girls like that today, which made me think that this is somehow an adaption of some older manga/written work, but when i looked it up, I was surprised to find that this shit is original and that the character designer is Haruhiko Mikimoto, famous for 80’s Macross which explains everything. Paired with the fact that the director is the same guy that did Death Note and Attack on Titan, we are looking at an early candidate for most epic show of the year already. With that said, I’m probably gonna watch this show, it’s just too well produced and well done to not watch it.
Re Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu – This shit started out with 2 parts, 1A and 1B, shit man, I hate when they do stuff like this, but I suppose it’s kind of necessary for this show, due to the inherent slow moving nature and foregone conclusion, which, if not shown in episode “1” 90% of people would stop watching and drop this shit already. I’m gonna get straight to the point for the main gimmick of this show. Fantasy world + repeating time loop + gotta prevent x characters death. So we got fag main guy, let’s call him Shu, why? Because I like three letter names and I like Liu Bei. So anyways Shu is just a normal neet faggot in the normal world, at a convenience store derping it up and shit. Goes outside and feels sleepy some random shot is shown of something saying, “I gotta save you this time” or something. Shu doses off and wakes up in fantasy world filled with orcs and animal people again. He meets some girl with white hair with nice design and wants to help her find some shit that was stolen from here. They do stuff. They end up at some tavern, they get owned. Dude wakes up back at the same point when he first got to this world, does the same shit again, but doesn’t meet the white haired girl, goes directly to the tavern, different events unfold, still gets killed, repeat. etc. Yawn, this has been done before by so many things, steins gate, blazblue, “erased” and countless others and done much better. The girls design are actually very attractive but the look kind of cheap and Shu is pretty shit looking, especially his haircut. Whatever, there are better things out there to watch.
Shounen Maid – Should be renamed as “Gay Maid”, cause that’s what this basically is and who it’s for, women target audience. Despite it’s name it’s gay content is pretty mild and dependent on female imagination. So we got our main boy, let’s call him Rin. Why Rin? Because Rin is kind of a unisex name and he’s a SHONEN MAID after all, cause technically you would be a BUTLER RITE? But anyways, yea, boy is poor, mom just died of something and gets picked up to live with his rich asshole uncle who is a dress maker, probably gay for real. Boy didnt’ know his mom was originally rich, uncle explains cause your mom ran away and turned her back on family shit or something. Boy is like nah man, I dun wanna be wit u, you gay. Uncle is like please, live here boy, in exchange for living here clean the mansion. Boy is like, ok, u crib is lik sht anwai. Thus the premise of the show. Boring, gay, not for me. poor designs but I can understand why some women would like this.
Kiznaiver – This is studio Triggers first “real” anime offering since kill la kill almost 2 years ago since they’ve been doing tons of mini-shows and other side work since then. Main guy can’t feel pain, so people bully him and shit, doesn’t give a shit anymore. Some dude rescues him from bully, has some girl friend as well that wants to support him or something. Goes to school, see range of students and other characters. Some shit happens. He is confronted by some rich looking girl with long blue hair, looks a bit like Murokumo/Amakaze from Kantai collection, pushes him off stairs. It is implied that he is injured and a sequence of strange looking dressed up mascots come and abduct him and bring him to some lab, where they do some shit to him. He wakes up and other people he met are there as well. Blue haired girl is also there and explains to them this shit about Kiznaiver system or something, wanting to save the world by making people understand pain and their thoughts/points of view, a la Gundam newtypes. So yea, this Kiznaiver thing is done to all these people and whenever someone gets hurt everyone feels it, ok. Yea, I suppose the premise of the show is since everyone is connected, gotta solve everyone’s problems or else bad shit happens. The concept is somewhat unique but it’s kind of slow pacing for me, a big difference from kill la kill which was so in your face outrageous. The character designs are pretty similar to kill la kill, blonde girl looks alot like nuit i think. Decent quality and designs but not really my thing.
Haifuri – This show is literally the product of our times. This is what you get if you combine Kantai Collection and a pure slice of life moe anime series with a dash of arpeggio of blue steel/Gundam Seed drama, essentially high school girls on WWII boats doing navy/sailor things/training/battle. Main girl and her childhood friend do some flashback to when they were kids, enjoy seeing the warships come into the port and dream of joining the “Blue Mermaids” which I can only assume is some kind of police/coast guard paramilitary force in this alternative modern day Japanese world. For some reason all or most of the great Imperial Japanese WWII fleet still exists, such as the Musashi. It’s not fully explained yet what is really going on in this world yet but whatever it is, I don’t think it’s a war or battle, cause slice of life school yo elements. After initial pleasantries and introductions with starting the first day of school, main girl meets second main girl and they both end up assigned/stationed at the destroyer Harekaze, which the main girl finds herself being assigned the role of captain to her surprize. Main girl is pretty standard main girl, hype, optimistic and kind of a ditz but cares about her friends and shit. Second main girl is like standard serious type responsible girl. The entire class/crew of the Harekaze is all girls, which I can only assume is because it’s the law, good, I don’t need any fag Teitokus around on my boat full of waifus. All of the girls designs are very good and attractive although I admit that there is too many of them. The overall animation of the show is good, using the same kind of 3dcg for boat scenes with clean crisp animation for everything else. The concept is honestly a bit surprising if not a bit bold since no one can deny that this show is the end product of a bunch of anime directors/producers brainstorming what is hot in today’s anime otaku meta culture. The opening sequence has a really catchy song too. Either way, I’ll probably end up watching this too, cuz, boats yo, boats.
Sakamoto desu ga – I’ve been looking forward to this show for quite some time now, having read a good chunk of the manga a couple of years ago. It’s just so jokes and up my alley, even though it’s obviously targeted towards women, but Sakamoto is so cool it makes everyone gay for him. So Sakamoto is the the coolest kid in class yo, he’s handsome, smart, athletic, kind and pretty much the best at doing everything, all the girls love him and all the guys want to be him. Except for a bunch of hoodlums that want to bring him down because they are jealous and shit. So the basic premise and flow of this show goes like this; show Sakamoto being cool/pro at something > have a bunch of haters hating and trying to plot something to ruin his shit > haters try to execute plan > Sakamoto ruins their shit by making the best of the situation, helps the said haters in some unexpected way > haters end up loving and respecting Sakamoto because of it. It’s a simple but very effective formula that easily makes for gold comedic material, mainly at the expense of the haters and Sakamoto himself for being so outrageously pro/cool that it’s laughable. The character designs are faithfully re-produced in this show and the animation is good enough for what it is. This is a jokes show and I’ll be watching this no matter what. Good shit jokes.
Usakame – Crap mini show where I literally did not know what was going on, or paid enough attention to warrant greater attention. I’m assuming it’s kind of slice of life comedy-ish with a bunch of girls but my main problem with this show is the art direction/character designs. Style of animation art looks like watercolors/pencil crayons and the animation is choppy as fuck, keyframes where? You can only get away with using super deformed chibis for so long. At the end of the show there is some real life idol dancing segment which I can only assume are the voice actors of all the characters, which leads me to believe that this is just some tie-in debut gimmick/supplemental work for some idol group.
More to come…good shit man.
