Anime Review Spring Season

Spring Anime 2018 Part III

Last post to wrap of the bulk of this season’s anime offering. Overall good shit around here, long post because whatever but yea.

Boku no Hero Academia – And here we are again with Heroes season 3, oh boy this shit just keeps on coming, not that I have much to complain about, show has been consistently good and hopefully we will get somewhere storywise this time. Classic shonen battle show goodness, watch for sure.

Omae wa Mada Gunma wo Shiranai – A pretty jokes mini show about a guy going back to his hometown in Gunma prefecture known for farming, old people and in general small time rural living. The ending sequence features some girl with green hair which I am assuming he will meet eventually and show him the ropes again what small time living is all about. Also notable is that gunma is where initial d takes place or at least that’s where Takumi lives so I will be disappointed if they somehow don’t do some jokes or homage to initial d throughout the course of the show. Will watch more.

Persona 5 The Animation – Well then, we get a Persona 5 anime just about a year or so after the game was released worldwide which if you think about it, is really incredible. Having been a spectator to the game I have a pretty good idea of what goes on in the show and so far shit has been spot on accurate. The animation and style of the show is very good, crisp lines, fluid animation and detailed textures and backgrounds, very true to the game, if not a complete copy of the game. They even use all of the same graphic design aesthetics from the game as well as the soundtrack and music and no doubt all of the original Japanese voice acting cast. I’m too lazy to go in-depth about the story of the show/game so it’s the same kinda of fare, good shit. If you haven’t’ played Persona 5 then it’s worth watching to see’s what’s all the hype. If you have played the game, then it’s just more bonus. Good shit.

Nil Admirari no Tenbin – Teito Genwaku Kitan – A show for women about a women who through various circumstances is placed into a situation where she is forced to live with a collection of mysterious but beautiful men which all have a secret or power and her reluctance to accept her own power because of the trauma of her past but no doubt through the course of the story will come to understand her power and come of love all of the men that she is assigned to live with in her own unique harem. Yea, it’s one of those shows. This time the setting is around the 1920-30’s I think and involves magical cursed books or tomes or whatever. Some shit get’s cursed and our main girl’s brother gets wrecked or something, some special police or agency comes around and investigates, realizes that she had power or something and invites her to live with the crew because yea, anime. She doesn’t want to but comes to terms with it and at the end of the episode she does. This show is shit and forgettable, the guys aren’t that great and the girl is weak. Animation and design kinda fuzzy haze and not crisp. Bad.

Caligula – A very interesting show that tries to blend a lot of genres together like psychology, philosophy, science fiction and other world bending idol shit or whatever. Yea it’s kinda hard to describe but from what I saw I think it’s alright, interesting concept. So we have our main guy, he is a bit holier than thou and likes to read philosophy and shit but other than that he lives a relatively normal life. He looks ok, kinda cool hair and is not a wuss, at least so far. One day they have an school ceremony to start the new school year and for some reason this idol girl’s music which he likes starts playing in the auditorium and for some reason it triggers something in him and several other students. Some students appear to transform into some shadow creatures and attack other students while others just take it. Of course our boy is freaked out and runs away out of school with a group of other school student monsters showing up to chase him as well. He runs and runs but then is cornered, some other dude with white black hair shows up and saves him, transforms into some weapons or whatever and shoots the monsters. Doesn’t really explain much shit but yea, they talk with the idol girl’s music playing. So yea end episode. From the first episode I don’t really know what’s going on but my initial guess is that the world is not real, they are living in a dream/virtual world and they don’t even know it, kinda like the matrix and our boy and others finally get “WOKE” to the lie of their reality and can’t live normally anymore. Or something like that. Either way this show is interesting enough for me to continue, who knows where it will go with this psychology and philosophy theme but we’ll see.

Cutie Honey Universe – An continuation of sorts of an old ass anime franchise that should probably should have stayed dead. This shit was in the 80’s and that is not to say that shit from the 80’s is back, nope I love the 80’s but this one really shows it’s age in all the worst ways in character design, tone and pacing. So we have Cutie Honey, some girl that can transform into varying versions of herself with different appearances and abilities that fights bad guys and crime and shit. It’s essentially a magical girl show but really ugly by today’s standards. Yea I technically shouldn’t have even watched this since it’s s sequel but whatever, it’s shit regardless.

