Anime Review Spring Season

Spring Anime 2017 Part II

Spring. The season of youth. Looks like I’m getting tons of youth anime. So far nothing horrible and a few stand out shows, things are looking good this season.

Sakura Quest – This is an excellent show. From the same studio that brought you Shirobako comes another original anime story in the same veins of locodol, non-non biyori and a few other slice of life anime that are just too real to not watch. So it’s like this; main girl is in tokyo trying real hard to get a job before she finishes college, which is very soon. She’s only been doing ghetto jobs and some basic modelling in magazines or ads till now but so far she hasn’t gotten far. She doesn’t want to go back to her hometown in the country but out of desperation she manages to get a gig in another small town being the “queen” from her modelling agent. She doesn’t know what that means but goes anyways to the hick town. When she gets there it turns out there was a mistake and the people there wanted someone else. After some begging and talking she decides to convince the townspeople to let her do the job anyways. She is then introduced that she is the “queen” of a gimmicky promotional village to self promote the village and it’s local industry like farming and shit. She’s like yea, whatever crown me and do the ceremony with this bullshit story and goes along with the pageantry. Relieved that the day is over she finds out that the job is not just this one time, but the job of being the “queen” is for a full year. She naturally goes full on wtf modes and tries to run away but to no avail as the villagers are all in on it and foil her escape. After some talking she accepts it and embraces her new job for the next year. The character designs of this show are excellent, the main girl is cute and cheerful and the animation doesn’t miss a beat, all clean fluid and crisp lines. The intro sequence shows me that there are a number of other girls going to be introduced no doubt to be part of the town revival project and all look great. The concept of this show is nothing new but the execution so far is spot on, I’m looking forward to more of this. Good shit.

Seikaisuru Kado – This is technically an episode 0 which means that whatever I watch is not an accurate representation of what the show will turn out to be. However, from just the opening sequence with it’s sick ass style and music it looks really interesting. Full of mystery, drama and suspense. Main dude, I think his name is Kado I think is a government employee set to resolve the purchasing and bankruptcy of companies related to the government. In this episode him and his gay bro do the rounds of government and visit a metal factory that they are tasked to negotiate buy out money from the government. Instead, Kado does the opposite, he tries to innovate and help the company develop new metal technology that will save the company and want to make the government invest in it. He does so and saves the company. His next job is relating to foreign affairs and him and his gay bro get on a plane to head overseas to do shit. However, just as the plane in on the runway a giant energy/mechanized cube of some shit comes from the sky and falls ontop of the plane, completely engulfing them. End episode. So yea, I have no idea where they show is heading but my guess is: Aliens, alternate dimensions or something sci-fi even though it doesn’t feel like it from episode 0 but the intro heavily suggests it. The animation is ok but it’s weird, it jumps back in forth between 3dcg and traditional 2d. I can understand 3dcg used for action or high movement scenes but they used that shit for dudes sitting in a plane. what the fuck? I dunno, might watch more but we’ll see. Char design is bland but it’s to be expected from this kind of show.

Tsuki ga Kirei – An extremely overly sentiment romance coming of age story of some fag boy and some girl during the last year of middle school. Yea, full of hazy shots and awkward moments of youth. Tons of blank stares of both boys and girls looking embarrassed and things of that sort. Not my kind of thing but i’m sure it would be of interest to some. I honest can’t remember what happened in the episode other than the standard prose of starting a new year and shit. The most memorable thing I can remember is a segment where the main fag boy and girl are both in a family restaurant with their respective families having dinner and the awkward feels you get when you see someone outside of school with their parents/and such and you feel so not cool. Best part is when the girl is all like so nervous and embarrassed and is all like “I wish I had my squeezey with me” her little toy thing that she squishes to feel CALM. I like CALM THINGS. I can get behind that. And the boy trying to be all manly and shit and gets ice coffee instead of melon soda infront of the girl cause he doesn’t want to look like a wussy kid, which he is. Well the char design of this show is shit but suit the tone and direction overall, mainly sentimental and round. Probably won’t watch cause yea, I got my monies worth already with that “squeezey” thing.

Renai Boukun – A failed show that could have been alright had it not been designed by visually impaired animators and blind art directors. So we got main fag, let’s call him “Blue” cause that’s all I got to remember him by; his fucking hair color. Yea, boi. So demon girl shows up to Blue one day is all like, hay, I need to you pimp out and kiss as many girls as possible because I wrote in my “Love Note” or whatever that you have to. Blue is all like, y tho? and demon girl is all like, cause if you don’t you’ll die, and i will die to if you don’t kiss what was written in this book or something like this. Some hijinks insues and Blue ends up going to school with demon girl and he kisses the standard “hottest girl” in school, turns out the “hottest girl” with big boobs and red hair actually secretly liked Blue all along and is cool with it. However, it turns that that she is straight up hardcore Yandere and tries to kill him for being with the demon girl. Some other shit happens and the three of them end up in some kind of contract with the demon girl and are now immortal. A secret yuri gay admirer of “hottest girl” appears and tries to do shit aswell. Some other shit happens and it ends up that she becomes immortal to. Turns out the demon girl isn’t demon at all but actually an angel but just likes to cosplay as a demon cause it’s cool. Sure, ok. Yea. So basic premise of the show is some kind of shit harem comedy with Blue and friends. Yea, whatever, this should be decent but the problem is that all the character designs are kinda shit and all have off-black off-white outlines. What that means is that if the character has black hair, she has gray outlines. Fuck. Why? This looks horrible. Whatever, shit show, nothing here.

