Another year and another Fan Expo under my belt. What’s that now, I think maybe 5 years consecutively? Oh shit, I guess I’ve gotten used to this yearly event to mark the end of summer. Heh. In any regards let’s get another post rolling to re-cap my experience at Toronto’s “Premier”convention.
Once again expectations must be set, meaning that since this is indeed Fan Expo you can pretty much expect horrible piss poor presence of anime content and guests even though they still continue to claim it as one of their areas to cover. At this point you can pretty much call this convention “Fictional stuff that I like” and anything else that I remotely have interest in that may or may not be perceived as nerdy or geeky. Yea, that’s how it’s rolling these days in 2017.
I normally put a shot of myself strolling down the spiral underground garage but I’ll pass this time. Nothing much to see here, the price this year for Sun was $50 which is an increase of $5 from last year; for Saturday, it went from $60 to $65 at the door. Fuck, every year this thing gets more and more expensive just to enter the door.
Last year we had Lego with a buttload of display and presence, this year we got…Mega Construx? I have no idea what shit is this but I can only assume it’s from Mattel.

I came across the famous sakimichan’s booth again and ended up buying more shit from her. I totally forgot to take a photo of her display but it’s about the same as last year in the same spot. When I was talking to the person helping her manage the table she asked if I was a local, I said yea and she told me if I was interested in attending “Kimi kon” a new convention organized by sakimichan that’s going to happen NEXT year Oct 19-21, 2018 at the Enercare Centre, which is where the CNE is. Wow. I guess she got tired of relying on the AN/ FanExpo corruption and conventions in the US and elsewhere for revenue and said fuck it, I’m gonna create my own convention to sell artworks. lololol oh shit that’s serious business. Too bad the WIP email list is so small right now, I suppose “John” will be first in line. Who knows, I’m kinda curious how this will play out and check it out next year in Oct.

I remember this artist. Last year I thought it was pretty good shit and wanted to buy but when I came around the artist wasn’t there so I didn’t get anything. This time she was so I picked up some things from her aswell. Very well done artwork.
She also had something pretty unique unlike the other artists, she did daikimura pillow covers! There were samples on the right, pretty good print quality and soft fabric. Only $40 dollars! Her artwork was spot on for the characters seen in the image above but I can’t help but feel that she could have done more to make it more risque, maybe that would attract more interest. Great work nevertheless.

I’ve seen this artist before, I brought a few of her prints before. Such a huge display with a wide assortment of artworks and sizes. Yet I can’t help but feel that they aren’t doing very well. Maybe it’s just that everyone interested has already brought stuff from her so no need to buy more since no new works. It happens, don’t let that happen to you, gotta keep active and fresh with new works.

Oh yea, I delivered, got ourselves some sweet sweet ICEE, they had flavors that I didn’t know even existed, like orange, cotton candy, raspberry and this green shit here; lemon lime. I got lemon lime mix with cherry. Tastes great but realized later that these two colors mixed eventually produce….brown, so yea, near the bottom it looked like shit. Still tastes good though. Would maybe again, maybe.
It’s nearing the end of the convention and people are beginning to make their slow way out when I saw this 2B cosplay, excellent work. I just recently finished beating the game and got it’s truest ending and I must say, Nier Automata is an excellent video game experience, unlike anything that I’ve ever played in recent memory to say the least. If you have a PS4 and like action games rich with lore and story, Nier Automata is the shit. Once again, excellent 2B cosplay, too bad she had her backpack on still, ah well, still good.
Went on down to EB games for maybe a last minute convention ending give away and in the end got nothing. Dude literally only had like 6 or 7 mini figures of xbox controllers or some shit to give away. Fuck. I didn’t really get anything good free this Fan Expo. Man, if this picture was a Neoclassical hipster piece it would be “Beggars awaiting the prophecy from the false God of deliverance”. Shit.

