Well then, all in all there is something for everyone to watch from this season of anime. Whatever you are looking for, be it action, comedy or even some more serious shit but there is most notably no gay male idol animes, hmm. There is alot of yuri gay this season for some reason, mainly Citrus taking the stop spot in that regard so yea, good shit this season; lots for me to watch.
Violet Evergarden – This is a extremely high quality show done by kyoto animation about some girl who tries to re-integrate back into normal society after surviving the war. The show starts off with our main girl, Violet Evergarden waking up in a hospital bed, she is injured as such and it is soon revealed that she lost both of her arms in the war that just ended as a solider (time period unspecified, but visually maybe late 1890’s-1910’s?). Despite losing her arms, she is calm and cold still while adjusting to her new MECHANICAL ARMS, like full metal alchemist I guess. Some guy appears saying he was an old friend of her commander, Gilbert and that he sent him to help her get back on her feet and start to live a normal life in peaceful society. This other dude is voiced by Takehito Koyasu, the best and most manliest male voice actor in existence, just a note. After some more small talk and some other shit he convinces her to start working at his company, which is something like a post office but also a place where people can verbally transcribe mail to be sent since most people can’t read or write. Eventually Violet decides after a tour of the workplace that she wants to be a Auto Memory Dolls, basically fancy name for typist who can write letters because she wants to understand the meaning of “I love you” which was the last thing that Gilbert said to her. End first episode. Wow then, looks like Gilbert is totally dead. Besides the fact that story expectations of this show are already defined after the first episode, this is a very high quality show, almost movie level animation and character designs done by gods kyoto animation. Violet is very very pretty and is the calm cool, yet emotionless vessel that is fulfilling of a Rei Ayanami 2.0 type of archetype character or rather Saber 2.0 to some degree. Everything in this show is done well. Nothing else to say about this one except I hope that I will not be disappointed, watch for sure.
Miira no Kaikata – This is a weird but cute show about a boy who gets delivered a mini mummy from his explorer dad in Egypt and it’s alive still. The boy is pretty gay and kind of annoying, typical of his age but the main attraction of this show, the little mummy thing, which can fit in the palm of my hand, is pretty cute. It’s just a holding a small hamster but has real expressions and doesn’t talk. The premise of this show is kinda stupid but it’s anime so yea whatever, there has been way worse show and manga ideas than this. Based on the opening sequence all of his friends also get small monster like creatures as well, such as dragon and imps whatever. The tone is comedy/cute and I think is targeted towards women due to the cute creatures but I dunno, I might watch more of this. The character designs are totally forgettable but tea, we’ll see.
Death March kara Hajimaru Isekai Kyousoukyoku – Oh boy here we go again, another faggot that gets dragged into a fantasy game world show. So it’s like this, we got billy, billy is a super pro ace game developer at a game company. He’s working hard as fuck right? working 24/7, hardly eating, forgoing bathing or showers, the guy is a monster but he gets his shit done before the deadline of the game’s launch so it’s ok, right. Well then, our 30 year old game developer after working like 3 days straight decides to take a nap at his desk. Guy wakes up in game world. You can pretty much derive what happens after that, he levels up unknownling because of a bug in the game and is like lv 300+, super OP broken. He also got younger too, high school appearance so yea, better look my best for my fantasy waifu harem girls. The interesting part about this show is that while the guy is indeed in a fantasy world, he himself can see UI and game interface/menus everywhere and can interact with them, can manage inventory, see npc levels and stats, much like a real game although this world is pretty real to him now. The only conclusion is that this guy is either dead, is in a coma, or is having a really good long dream that can last 12 episodes. Either way you know what to expect for this kind of show, adventure and also getting lots of waifus/fixing the local problems. It’s something in-between Overlord, Konosuba and Sword Art Online, the last one more so because our fag dude especially looks like the main fag from SAO. Animation and char design is decent but forgettable. Probably not watch but we’ll see.
Koi wa Ameagari no You ni – A very ugly sentimental coming of age romance love story/comedy/drama focusing around a high school girl and her affections for her 40-something year old manager at the local family restaurant. Yea, it’s kinda weird and bad. This was definitely authored in maybe the 90’s, maybe even the 80’s based on character designs so it doesn’t really hold up well to today’s anime snobs or aesthetics. The premise itself is pretty scandalous itself, although not unsurprising or unique in anime, it’s just that it’s bad. If the girl and the guy were better looking then maybe, but because they look so old-schooly it’s just cringe. There is a scene where the main girl is like sniffing the managers dirty shirt in the staff lounge in secret and it’s super whhhatttt the fukkkk don’tttt dooo thatttt kind of reaction. Yea, this is shit. Yea, this isn’t really my thing at all.
