Anime Review Summer Season

Summer Anime 2017 Part I

It’s that time again, summer anime review season. Summer for the most part has been known as a chill time where lots of slice of life and sports shows take main stage, will it be the same this year around? We’ll see.

Knight’s & Magic – Based off the name of this show I would think I would be seeing knights and magic but the first 5 minutes or so tell me otherwise. So we got Jin, he’s jin because he feels like a jin. Jin is a pro programmer and we see him working miracles close to the deadline in a typical Japanese office worker fashion. After the fact we see his co-workers praising him saying shit like he’s a genius and such but he’s mech otaku and all that, cue dat boi shopping for gundam model kits and such getting hype. Jin does the usual thing and accidentally dies getting hit by a car, with his final thoughts being damn, I won’t ever be able to build my kits now. Next thing we see is some fantasy world and a queen with her little boy, the little boy “awakens” and gets woke. Jin has been re-incarnated into this fantasy world where magic and giant mech like knight things are piloted but still retains all or much of his memories of his human/past life where he was a programmer. So ya, that’s the basic premise of the show, it’s literally a “serious” konasuba with mecha gundam elements. Cool Cool but the problem so far from the first ep is that as we see New Jin boy grow up, you would never know that he was supposedly re-incarnated, nothing the kid does or says directly reflect his programming knowledge and the old world you would just think the kid is very very smart and hype. Boy looks like a girl, currently voiced by a girl but that may change with time jumps and stuff. Done before concept probably won’t watch, nothing of worth here. Animation decent but not worth anything if show is shit.

Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun – Summer is the time for sports, so here is a nice soccer show about a boy with a mental disability. Don’t get me wrong, of course the boy is super pro at soccer and shit but what this show is about is essentially trying to make a mental illness a funny and cool thing to have, which for anime is kinda a thing I guess. So it’s like this, we got this boy Aoyama or whatever, he has a problem. He is a germaphobe, crazy ass scared of dirty, grim and filth and is constantly cleaning his surroundings for his own sanity. Cool cool but wait, this boy is so good at soccer that the school soccer team don’t give a shit about this and is on the team anyways. Cue that single naysayer #1 saying shit like how he doesn’t like him because he’s not a team player, always avoiding physical contact, high-fives and the general bro-ship that comes with sports. He dont liek him. Yep. So anyways shit happens and Aoyama proves everyone otherwise that he does care for winning and shit and wins them a game against a tough rival school. Show ensues. Aoyama himself is kinda like the school silent type guy and is loved by all the girls and shit, ok. There are a number of decent girls in this show but nevertheless this is still a show for women. Decent animation, stupid premise, sports shit, whatever. Some would like, but not for me, mild funny hidden gay.

Battle Girl High School – Not entirely sure what this show is based off of but it looks to me a mobile game, it only makes sense right? With a name like that? So with that said there is a large cast of cute girls and they transform and shit getting special clothes and unique weapons to each such as sword, lance, gun, spear, scythe etc. The uniforms when in transformed state are all very similar with mainly color varying between each like blue, light blue, red, pink, yellow, green, purple etc but are all essentially the same design. So from what I gather they are in school to teach them fighting to fight monsters and the usual, with teacher support and the like acting as commanders and etc. Cue standard school life at girl only school tropes. Training and daily task. Yea. I dunno, there’s not much here really, the designs are decent and the girls cute enough but there’s no direction or goal yet to be seen. There are alot of shows similar to this and this unfortunately doesn’t manage to make itself any more interesting. Dull, boring and uninspired, can do so much better but not super horrible. Nope.

Enmusubi no Youko-chan – My thoughts on this show went like this: “Oh boy, it’s a show that has —-chan in the title, it must be good or at least funny, maybe slice of life” *watches 5 seconds in and I see some chinese looking wolf girl talking to some little boy or something, steals all of his shit and home *30 seconds in I see Tencent logo an opening sequence plays with a chinese song and I mentally do a nope, fuck this shit *goes have a shit *comes back to the the video still playing, scans through the episode, sees some Chinese people doing some bullshit magic, horrible *closes file, onto the next show. Man, why. Unless this shit is Thunderbolt Fantasy 2 or some other Chinese puppet show I don’t wanna see any of this Chinese paid for anime.

Katsugeki Touken Ranbu – Hmm, is Touken Ranbu still popular? I kind of find it weird how this further simplified kancolle browser game for women can have 2 anime series made and kancolle only has the anime and movie? What the fuck? Is this shit still that popular among women? I suppose so since this adaptation just from the tone and quality of the animation is a considerable step above from the first anime. The first anime was kinda slice of life-ish showcasing all the pretty boys and shit with mild serious moments. This one, done by ufotable I am feeling is going with the fate/stay night route with serious story and high action fighting scenes. From what I saw in the first episode it’s not bad, if I was a women I’d watch it if I played the game/knew what was going on. Not for me but it seems ok. Yea.

Isekai Shokudou – So yea, this is the best show so far this season. It’s like this, there is a restaurant that serves otherworldly guests, in the day its a normal cafe but at night a door opens to a fantasy world where monsters, dragons, wizards, knights and shit are the normal. The chef of the cafe then serves it’s patrons food from the normal human world. That’s about it in essence. It’s a food show, what else is there to say? A slightly more in-depth overview? Well here it is: Girl from the fantasy world is a demon, has horns and shit but is really weak by demon standards and decides to live in the fantasy world human town to make a living. After a series of unfortunate events, she ends up finding the portal door and into the kitchen of said chef. She ends up eating some leftovers and falls asleep. Chef dude finds her and says whats up, demon girl tells of her story; they eat food, chef dude offers her a job as a waitress at the restaurant. Done. Yep. This is good. Excellent original premise, good character designs, story and style, just good tone overall. The demon girl is cute and the chef is cool, which is so important Will watch for sure.