Fumikiri Jikan – A quick ass mini show about a couple of girls talking about shit while they wait for a train to pass on their way to school. It’s about youth, it’s about love, it’s about whatever. I have no idea what this shit is really about so i’ll continue to watch more. In this episode two girls are just talking and one ends up basically confessing that she is gay and loves her friend, all this while waiting for a train to pass. It’s supposed to be funny and it moderately is but I don’t know if it’s going to be episodic or the same two girls will be do the same thing everyday, wait by the train stop and talk shit. Watch more probably.

Golden Kamuy – This is a pretty good adventure, action, journey show that takes place in the early 1900’s when japan was just finished with the Russo-Japanese war and shit’s going on in snowy Hokkadio in the north. So we have a guy, I can’t remember his name but let’s just call him bill, he used to be in the army but now is discharged because he punched an officer or something. In any regard, Bill was super pro solider, known as the Devil’s bitch or whatever something along those lines with the reputation that he couldn’t be killed. Cool cool, nice, so anyways he is just chilling in the north with some old guy he found in the forest, old man tells him some story about some hidden gold that was stolen from the native Ainu people and that the person that did it wrote the location on the bodies of prisoners or some shit. Bill doesn’t believe him but whatever, the old man tries to kill him but gets away scared. Bill doesn’t give a shit and continues on his way, he later finds the body of the old man and sees that he has a map like tattoo all over his body, shit man looks like the treasure is real and he was one of the prisoners. Old man was killed by a bear so he has to hurry but the bear comes up anyways and attacks him, he puts up a good fight but is ultimately saved by a young Ainu girl with a bow and arrow and shit. She helps him and he tells her the story of the gold. She believes him and they are off on a journey to find lost gold. This show from my understanding is based off a manga and yea, it’s pretty good so far, the main guy is not a wuss, competent manly and the girl is cool/cute I guess. I except some jojo level faces from this show and mystery/drama but we’ll see, I am dubbing this show Winter Gold. Good shit watch more for sure.

Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori – A slice of life anime targeted towards women that features a collection of beautiful men working at a restaurant and doing stuff that is supposed to be cute and shit. I don’t know about this show, it’s obviously not for me but even then it feels off. There is no focus on any particular guy, just a bunch of dudes that I have no idea who is the main guy. The first episode has some women who works as an event planner who just wants to chill and drink some shit while she works but by the end of the episode she ends up having a full delicious meal. Yea, that’s fine and all but the problem here is that her focus is sporadic, like they go focus on her for like 3 minutes then all of a sudden they focus on one of the other dudes and their stupid hi-jinks, then some other customers, then to another guy, other customers then back to the primary women focus? Kinda bad flow man, even for a women show. The food didn’t even look good. Guys look like shit forgetable, women show boring and poor pacing, forgetable and unclear premise, slice of life? comedy? chill dunno. Nope.

Butlers – Chitose Momotose Monogatari – Another show for women about some magical butlers from another dimension trying to settle the score of a grudge or incident that happened in their own world/dimension. Yea, something like that. I honestly don’t remember much from this show other than that the main guy had black hair and was for some reason the school countil preisdent at school and all the girls loved him and was admired by the dudes. Something something about his sister going missing and holding a grudge to get revenge against another butler that was supposed to protect his sister which just so happened to be transported to our world after the incident. Other white haired butler is obviously at school and their is battle/drama or whatever. Yea, not for me, boring ass stupid concept and shit character designs/animation, not even good for women. Bad.

Steins Gate 0 – Alright then, after like about almost 8 years since the first steins gate anime happened we get something of a sequel/alternate route story continuation of from what I understand it, a route where the main girl Kurisu died but everyone else is alive and our main scientist man is ruined with ptsd from time travel mind melding thingy and abandons his mad scientist persona, becoming a very very sad and depressed normal man wanting to forget everything. Ok then. I honestly haven’t read much into this work and I don’t really intend to but I enjoyed the first steins gate pretty thoroughly, it had a great story, concept, execution and good looking characters with a great voice cast. Hopefully this will be just as good. Just to recap what I just said, this story takes place in a timeline where our main guy failed to save Kurisu from being killed and shit is still going on I suppose. The majority of the first episode is our main guy just trying to reconnect with his friends he hasn’t seen in awhile and setting the tone/setting of the story. Main guy has to do some help doing a scientist convention and some short girl comes in and helps translate or something, with mild funny, no doubt will be part of the show more later on. So our guy is watching the lecture and he get’s mildly triggered because one of the speakers talks about Kurisu and her science ideas about time mind travel or something, but then reveals that with new research and technology he is able to bring her back alive or something, at least her consciousness/her mind through AI or something and he is like hopeful or whatever. End episode. Yea, hopefully this will bear fruit but we’ll see, watch more.