Marchen Madchen – Another show about someone going to another world to learn magic or something but this time it’s a cute girl who is the main character so it’s ok. The main girl is cute, blue hair, green eyes, shy, loves books and escapes in them, doesn’t have any friends, timid. One day she finds a magical book or something and tries to chase the person who left it there for her. She runs after her and eventually confronts her, they exchange words and the cloaked person says some shit about we the magic and don’t get involved or whatever. Whatever, our girl doesn’t give a shit and still follows her anyways and finds herself in a secret library with a portal or something. She goes in and surprise surprise it’s another world that has magic and shit. Best part, looks like she happened to stumble upon a a magic school, like Harry Potter and such so you know where this is headed. The strangest part of this show is that it’s not immediately known to me if the magic world is in another dimension or just another place on earth that has magic, it’s a bit confusing because after our main girl is done NORMAL HIGHSCHOOL, she goes into the portal to do MAGIC HIGHSCHOOL then after that, GOES HOME TO HER NORMAL HOUSE like almost as if she’s reliving the day again or just commuting to magic school. Yea I dunno, hopefully they get more into explaining it. The show has lots of cute girls but probably the biggest pull of this show hasn’t even been revealed yet in the first episode. I happened to watch the second ep and I kinda get where this show is truly heading: transforming magical girls based of fairy tail stories, like snow white, princess kaguya, rapunzel etc. Our main blue haired maiden herself is revealed to be Cinderella, so yea, that’s a thing I guess. Will probably watch more for sure, the girls are cute and the premise fun enough but not too serious. Good.
Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens – A bullshit show that doesn’t have anything to do with Tonkotsu or Ramen, ultimate fail show of the season. So we have some gays, they are gay assassins. One guy is a cross-dresser the other main guy is just a normal dude who just so happens to be the ultimate assassin that rich assholes hire to kill other assassins. Yea, some shit happens and the story unfolds, whatever. I totally zoned out while watching this show and only retained part of what I saw. Yea, probably for women but the guys are ugly pieces of shit so whatever, no benefit to anybody here. Bad.
Killing Bites – OHHH SHITTTTTTT, do I see best action hype battle fanservice show of the season? Maybe even in recent memory? I’m not sure but I definitely liked what I watched. So we have our dude, he is a totally forgettable character with a forgettable face. For some reason, he is convinced to drive his rapist friends around in a van to pick up girls. He does so and instantly regrets it after they pull some random girl off the street to begin the rape. The girl struggles and screams in the back of the van and he is all like ohh mannn how did I end up in this situation, fukkkk. Then all of sudden some shuffling happens and it’s quiet. The girl killed everyone in the back. Oh shit. She asks our dude to drive to this place or else she will kill him. After the short journey they come to a abandoned junkyard, where the dude is like freaking out and shit. Waiting for them is something like a makeshift arena and some pretty boy is waiting as well. The guy and girl exchange words then suddenly the guy transforms into a half-lion man thing monster and begins fighting with the girl. The girl also then transforms into her “battle” form which is a half-ratel, which wiki tells me is basically a HONEY BADER. FUCK. HONEY BADER DONT GIVE A SHIT. FUCK. So after some hype ass Fist of the North Star heavy metal music come on, they do battle. When you think this shit couldn’t get any better, fucking lion guy does a freeze frame MOVE ANNOUNCEMENT like “LIONS ROAR” or some shit, like in fist of the north star; to counter the ratel girl does her move thing “SLASH” and promptly kills the lion-man. FUCKKKKKK BADDASSS JOKKESSSS. LOOLOLOLOLOL. So yea, I’m totally watching this show. Ratel girl, a short white haired girl named hitomi is the typical tough hard as nails girl hooligan but gets cute occasionally and is pretty good, has medium boobs. I like how they make the male guy transformation like 80% furry level shit, with lion head, while girls only receive like 40% furry level, only their arms, legs and ears become animal-like, author knows what’s up. Shit’s good. It should be noted that this show has nudity, in the first episode I saw boobs and nipples from a porcupine girl. Wow. Of course there is some story here involving gambling corporations and underground family clans but yea, that’s not important. Shit’s good, watch for sure.
