Anime Review Summer Season

Summer Anime 2020 Overview

So, this is Summer Anime 2020 season huh, coming in after a few weeks all I have to say is that the sheer volume of shows have decreased dramatically. Summer is usually a slower time for anime than most but because of COVID I can only imagine that it’s effected productions even more. Alot of shows were effected in the past season and had to be postponed indefinitely, alot of those shows still didn’t appear this season which makes me wonder when they will air, in the Fall, next year? Who knows. All I can say is that this season doesn’t have a lot of stuff worth watching to be honest, not even a new Isekai show which is actually quite amazing; probably because no show even wants to bother fighting against Re Zero S2. A few shows are worth watching if your craving for something new but overall, not a whole lot worth taking a note of, even with my tastes for slice of life, chill comedy.

Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha – This is a good edge-lord show about quite literally a reincarnated demon lord from 2000 years ago who made a promise with the “hero” of back in the day to let him be killed by the hero in exchange for the peace in the realm, but will reincarnate 2000 years later. Demon lord boi is born 2000 years later to a happy family and grows to a young adult/teenager within a month and retains all of his memories and power when he was alive 2000 years ago, more or less looking the same physically as well. Turns out the place where his castle was is now a demonic magic school founded on the ancient demon lord, the first headmaster, which apparently to his surprise is not him nor is he mentioned at all in the histories but some other name. This show in essence is a magic school show about him trying to get to the bottom of this absence from history while completely ruining everyone along the way with his vastly superior power and knowledge of magic and the arts. Did I mention that there are 2 very cute girl heroine classmates along the way? Like really good, their design is very good and the school clothes in general both male and female uniforms are really cool/cute. Very shiny and sparkly girls. The animation and character designs in general is good and the pacing very very quick, almost to the point where huge chunks of material is probably being omitted from the source material, which is of course a light novel. From what I read, the show is so fast that as of writing this review I’ve gotten up to episode 4 and it seems to me that could be considered an entire 12-13 episode season in itself but compressed into 4 episodes. lol. This show gets it, the main character is OP and not a wussy or pussy boy, he is a demon lord reincarnate and aided by two very cute shiny and sparkly girls. I’d watch just purely because the girls are so pretty; it’s a bit similar to Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records in many regards, but much less comedy and more edge and much prettier girls. Will watch for sure.

Lapis ReLiGHTs – Some shit show that is probably a mobile game and or tie in to a mobile game that is a combination of fantasy magic school and idols, magic idols i suppose that perform. It’s things that have been seen before and this one is mediocre all the way. Completely forgettable character designs, boring plot, weak world building or lead in to anything greater other than the fact that the school is divided into classes like gold, silver and bronze and shit whatever. Same archetypes associated with character designs but nothing special, they are not ugly or low effort, just generic and nothing special. Weak, pass.

Dokyuu Hentai HxEros – Joke ass bullshit show where the planet has been invaded or at least is trying to be invaded by aliens except they are trying to zap the power of drive of humans via sucking up their sexual energy thus turning them into lifeless drone slaves. Or some shit like that. All you need to know about this show is that the main character is Emiya Shirou and he is a faggot. He has a main orange girl but when they were kids one of the aliens, which by the way are all insect-hybrid humanoid women monsters attacked and sucked some of Emiya’s girl’s sexual drive and she was never the same. Basically she was kinda horny but not any more back in the day. Fast forward to like highschool and their relationship is shit because Emiya’s girl basically turned into a Tsundere so yea. Some shit happens and it turns out Emiya is part of some power rangers like crew HxEros which enables him to transform into a half naked power ranger/wrestler and get strong to fight the aliens, the only catch is that he has to feel sexually aroused to transform and get powers losing all their clothes when they are finished, which consequently is not very hard cause he is horny most of the time, a la Avengers Hulk. So yea, his childhood girl friend with orange friend gets “awakened” again and get shares in the power of basically the same shit and gets naked as she punches and something with Emiya. There is a bunch of other side girls in the power rangers crew which I suppose are supposed to be cute/hot but no doubt the orange girl is the main girl. Overall a stupid ass bullshit show which is bad at most areas. The main girl is not that hot, but is totally average, and Emiya is just being Emiya, the worst. Shit animation, story, premise. Only saving grace is the opening because it’s so dumb and looks like 90’s anime opening. Shit.