Koi to Uso – Depending on who you are this show will make you say “hey, that’s a great idea”, “how sweet”, “how romantic” or you will get triggered for whatever reason due to it’s romance cliche’s and it’s overall cringe worthiness and unrealistically unfeasible premise in general. So it’s like this, in this world’s Japan, the government by 1975 had already identified the slowing birthrate and that DE-population of the japanese people would be a huge issue in the future, thus they in-acted some law where arranged marriages would be setup for all youth by the time they reach the age of 16. Years pass and the policy has been regarded as widely successful, having increased the Japanese population to stable levels. Fast forward to today and we are introduced to “that boy”. You know what i’m talking about, “that boy” has vowed to not obey the government policy for whatever reason. Cool cool, sure our boy believes in true love huh? That’s fine, he hasn’t reached his 16th birthday yet so he still got time left, by the end of the day really. So with this in mind he decides of course to confront his longtime crush of 5 YEARS and tries to confess his beautiful pure love, clearly noting that he literally only spoke to her once during that time to share half of his eraser with her, a memory which he cherishes as he keeps the half eraser in a golden chest and shit. So “that boy” is actually really “stalker boy”. Alight, cool cool that’s fine I guess. So when he tries to do the deed the first time fucking girl says he doesn’t even know him. LOL WUT. Anyways our boy nevertheless musters up some courage and asks her to meet with him after school at some park or whatever, yea, cliche to speak with her. Cool Cool, so far so good. Of course the boy totally doesn’t expect her to show up but waits there for like 5 hours or something until it’s night, all the while wasting the time building burial mounds out of sand….er yea. So of course shit is like late now, and the boy has all but given up and decides to go home, feeling that he has failed his mission; but of course you know what happens, the girl shows up, dressed all nice now in casual clothes, clearly showcasing to the viewer “oh hay, I have big boobs oh I also put on sexy thigh-highs for this special occasion” and is beautiful etc etc. Awkward moments ensues and our boy does the deed, saying that even though she doesn’t even know him, he’s loved her for 5 YEARS and etc, fully expecting her rejection. Wow wow, surprise surprise, not really, turns out the girl actually DOES know him and he had been lying about it all along. Girl then confesses to our boy saying that SHE HAS BEEN IN LOVE WITH HIM ALL THESE 5 YEARS AS WELL, EVER SINCE THE ERASER INCIDENT and pulls out the other half of the eraser that she has been idolizing just like he was before. FUCK. WHAT THE. FUCK. SERIOUSLY? What ensues is some super sentimental sappy scene where they realize that both of them are essentially stalkers and they decide to kiss and shit with tears of joy and everything. Hurray. Yay Yay. Boy got a GF, Girl got a BF now. Ring ring, oh shit dat his phone, it’s 12:00am, you are now 16 years old, looks like you got a notification email telling you who your future waifu is. Our boy is dismayed at the idea but he looks anyways; OH SHIT the name of your new stalker girlfriend is listed! uh oh, wait a second, why is my phone’s screen becoming distorted and shit, and automatically turns off. Wat. Two shadowy figures appear out of nowhere in the park and congratulate him on his 16 years old and hands him an envelope with his selected future bride. Boy is confused and shit, looks at the paper; naturally it’s not the name of your new girlfriend and asks the government people. He tries to see if there was an error but the suits say there is no mistake, their matches are absolute, you cannot change it. Boy and girl are obviously upset and devastated, girl runs, boy runs to chase after her (good job) and the hug and cry in the middle of the road vowing to fight the power. Yeh. So it’s like this, there is 2 outcomes for the end of this show: 1. Boy manages to fight the power and marries his true love stalker or 2. Boy eventually meets his arranged waifu, hates her at first but ends up loving her, and vice versa with her and they marry happily, same for original stalker eraser girl too, she falls in love with her picked match. There is a third and fourth option actually: 3. Someone or all of them die or 4. the show ends horribly in an eternal love triangle of cringe (worst possible outcome, death is better). The show has an original concept I must say which I praise, but the tone and the sentimentality is just over the top too much for me to digest. Shit. I kinda want to know how it ends and if they all die or they do the worst possible outcome. After writing so much I kinda feel obliged now to give the show at shot, even though I never intended to watch it to being with. Fuck. We’ll see. Show is essentially for girls I think based off premise and character designs but yea, it’s ok.

Hina Logi – From Luck & Logic – Some magical girl crap that is hardly worth your time in any instance. Shit pacing, crap characters, not bad transform state however and designs are above average. Questionable motives and story line, just bleh plain done before. Something about a tomboy princess from the country, magic school, pro magic student bodyguard, fighting some unknown monsters etc. Tone is weird, tries to be funny but there is literally no music and shit so it feels really slow and lacking of the “fun” or slice of life take that is kinda wants to do but fails really hard. I don’t even want to try to summarize this one further so move on, there are other magical girl shits around. Nope.

More to come…
