May 2016 Tokyo Treat box, let’s see what I got last month and have been gradually consuming since then. I actually forgot to take photos of all the stuff still in it’s box but ah-well. This box was very green, in the sense that alot of the stuff is green tea or matcha flavored; which I am assuming is because May is the time for new green tea leaves and stuff. Appropriately, the top image is of Chiya from gochuumon wa usagi desu ka? (Is the order a rabbit?) who runs a traditional Japanese cafe in the show, and wears something of a green kimono maid type of clothing. Green tea themed box and a green character? Let’s do this shit.
Look at this bad ass. I can’t remember who this guy is on the bag but if I remember correctly it’s supposed to be some famous kabuki/Japanese actor and apparently this is his brand of chips, curry flavored chips. Hmm. bad ass.
I’ve been wanting to try umaibo’s ever since they were featured in Dagashi Kashi as they are the main girl’s, Hotaru’s favorite cheap ass snack. Apparently each of these sticks only costs like 10 yen, that’s like holy shit cheap man. Of course they are super ghetto small and such but what do you expect?
These were some crazy rice wafer things which were really thin but the main pull for this is it comes with a kind of sour plum jam that you spread on the crackers. The jam is kind of sweet, salty and yet sour at the same time, it’s really weird but it goes well with the rice crackers. Pretty interesting and different.
Alright the full spread of shit, let’s do this:
1 – As mentioned previously, this is some bad-ass’s curry flavored chips; let’s just call him Nakamura; meaning this would technically be called Nakamura’s bad ass tasty curry potato chips. Oh ya, works for me. Strong potato flavor. Decent curry flavor. Pretty good, good shit.
2 – I think these were some cheese chips or crackers? All I remember of these is that it’s supposed to be cheese flavor. Pretty good, although not that memorable, good yes but will I go out of my way to get these again. Nope, still fairly edible good though.
3 – This is the drink this box, some shizuka green tea flavored soda. Really nice bottle and design, very classy traditional looking. At the end of the day however, it’s basically sugar water with alot of matcha powder in it. Kinda of tastes like cream soda again but will green tea again. Not really feeling it this time with this drink but at least the bottle is really cool. Might keep it for aesthetic purposes.
4 – Some green tea brownie thing. I didn’t eat it, gave it to my sister to eat. She didn’t finish it, garbage. I can only assume then that this tasted like shit. Ahwell.
5 – I think the name for this thing was like jin-chan’s crazy dried cod fish bites or something. Funny. The packaging has this punk looking rocker dude and he’s all like yelling and shit to some fish looking people who look scared and shit. Not bad, kinda fishy and spicy tasting, I ate it all but nothing that I couldn’t get elsewhere.
6 – Green tea matcha pocky. Pretty solid and great looking packaging, so classy and cool with the black. The sticks themselves just taste like chocholate but with a hint of green tea. If I didn’t know any better I would just say it’s green chocolate. Comes in 2 packages. Pretty good.
7 – As mentioned earlier, this month’s box came with 3 umaibo. These are corn flavored hollow sticks that come in bunch of new and interesting flavors, only 30 yen in japan. The flavors I got were I think, lobster-mayo salad, cream-corn soup, and I think salami or sausage? I’m not so sure about the last one but either way these were pretty good considering what they are supposed to be. Not to mention I get to pretend to be like all anime-tie in and shit with Dagashi Kashi. Yea boi.
8 – As mentioned earlier, these are like rice crackers that come with some crazy plum jam. Salty, sweet and sour, it’s very strange and an acquired taste but I think if you eat it long enough, you’ll love it. I’m not on that bandwagon yet but in the end I did eat them all so yea, not bad shit.
9 – I don’t even know, some stupid do it yourself kit again, gave to sister, haven’t heard anything yet.
10 – Green tea kitkat. It’s kinda funny how they give me these 3 individual small packs and not a full on kit-kat bar. Maybe shit’s too expensive? Probably. Standard green tea kitkat. Don’t remember eating them, maybe gave away.
11 – These are like biscuits with green tea chocolate on them. Not bad, I like the name, Crunky. Solid shit, although nothing too special about them.
12 – I think this is the toy of this boy, got those mushroom mascot guys again, not sure what this was to be honest. Can’t remember, sister took it.
13 – This is some gum featuring popular lazy egg mascot gudetama that comes with a sticker i think. Whatever, sister took it.
14 – I can only assume this is green tea flavored cookies or something like that. Didn’t try yet but I’m sure it will probably taste like green tea.
15 – Is this another toy thing? another muschroom mascot? They sure gave a lot of gimmick toys and treats, I don’t think this one even had candy on it, not sure.
Overall this box was ok, not as good as the previous month but on the up side I did get some bad ass’s curry chips, cheeze crackers and finally some umaibo. Tons of green tea stuff and while I don’t mind green tea, I’m not a super fan like some people and for me this was a little too much green. Too much stupid gimmick mascot shit too. Ahwell, I renewed for another 3 months so let’s see how things go with the upcoming June box.
Score: Not really feeling it, although I can get behind more of some badass curry chips