Back at home we can inspect and review our loot and freebies of the day. The above was given to us already in a compressed tube form so I had no idea what it was a poster of. My guess was assassin creed or something. Turns out to be Mafia III. The poster itself is kinda cool and looks very movie poster like, too bad it’s probably going to be a shit game.
Got these free paper and a blue bag thing from Trios College. Shit. Seriously, this is the kind of stuff that I got for free? Man Fan Expo is getting pretty cheapy. I didn’t’ even manage to get a EB games bag, which I saw some people carrying. Last year everyone had EB games bags, this year it was a lot less. EB normally give out tons of shit, this year is so little it’s like wut why even bother guys. There’s a brock university comic and papercraft, some block shits from mega construx and some pins from I have no idea whatever tv shit. Lame.
Also got some more free paper items. Pokemon, Legend and Serenity posters. Wow, all old shit media. What surprizes me most is the Legend poster, like what the fuck? That shit is so old, from the 80’s starring Tom Cruise in a fantasy troll elf thing, I saw it once, it’s not my thing but for some reason some people love it. Why they produce a new artwork for this I have no idea, maybe 30th anniversary or something? Whatever, paper is good paper however.
So yea, I spent a considerable amount on paper from Sakimichan’s table. Her work is just so good, fuck. From the top are nude prints of dragon crown elf/sorceress and league Ahri/Sona. The bottom are bigger prints of that cat girl from RWBY, DVA cosplaying as Ahri and lastly 2B. I was a little disappointed that she only had the nude prints in regular paper size, 8.5 x 11; I wanted them to be the same as the bottom bigger posters but atlast, that was not the case; still brought it anyways. RWBY is a shit show but the designs are good so I picked up the cat girl, DVA is hot even though I don’t play the game and the clothes design is hot so I picked it up anyways, 2b is hot and I just recently beat her game so yea. Sure sure.
An up close and more focused view of the NSFW prints. I must say that they are excellently well done. The boobs on the dragon’s crown sorceress is a little on the small size however. Should be well, very very big. I guess she forgot about that, ah well still good.
I ended up also buying 3 prints from that artist that sold daikimura, named Kyuriin; she does good shit. Excellent style and composition, very pretty animu of the highest quality. From left is Madoka girls, middle is many Miku composition and honestly on the right I am not sure who it is but I still got it anyways because it’s so good ice shit. I asked her who it was and what it was from, I think she mentioned it and even offered to write the name of the series on the back of the print but I declined; now that I think back I probably should have let her do that; fucking can’t remember where this girl comes from lol.

Decided to try my luck at a blind box for mini trading figures of strike witches. Got pretty good shit, got the new girl that was featured in the strike witches movie, Hattori Shizuka. Good shit. Any of the girls I would have been fine with, kinda funny that I got the most unknown one that wasn’t in any of the tv series but just the movie.
Not mine but these were also purchased, pretty soft little buggers.
And with that is the end of my loot.
Overall I have to be honest, this year’s Fan Expo was a bit of a disappointment compared to previous years both in terms of attractions, cosplay, merchandise, artists and general feel of the convention as a place of cool shit. First things first, the cost, getting in to this shit cost me $50, that’s $50 that could have been spent elsewhere buying toys, games art or some other shit that I want.
The price for Fan Expo has been getting more and more expensive with each passing year, I remember a time when fucking sunday was like only $30 dollars, shit. You would think that paying 50 bucks would get you some guaranteed free shit right? Nope, you aren’t entitled to anything. I wasn’t even given a booklet when I entered the gate and found a random one on a table near the end of the convention, fuck. EB games didn’t give out shit, last year they had bags, books, hats, pins, posters, shirts and other crap to give out; this year I could hardly tell they gave anything.
The companies present at the con was also much less too, last year there was Lego and they built so many displays and shit to attract the kids and stuff, this year they were a no show and got replaced with Megablox shit which is worse. The industry area had nothing to get excited about at all, all they did was promote old shit and promote home releases of wonder women and other shit DC movies, same can be said for the games area. There was a very strong star wars presence but the thing for that was that it wasn’t technically official, it was that fan group that dresses up and makes the model of jabba and the throne shit as a hobby, for fun. You would think that Disney would at least try to put some Last Jedi shit to get people even more hype, but no, nothing to see here. Likewise, you would think that WB would maybe try to promote fucking JUSTICE LEAGUE movie since it’s like 3 months away but NO, you get wonder women shit. Unlike last year, they didnt’ even have a e-sport event going on, so that’s shit, one less thing I would like to see. Fuck.
The merchandise was the usual, overpriced more than ever, even more so for manga; I was looking at a single manga volume for the latest non-non biyori, shit cost $16 what the fuck? Isn’t that like 3-4 dollars more than the standard us cover price? No deals or combos here. Bad. Comics area pretty dead as usual, not helping. The artists alley this year was the same as last year but somehow worst, overall less anime artists bothered to show up and for the new ones that still did, they were shit. Of course the usual super popular good ones kept business running like Sakimichan and Kyuriin but they were equally offset by bad comic artists and artists that try to gimmick their way to sales using memes, popular culture and recent trends to compensate for their bad art. Lots of crafts this year however, more than before, but really?
Cosplay was less, maybe it’s because it’s Sunday but I dunno, not very many people committed to big ass bulky costumes this year and the amount of “pro” cosplayers was significantly less as well. I DID NOT SEE ANY BOATS HERE, HUGE MINUS. Sure there was a few good ones like the 2b, wonder-women and Neo/Morpheus but outside of what I featured here, fairly generic.
I dunno, maybe it’s me but this year’s Fan Expo is a few steps back from where it was a few years ago. The year when Riot Games came to Fan Expo and League was huge was probably the biggest and best this convention has ever been, since then it has progressively gotten worst and worst. I can’t say anything about panels because I don’t go to any but with a baseline price of $50 and mediocre guests and attractions, it’s hard to justify the entry price if you don’t have anything in particular to buy, see or do. With that said, the amount of people going to this thing on Sunday has noticeably decreased, probably due to all of the factors that I mentioned above.
This year’s Fan Expo could have been great with the arrival of Justice League and Star Wars in a couple of months but due to so many factors, they blew it in pretty much every aspect in terms of trying to attract new guests. Fan Expo, get your shit together, you made charging me $50 for entry feel like a waste of money.