The God of High School – Shit ass korean bullshit. For some reason korean source material like to have God in their title, which I suppose is meant to hype you up to something epic and grand, but the end result is that this show is just laughable in what it thinks/tries to be. Basically this is just a school tournament fighting show where fighters are like popular celebrities and shit aiming for the top. They make no attempt to hide that this shit is korean and takes place is Seoul and all the names and places are korean sounding in nature. The main character does Taekwondo, nuff said. The show tries to be funny and put in comical elements and uses funny exorted faces to convey this but it’s so forced and not funny it’s hard not to cringe. Outside the shitty attempts at comic relief, all the characters are ugly and have like really long pointy noses with grease shine, which I think is ugly. Main guy generic, main girl generic, cool guy generic, nothing here to see. Shit show.

Umayon – Similar to Cinderalla Girls, this is a mini show about Uma Musume, the horse girl racing show that aired like a year or so ago except in chibi form highlighting slice of life bits and the likes. The show is ok but honestly i forgot most of the characters because there were so many. Nice and cute but not sure if i’ll continue this. Not many mini shows these days, I guess COVID has effected even these. Ahwell.

Deca-Dence – This show could potentially be amazing or a terrible failure beyond disappointment much in the same vein as Kado and Babylon in terms of original anime productions. The show starts off with a girl living in a world that is a bit like Attack on Titans with huge monsters that need to be killed and humanity has reached a point where they are struggling for survival. Humans now live in moving fortresses the size of cities in a dessert mad max like wasteland and need to fight the monsters called Gadoll to extract some kind of fuel from them which powers their weapons and vehicles. The main girl was saved when she was young and lost an arm but is determined to become a Gear, a warrior-hunter on the deca-dence, one of the moving fortress cities one day. Fast forward and she is now a teenager and is now working on the deca-dence, but not as a warrior Gear but a cleaner of the fortress as is a requirement for all new recruits for like 3-5 years until they are assigned training to become a Gear warrior. The main girl is cheerful and optimistic and of course she meets a few characters like a mentor like teacher and such who used to be a Gear but went back to becoming a cleaner for mysterious reasons, no doubt being super op. The world is interesting and a good attempt at world building is made to explain how everything and the system works. The character designs are decent and the premise interesting….but…having said all that; it could all be nothing and pointless. Having watched episode 2, without giving away too many spoilers, let’s just say this show is 100% not what it makes it seem it’s out to be but rather, a far more ambitious and creative experiment which shares more in common with the Matrix than Mad-Max. Not bad, we’ll see how far I can get with this before it potentially gets ruinous and shitty.

Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai! – A relatively hyped and high profile slice of life, romantic gag comedy featuring the famed short but very large chested Uzaki-chan with the infamous “Sugoi Dekai” t shirt of online meme fame. Yes, I have seen people/art and jokes about this “Sugoi Dekai” shirt for a few years now and always wondered where did this come from, now I know. Being a manga of the same name, it is basically what you think it is, it’s the story of a loner university guy who doesn’t have many friends and when his old childhood friend Uzaki gets into the same university a year later, she is kinda shocked at how unfriendly and unsocial-able her senpai is. So being the bright optimistic yet a bit dumb girl that she is, always tries to hang around him and chill out doing shit, not realizing that everything that she does and says embarrasses our main boy in the pubic because it makes it sound like they are a couple, when in his mind, they are not, but in reality, Uzaki is basically already his wife, he just doesn’t know it or accepts it yet. Uzaki knows what up, it’s just her senpai who doesn’t understand yet. It’s that kind of show where you can either dislike it or be mildly amused, nothing extreme to both ends of hate or love. The design of Uzaki is a bit confusing, because her hair is so short, she looks like a short boy with really big boobs, which I think that’s kind of the point for senpai, Uzaki kinda acts like a tomboy but he’s just a normal cute girl beneath that? I think? There are cuts and flashbacks in highschool days where she had longer hair and more girlish clothes but yea, I think that’s part of the point of this show maybe? The bulk of the show’s comedy comes from putting our main boi and Uzaki in awkward situations usually involving the size of her boobs or doing things that can easily be interrupted as dating/couple life and our main boy getting embarrassed about the situation. Not bad, but not great, mild comedy. Decent character designs but I admit I never found myself saying “wow, Uzaki is hot/cute”, but rather “wow, Uzaki is dumb, but her boobs are nice”. Yea, that kind of show. Will watch because I have to know.