Clockwork Planet – For a show that has a really really cool sounding name you would expect something amazing. But atlas, that is not so and should instead probably be a warning sign. Honestly, this show can be summed up with a sentence or two, so I’m going to try my best here: Clockwork Planet features a boy and his magical robotic android maid-like guardian girl that can fight and do things on a planet that is covered with gears and mechanized shit. They will no doubt meet a horrible villain and their world will either be destroyed or face impending doom unless they stop the villain and band together with similar friends with similar goals to meet that end all the while befriending other cute designed robot girls and such in the interests of fan service and furthering the boy’s budding puberty and need for love of which he will come to realize all can be obtained from his robot maid.  The end. A little long but I think that works. Yea, it’s a convoluted mess of shit. I summarized this show and I’m still not entirely sure what the first episode was about other than the fag boy awakening his maid robot and some fighting. The character designs overall are shit with the only exception being the maid robot girl, she looks fantastic and is something straight out of rozen maiden, aesthetically very similar to Suigintou. Not enough however, shit show.

Boku no Hero Academia – Well here this shit is, second season of ALL MIGHT the show. If there’s anything from what I watched, I must give these guys props for being honest about where the direction of the show is heading in the immediate future. In the introduction sequence we see all the kids in the same uniformed clothes in a stadium with each other. Oh yea, they are doing it already. Fucking sports school battle tournament already. Shit. Ah well, I’ll still watch this just for ALL MIGHT. It was bound to happen, I just didn’t think it would happen so soon. Solid animation and the works. Try my best to keep up, we’ll see.

Eromanga-sensei – So this is basically the next gen Oreimo with a few twists which all together make for an interesting watch. We have fool, he’s the main dude; fool is a light novel author; he’s been writing for a long time but only got published relatively recently to moderate success. Fool is in highschool I think. So anyways fool lives with his little sister; who is currently a hikkomori and doesn’t go out to school and the such. Fool has only seen his sister once; on the day they met when their parents got married and moved into the same house together; cause you know; it solidifies the most important thing about this kind of show: they are non-blood related siblings. With that out of the way, it’s told by fool that both of their parents died in an accident shortly after meeting and since that day little sis had turned hikkomori. Sure, so dude takes care of her meals and such in usual typical hikkomori caretaker manner. Fool only started writing for fun but since they needed money, he started doing it seriously as a job on the side. All of his novels are illustrated by a mysterious artist named eromanga-sensei which he himself has never met, which he assumes is just some pervert dude based on the pen-name. Some time passes and he decides to checkout a livestream of eromanga-sensi drawing some shit online on nico or whatever. As expected, some shit happens and comes to realize that eromanga-sensei is actually his little sister. Wow, surprise surprise, I totally didn’t’ see that coming. Yea right. Fool later then barges into her room to confront her and talk to her. Some shit happens and they are good, kinda, sort; I guess? Setting the basic premise of the show and future hi-jinks. Most important question for this type of show: is eromanga-sensi cute? The answer simply is yes. So yea, good cute character designs and I’m sure a whole bunch of funnies and drama is to be had in this show from sis and no doubt other girl characters. The first episode they put some heavy drama already so i hope they lighten up a bit with more comedy later. Will watch. Good.

Love Kome – We Love Rice – What is this shit? Gay show about gay boys trying to promote rice over bread? Mini show? Fuck this shit. Wait, I see the ending credits. This shit is sponsored and co-created by COOKPAD, the largest and most popular japanese cooking site in japanese web and moderately so in english? Shit. Looks like i’m watching this. papadesuyo777 HERE I COME.

Twin Angel BREAK – Magical girl shows fall primarily into categories; serious drama, slice of life or comedy. This show is somewhere between slice of life and comedy which is cool and what most magical girl shows aim for. Main girl is cute and has pinkish hair and side ponytail (doing nanoha proud), she is coming from a small ass island to go to school in the big city. When she gets to the city cue the usual tropes of small town girl going into the big city and such. She goes to school and she meets a cast of funny cute classmates with weird traits and such, drawn quite well for side characters I might add. She meets a cold-eyed girl with long blue-purple hair and they instantly don’t get along due to personality clashes. Some shit happens and some talking hamster appears that gives her powers to transform into a magical girl. Hamster is voiced by kugimiya rie; sad how the old tsundere queen has to take animal roles and shit now, her time has passed…anyways main girl does her shit and fights some bad guy sucking energy from the students or something. Her weapon is a spiky morning-star/flail lol what the fuck kinda jokes. Beating of minions ensues and when she gets into trouble blue-purple hair girl shows up and saves the day, her weapon is a naginata and is a magical girl too. Yay. Daily bad guy ded unfortunately (voiced by Takehito Koyasu, DIO BRANDO, EDDIE, GUNDAM SEED MASK GUY). Tsundere queen then says that they are a pair, the TWIN ANGELS and they are destined to work together as a team. As expected blue girl is all like no, I don’t want to do this anymore and resists while main girl is all like; so, where’s the next battle? Yea. The character design of this show is pretty good and the animation is sweet. The transformation sequence is better than the new sailor moon shit that’s for sure. This show reminds of Nurse Witch Komugi-chan R, which is a verifiable shit show but so so much better in basically everything. I like magical girls. This is a magical girl show. I like this. It’s dumb. I am dumb. So i guess it works out. Watch more.

THE iDOLM@STER CINDERELLA GIRLS Theater – A mini show featuring chibi versions of the idolmaster Cinderella girls doing cute and funny things in daily life. I think this is based off a web comic or long running 4-koma strip so I guess they figured might as well. The jokes are dank and relevant to idolmaster fans i suppose. I liked idolmaster cinderella girls anime so i will enjoy this mini show as well. I’m sure this is a run up to a possible sequel to the original Cinderella girls anime since there are a lot of new girls in this thing that were never in the anime. Yea, gotta support your idol waifs. “I’ll do my best”™ to watch this shit.

More to come, more good shit to come.