Takunomi – A nice short mini show about a bunch of girls that share an apartment in Tokyo and how they enjoy life after work/life drinking/eating shit. Yea, this is a good show, right up my alley in terms of content and tone. It’s purely a slice of life comedy with eating/drinking as it’s central focus, particularly beer. The main blue hair girl is an office worker that just moved in with her roommates as is the “main” character I suppose, while the 3 other range from being retail fashion clerk, a wedding planner and a college student, the last one being the blue haired girl’s sister apparently. The character designs are nice and crisp and really remind me of another show but I can’t put my finger on it, maybe idol master? Animation is good too. Good shit, watch for sure.
Darling in the FranXX – Alright then, this is an original collaboration project between Trigger and A1 Pictures, two different anime studios with their own thing and it clearly shows it for better or worse. Mech action stories about youth and growing up are tough shit, if you don’t do it right, you’ll more often than not get a horrible show with an even more horrible main character faggot. This show teeters the fine line between the main guy being such a useless faggot and the main girl being so good, cool and pro. So in some future world or alternate future history on some planet humans are getting attacked by giant monster things, visually look similar to Kancolle abyssals monsters but much much bigger. To fight them off on this remote and desolate colony planet, they need to use giant mech things called FranXX since yea, giant mech vs monster has to be a thing. In order to pilot one two people must be inside one and be partners and “Linked” to each other in mind and soul, or at least that’s what they say. Think Pacific Rim, pretty much the same concept, except totally not gay because so far it looks like they have to be heterosexual pairings, girl and boy for it to work but who knows, maybe that will change later on. Anyways some shit happens and our main boy fails and his partner is expelled from the school/planet. Without a partner, our boy is useless and in despair. Some shit happens and he meets another strange girl that later apparently is reveals to have some blood of the monsters that they are fighting in her veins, kinda like a oni demon with small horns. More shit happens and the school/city/colony is attacked by a monster. Our main boy and strange girl end up having to fight it out of desperation and they unite in the thing and win. Boy doesn’t remember anything after but basically the girl gave him a good kiss and he “got it” and he could pilot it. Ok then. So basically at the heart of this show is relationships and mental mind binding shit, like Evangelion but for the modern age. Ha. Well, I don’t know if I will follow all the way though with this show but we’ll see. The concept is interesting, although reused and the designs are a mixed bag, really mixed bag. You can really tell that all the girl characters were designed by A1 and all the guys by Trigger, they just have their own respective studios “look” and style. The battle style? Pretty much all Trigger’s doing while A1 handles relationships and close male/female body animation scenes. Not bad, but I dunno.
Beatless – I’ve seen the designs, or at least the main girl’s design in this anime for quite some time now. A few years back they released a figure of the main girl, the name escapes me but it looks pretty cool, kinda tight fitting plug suit fare with some magical artifact that looks like giant blocks or something. Yea. That’s all that I remember of this show/franchise/novel series and for the most part that’s how it will stay regardless of the fact that I watched anime of it. So we have a world where it’s like android all around and shit right, and they look human and behave human for the most part, doing all of humanities shit jobs and doing servant duties. Everyone treats them like shit because, well they are machines designed to serve I guess but some people treat them as if they are real people, such as our boy, Satoshi, he’s one of these people too. Satoshi or whatever his name is can’t understand why people can be mean/treat androids like property as his friends and shit make fun of him because he does so. Well then, some shit happens and all of a sudden all robot and mechanized stuff goes crazy and shit is blowing stuff off, going all aggro and shit. Our boy is here, standing on the streets and is about to get attacked by a nice old women android he just spoke with minutes ago, when some random beautiful girl in a plugsuit comes in and rescues him and blows up the out of control android with her big magical tablet rock funnel thing gun, yea hard to describe it and tells him to form a contract with her so she can protect him and shit. Boy does so as they make way back to his house and such to meet his little sister or whatever, where his new robot girlfriend promptly cooks up a meal for them. End episode pretty much. Yea, I dunno about this one, it’s pretty much what you get if you combine concepts and themes of fate stay night, blade runner and maybe a bit of some magical girl show. The main girl is notably a saber, business and serious up front and a bit cuter and chill in non-battle times with obvious robot mono-personality, which is fine. The characters designs are good but not outstanding, forgetable with the exception of main girl. Concept is ok but done many times before in varying degrees. Not bad, but not really for me.