Peter Grill to Kenja no Jikan – This is basically a slightly watered down yuusha version of Ishuzoku Reviewers except our main hero is Emiya Shirou from Fate Stay Night Visual Novel Edition and is actually OP and basically has sex with a bunch of hot monster girls/other fantasy themed girls because he can’t control himself and the monster/demon girls are so good at seducing him even though he already has a girlfriend which is kinda like a nun-holy girl which he hasn’t had sex with because of course he hasn’t but feels so bad after he has sex with everything around him that is female except his girlfriend. Lol what. For fanservice shows like this there is only 2 factors that matter, are the girls hot/cute and is there censorship. The girls that were in the first episode, a pair of kinda pinkish-skinned succubus onis were pretty good I guess, animation is kinda weak and mediocre at best, there is censorship and light streaks, not even ones worth using to be honest. This show tries to be more than fan service and that’s it’s downfall, the fact that they put in a little more effort at world building and story is this show’s greatest weakness as it detracts from what’s most important, the girls. While the premise is interesting, the main boy, Peter is annoying despite basically being the anti-harem protag, he gets the sex with lots of different girls, but the didn’t/nor want it in the first place and feels bad about basically cheating on his girlfriend. Fuukk lol. Highly unlikely to watch more but we’ll see, there’s better shows that do this kind of thing.

Kanojo, Okarishimasu – This show is basically called “Rent a Girlfriend” so yea, you kinda get where we are going with this show already. Our main boy is in university, he had his first girlfriend and after only a month she dumped him. Feeling sad and angry at women in general for in his mind all being bitches and hoes, he looks up online this service to rent a girlfriend and books an appointment with a girl to go out on a date with him with the sole purpose of giving her a low rating in the app once the date is over. Of course the girl that shows up is perfect and does all the things you would except from a “perfect” girlfriend, all the while our main boy is getting angry and shit saying she is so fake and etc, how could she do this kind of job and whatnot. Some shit happens during the date and he is forced to go to the hospital to visit his grandma cause she might die, he reluctantly brings the rent a girlfriend along, after he berates her for being fake and she puts up a good argument and tells him off, showing to him the first time her real personality, the opposite of the timid, mild and submissive personality she performed; her true self being more fiery, outspoken and raw in nature, basically Tsun without the Dere. More shit happens and almost dead grandma thinks that her grandson finally has a girlfriend and is so happy and our stupid boy, instead of setting the record straight, plays along with the misunderstanding and goes with it, the rent a girlfriend, plays along too because her grandma is friends with his grandma and wants to keep her job a secret. Thus setting the basic flow and premise of the show for a comedic harmish love story. Heh. This show is not bad, the art and character designs are pretty alright, the main girl is ok, nice lines and pretty enough I guess my main problem is the main boy. What the fuck mother fucker? just tell the truth and let this farce die, but of course if he did there wouldn’t’ be a show and of course i totally expect that our main rent a girlfriend will eventually develop real feelings for our boi and fall for him with some Dere but in the end, they won’t because it’s not how harem shows work. Like, the entire name and premise/perspective of this show is so kinda narrow minded and otaku-centric in nature that it’s kinda baffling. I do suppose “Rent a Girlfriend” does sound softer than potential other names to describe it such as “Rent-a-Hoe”, “Rent-a-Bitch” or “My girlfriend is a bitch, but I pay her for it!!” Yea, never-mind, I guess Rent-a-Girlfriend is better. Not sure if i’ll watch more, might just because this season is so thin on volume, like holy shit there is so little shows, we’ll see.