Dorei-ku The Animation – Kind of a weird show that focuses on a variety of characters but with a main girl doing some shit involving games and gambling involving some device you put into your mouth/teeth and another person which depending on the outcome of the game, the loser becomes a slave to the winner and becomes totally submissive to their commands and whims. The direct full translation of this original work is something like “Slave District: 23 Slaves and Me” from my initial search on wiki and has been around for awhile, spawning a live action movie with the manga continuing on as a sequel of sorts. The show starts off with some mixer party with some girls and dudes playing drinking games and some shit, one dude is all like, yea I dare you to have sex with me and the girl is all like, ok, with the amazement to all her friends. Ok then, I kinda see where this is going now. Show then focuses on some other girl, the main girl and she’s just chilling or whatever with her friend, friend got dumped by some dude for another guy, apparently she made her boyfriend gay or something but yea. Main girl is all like, really now? I would like to meet your ex-boyfriend and his new man. For some reason her friend agrees and they meet. They talk about some shit and say something about another table at the restaurant, asks her what their relationship is. Main girl is like, she is on a date but the dude is not what she was expecting,  way too old and creepy and wants to get out quick. Alleged ex-boyfriend of her friend is like, yes, that’s correct, you see it too huh? Ok then, the show then gets a bit weird and jumps to backstory of the other table they were talking about from the point of view of the girl who wants to leave. Basically after some shit, the dude ends up raping her and yea, she wants to get revenge later. The next day she goes to a pachinko parlor and finds her rapist, an older man and bets him that if he has more balls at the end of their panchinko session he can have with with her again or something, obviously dude says ok for some reason. But to do this she tells him he has to put on some brace like device in their mouth to make it more exciting. He agrees, does so. She ends up winning through underhanded means and dude becomes her slave, can’t resist because of the device in his mouth. Beats him up and shit etc you get the idea. Now then, focus back to main girl and alleged gay dude, which apparently tells her that he is not gay or something and wants to be her partner in case that if he becomes a slave she would try to fight to release him from becoming a slave? Did I get that right? Yea well, it’s all very confusing and shit but you get the idea of the show in general. The character designs are completely forgettable but the story and concept is pretty interesting so far. May watch more and see how it goes. Not bad.

Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii – This is a great show. This show is about a girl and a guy, they are both co-workers at a company, the girl is a new hire. The guy has been there for awhile. They haven’t seen each other for a long time, maybe since middle school. They both know each other are otaku and are friends but one day dude is like, you know what girl? Do you wanna try dating? Girl is like, hmmmm i dunno, as long as you help me sell my book at comiket and help me get limited edition goods and help me level up in games then ok, sure. Guy is like, alright, that’s cool, let’s try it. lololol. Well, that’s basically a super ghetto version of what I saw in this episode, which is alot more entertaining that how I summed it up above. In essence this is an otaku dating slice of life comedy where the main girl tries so hard to be “normal” and keep her secret from the rest of her new co-workers while on the other hand the old friend she is dating at work, totally doesn’t give a shit and goes all out, playing games and shit during lunch breaks and the like. I wouldn’t really call this a romance show because I would think the drama is very light if any at all, more comedy than anything. At first I thought this was going to be another typical girl type show because the first 5 minutes or so were so bait and cliche with the girl getting up and getting ready, but then you see her anime keychain and when she gets on the train she greets the anime poster of real anime “how to raise a boring girlfriend”, then you know something is up. Main girl has pink hair and is a doujin artist/typical yaoi fangirl while other characters include the main guy, who is primarily a gaming otaku, other female co-worker who is a cosplayer and friend of main dude who I am not sure but could just be general all-rounder. The character designs of this show is pretty good, the girls look OK, while the two guys are pretty handsome, which means this shit was probably authored by a women but that’s cool and makes sense. This is a great show. Good concept, good pacing and lots of entertaining otaku nerd tropes to relate to, watch for sure.