Dagashi Kashi S2 – Alright then, so we get a sequel to a great show from a few years back, Dagashi Kashi but one of the problems however is that it’s not going to be a full length show, shit’s only going to be like 13 minutes, so half the time as a mini show. Next problem is that a different studio is handling this production instead of the original one. Oh noes. Oh yea, the character designs are changing a bit, oh yea, not much, only for the main girl, Hotaru’s design is taking a step back and being simplified to match more like the original manga, which pretty much translate into: Yea, she’s going to look shitter now. FUCK. And yes, Hotaru does look like shit compared to her original design in the first season. Her design was so smooth, round, and detailed in the first series, this time she just looks cut up and sharper, less refined overall. Sure you could say that she looks more similar to Saya now, but if that’s the case, Saya was always shit compared to Hotaru. Mannnnnn. Ah-well at least the show still tells me nice stories and facts of Japanese candy and snacks which is cool although since the show is so short, feels a bit rushed, but when you think about it, maybe it’s better that way. All of the voice actors return but honestly it doesn’t feel that way, Hotaru is still being voiced by Ayana Taketatsu, which was great in the first series but this time it’s kinda bad, doesn’t even feel like the same character; maybe she forgot how to do her voice/personality for this show. I dunno, maybe it’s just me, maybe I’m right and everyone just fucked up this one. Designs are crappier, but mini show so yea, whatever. Will still watch for sure anyways.
Hakumei to Mikochi – This is a cute ass chill as fuck show about 2 small little fairy/elf/girls that have elf ears living in the forest and just doing their shit going to miniatures town and shit, living. Slice of life to the max with a good dose of inspiration in terms of setting from Mushishi and a bit of Made in Abyss, very fantasy like with lots of green and magical shit but still keeping it real. Hmm. The size of our two elf/fairy girls is about the same size as a Nenderoid, so pretty small since in the episode they are seen as eating a peanut and they are holding that shit with two hands and their relative size to other things like animals, cats, bugs and other critters. They are not alone in this world, they often go into town where a whole other bunch of their race mixed in with other magical creatures live peacefully, this is a small town. There is at no point so far that I can tell where “normal” sized humans live and hopefully it stays that way, the last thing I want in this shit is reverse Attack on Titan. Anyways, the show is very chill and the two girls are cool too, calming and whimsical tone. The story flow is episodic in nature which works and the designs are very interesting, very painterly like with unconnected lines. Oh yea, everyone in this show is kinda round and squishy looking, hey they are like small fairy/elf things so I guess it makes sense. Good shit, watch more for sure.
Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan – Holy FUCK what the FUCK is this shit? I did not expect to see what essentially is fate stay night, slice of life cooking/eating edition. That is what this show is about, you get to see Saber, Rin and friends chill out and eat food and enjoy it cooked by #1 bastard protagonist Emiya Shirou, holy fuck seriously? Why did they do this? The only thing I can think of is that Type Moon knows what’s up. Recently there was been alot of food shows and they are all hits in my opinion, so to cater to my tastes of ace anime, they have produced this show for me especially, saying “hey, I know your damn tired as fuck of Saber #1354 and friends doing battle, but you know what, we are too, so here’s this slice of life cooking show with Saber eating food and enjoying it. Oh yea, everyone is chill too, no war here, no holy grail, the food is the holy grail so yea, buy our shit again.” Damn it. They Got me. Looks like i’m going to have to watch this show I guess. It’s a mini show so that’s fine, it wouldn’t make sense otherwise. The style and designs of this show compared to what ufotable has been doing for their serious Fate productions is pretty crude and shit simple but I suppose that’s fine considering the content. It’s funny really since ufotable is still the studio behind this thing, I guess they are like me, damn tired of doing serious saber, just wanna chill sometimes rite man? Good shit i guess, will watch.
Well then, looks like that’s the end of the Winter 2018 season wrap up reviews. Overall this is a great season for anime, at least for me since there is no stupid bullshit mecha and a huge number of slice of life chill take it easy comedy funny moe action shows. YAS. I could easily watch 13-15 of these shows listed in the past 3 posts and I would have no complaints or regrets, all shit is pretty good, nothing particularly horribly bad. No male idol fags and very little teen angst, although still present in Darling in the FranXX. Fantasy genre of going into another world is still as strong as ever and I’m getting tired of it but yea, it’s more like I’m more picky now since shit, shit’s too many. Lots of good show to watch.
Watch for sure: 3-gatsu no Lion, Ramen Daisuki Koizumi-san, Yuru Camp, Toji no Miko, Slow Start, Ryuuou no Oshigoto!, Kaijuu Girls S2, Overlord II, Violet Evergarden, Marchen Madchen, Killing Bites, Takunomi, Pop Team Epic, Hakumei to Mikochi, Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan
On the fence: Mitsuboshi Colors, Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card, Gakuen Babysitters, Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san, Darling in the FranXX
Good shittttt.