Ninja Collection – Completely baffling waste of time garbage. Hardly qualifies as animation rather a slide show with effects and narration voice over. Terrible, nothing about this is ninja, maybe shit ninja stories that mildly resemble someone using ninja like arts, but more falls in like with a horror storytelling. Shit, waste garbage.

Monster Musume no Oisha-san – Wow. Another fantasy Monster girl show, it’s the hottest shit for the past few years, so many all at once in such a short period of time too. This one is more tame in the sense that it tries not to be a fanservice show and focus more on the “stories” of the girls featured in the show and the doctor of them rather. The main guy in the show is some young guy/teenager/adult who just so happens to be a doctor of monster girls and travels around and shit helping monster girls. On the side he has a snake/lamia girl as his assistant/partner who is also like a doctor. The first episode features some shit about some royal horse centaur girl and how she can’t fight in tournaments anymore cause of a problem. The way the show protray it is seems like her problem is not physical but a mental or confidence issue but NOPE, turns out she just wasn’t wearing horseshoes so she she eventually got slow and shit. lol wut. What a waste of a opportunity to be deep and a bit more meaningful but yea, it is what it was, needs horseshoes. The girls well, are monster girls and are decent but nothing in comparison to the glory of Ishuzoku Reviewers, we are aiming for wholesome with this one, not hoes. Quality and premise is ok, decent and interesting enough. Might watch more and see how it goes.

Gibiate – Aka the first COVID-19 accurate anime of 2020. lol oh shit, the setting for this one and the opening lead it sounds just like our world, some shit happening, some virus or disease going around making everyone die or go crazy mutant or something. Years past and the world is basically mad max now (of course, our future as well) and we are introduced to some girl who like wants to find the cure to the disease and find a vaccine because the virus after so many years and research, humans still haven’t found a vaccine or cure yet. So yea, that’s the setting. Some shit happens and some ugly samurai are transported to our future and they end up fighting the monsters because what the hell, where’s the battle. They meet up with the girl for some reason is only mildly surprized that they came from the past as if time travel is like a common thing and is all goes, wow i always wanted to meet a real samurai; like what the fuck? that’s the most she can say? not about the time travel? anyways fuck that. noone also int he mad max world cares that they are from the past and they do some shit. On paper this sounds good but the show is shit low budget to the point where it’s so obvious. Super close zooms in dialog, never showing faces, talking back turned, weird ass transition and scene cuts that make you go what the fuck choppy animation. Shit. Too bad, world is good but the story, characters and quality are terrible. Shit

No Guns Life S2 – Oh boi, return of gun head detective guy Juzo. The first season was good and this one seemed to pick up right after we left off, which is good and bad because i have to familiarize myself with the story. The introduction is not as catchy as the first season, but then again, it’s very rare that it ever does for a S2 opening. Watch.

Shadowverse – lol shit this is still continuing. Will watch for more lulz if i feel like yugioh bootleg.

Koi to Producer – Evol x Love – Some gay shit about a bunch of idol men and the generic producer girl that is supposed to manage them. The most interesting thing about this show is that it has the voice of Jin from Blazblue and Ragna in the show, nice lol. I thought the voice actor for Jin retired since I haven’t heard from him in awhile. In either case this show is not for me and I am not sure who else even for women. All the guys look the same, all slightly different shades for brown colored hair and korean like haircuts but not quite. Yea, not for me, or anyone really.

And there we have it, nothing of particular note, although I will try to watch the following:

Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha, Deca-Dence, Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai!, Kanojo, Okarishimasu, Monster Musume no Oisha-san, No Guns Life S2, Shadowverse