Isekai Izakaya – Koto Aitheria no Izakaya Nobu – This shit is basically Sunrises ghetto attempt at “restaurant to another world” except much more shittier and is kinda a mini show where there is a restaurant in a fantasy magical land that is connected to the regular human our world where people eat food and shit. The concept is almost exactly the same except shitter art and animation, execution, characters and flow compared to last year’s similar show. I dunno, I like food shows that’s for sure but I don’t know if this holds up to my standards. This episode is basically 2 attack on titan wannabe soldiers eating hotpot and talking about potatoes and shit. One thing that is cool however is that they have a ending segment with live action chef talking about food and cooking stuff like you just saw, which is a nice touch but looses me in immersion points since my animu world has been shattered with the real. Maybe watch more, not sure.

Full Metal Panic! Invisible Victory – After many years and shit of running, we have another Full Metal Panic! anime series. Holy shit this series has been going on for a long time. I remember watching this shit in HIGH SCHOOL and I remember TESSA the girl captain with white hair being the best girl. Honestly I totally can’t remember much of what this series was all about. I remember watching a series called the Second Raid a number of years ago that was done by Kyoto animation and it having pro animation and naked boobs in it for a couple of Chinese girls which ended up dead anyways so yea, I have no idea that’s the objection of this show anymore other than main guy to protect blue haired girl with mech because she has special mental smart powers or something, maybe esper? Can’t remember shit.  TESSA was esper too I think, she was special. Yea I dunno. Maybe I will watch this, but we’ll see, I think it’s one of those shows where if the reception is really good I might take a look but as it stands probably not, I really don’t remember much at all what happened earlier in this story or franchise. Even in this episode I’m not really sure what’s happening other than shit is going down. I can’t say for animation quality, at times it looks 3d but maybe it’s just really smooth with clean lines and color, not sure, probably not. We’ll see, looks ok but dunno.

Updated 2018/04/29:

Mahou Shoujo Ore – For one reason or another I initially missed reviewing this show because it had the name Mahou Shoujo in it and I probably mistaken it for being Mahou Shoujo Site, which is a totally different show altogether but yea now I see the error of my ways. Anyways this is a great funny dumb show about two cute girls who become magical girls but when they transform they become handsome buff ass swole bishonen men with still full on magical girl frilly clothing in pink and blue. lolol jokes. Their magical creature thing is an old Yakuza man and gives them weapons like a gun that has unlimited bullets, a bat with nails, collection of knives. Of course the main girl doesn’t want those because they are not very magical girl like and ops for a suitable magical staff/wand but doesn’t really do anything or have powers, she has to beat up enemies with blunt force. lol. The enemies in this show so far as like cute demon things which look like raccoons or squirrels but become funny like swole bipedal dudes. lol. The two main girls are actually idols but are shit ones with no fans while the brother for the second girl is a successful male idol in with another guy. The show so far consists of the brother idol which is kinda dumb and doesn’t really talk in words get into trouble with demons and our buff ass swole magical girls have to save him. Lest to say the main pink girl likes the brother and her partner, the blue girl is totally gay for the pink girl. lolol. The girls themselves when not manly transformed are pretty cute actually, with the blue girl even having big boobs and such and when they are transformed, they look funny bishonen buff men appropriately. This is a pretty jokes show comedy parody so I will watch this for sure. Great concept, decent animation, good character designs and flow, funny dumb magical girl shit parody. Good shit.

Overall this season is fairly balanced with new shows and some older shows still ongoing like Darling in the Franz and Toji no Miko which I am slowly getting though with low priority mixed in with a decent sampling of moe slice of life and action. I would have liked to see more moe cute shows but that’s ok, the winner this season for that is already probably Comic Girls, most fun horse girls and most manly shit is Fist of the Blue Sky with comedy and drama everywhere for Steins gate and other edgelord shows that I might watch like magical website girls and teeth slave gambling to boot with more espers and hero powers everywhere. Not Bad even for space boys with Legend of the Galactic Bishonen deserving of some credit as well.

Probably watch for sure: Uchuu Senkan Tiramisu, Uma Musume – Pretty Derby, Souten no Ken Re-Genesis, Gegege no Kitarou (2018), Gundam Build Divers, Comic Girls, Akkun to Kanojo, Mahou Shoujo Site, Hinamatsuri, Toji no Miko, Darling in the FranXX, Boku no Hero Academia, Omae wa Mada Gunma wo Shiranai, Golden Kamuy, Steins Gate 0, Fumikiri Jikan, Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii

On the fence: Legend of the Galactic Heroes – Die Neue These, Gurazeni, Persona 5 The Animation, Caligula, Dorei-ku The Animation, Full Metal Panic! Invisible Victory
