Anime Review Summer Season

Summer Anime 2021 Overview

And so the Toyko 2020 Olympics came and went without much fanfare and with much sadness of how great it could have been had it not been delayed and ruined because of covid for a year but on the bright side of things, for some reason that means very little or no sports shows this season, which is kind of incredible really since there has consistently been sports shows in the summer for years trying to hype up this moment in time, but alas, I guess they don’t have to pretend or try anymore cause of covid. Aside from that, this overview comes wayyy later than usual cause I was busy watching the Olympics for the past two or so weeks and prior to that and still now, playing Guity Gear Strive on a daily basis for a least a couple hours a day since June when it first came out and the standard FGO rerun/new summer events that occupy most of my chill time. This season is really weird, some shows as of posting is at like episode 6 or 7, halfway done and a few others, only at like 2 or 3. Weird. I guess Olympics pushed some stuff back. Anyways, let’s see what’s to watch this summer season.

Peach Boy Riverside – An interesting show that is basically a loose re-imaging of the tale of momotaro except the main character is a girl and a twin/sister of the girl that was the de facto momotaro of this world and travels with a jokes looking rabbit girl with a rabbit head in a school uniform. The setting is kinda medieval fantasy with castles and ogres and monster stuff but at the same time, some characters have modern looking clothing and whatnot, strange. Yea, this show kinda does it’s own thing and I think that’s fine, I am not sure what this is based off of, if anything but it’s interesting. Either way, the first episode begins with the main girl coming across the bunny monster girl in school uniform and they tell us through their interaction and travel in town that demi-humans like the bunny girl are enemies of humanity even though they are chill, a village gets attacked by an orge and they end up fighting, killing the ogre. The show then hints about the story of momotaro, the peach boy shit and the main girl so yea. The main girl is decently attractive and decent animation/concept/premise. The show itself kept me entertained but has some very questionable cuts and animation decisions, lots of fade to black transition scenes and stuff that could have been done better. Not bad, might watch more, seems promising but you never know with this kind of action/adventure/comedy show.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Sotsu – The continuation of the last last seasons higurashi anime which I had hoped would have finished the show off once and for all, but upon the end of that season, it looks like this franchise can continue on for quite some time, perhaps indefinitely if it really wanted to. I haven’t even watched this first ep of this as I am questioning if it is worth my time to continue it at all if there is no end in sight. I like shows that have stories that finish, not dragged on for literally decades to get done. I haven’t decided if I am going to continue watching this yet, but we’ll see after more reception of how the show is further along or might just marathon it one day when it’s done.

Scarlet Nexus – A anime tie in show to a online action game of the same name. Story takes place in a near future japan where the world has been attacked by unknown alien monsters and Japan has to fight them off, to do so they have formed various para-military groups that train people who want to fight and defeat the monsters. There are schools for these elite fighters and for some reason the entire system has become a bit like the idol industry where the best or elite members are cheered for and ranked for most kills and such like a game or competition in the media and television. The main boy is a boy that is the son of some general in the military so they have high hopes for him and his abilities, there is also a main girl with white hair that also has some family stuff going on but not really hinted at, she is pro. Without getting into too much details further, the main draw for this show is the character designs, which I can only describe as being “modern military street edge punk” which I suppose is another way of saying they look like characters from mobile game ArkKnights, which isn’t a bad thing at all, it’s just that as this type of aesthetic gets more popular it begins to get stale as there is only so much you can do with it. Lest to say the show is alright, with decently attractive designs, a simpleton main guy and cool girl and a unimportant story, I would say this is a good tie-in anime to get people to play the game but honestly, it’s not for me, as aside from the designs, is very generic overall.

Genjitsu Shugi Yuusha no Oukoku Saikenki – Known as “How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom” is another isekai show which puts it’s basic premise on the fact that the main boy is a non-idealistic square that only cares about the ‘now’ in problem solving and how how to fix issues in the short term. Boring, bland and disjointed, the main ass hat is pretty dull and unlikable even when he ends up isekai into a fantasy world with knights castles and shit. Once he has been summoned as the yusha, the kingdom apparently is in dire financial straits and is basically bankrupt and defunct. Some shit happens and he resolves a few small issues and the King thrusts upon him the crown and resigns from being the king, all the while arranging to marry his daughter to the main boy. Of course the princess has no idea of this and doesn’t even know the boy or present in the kingdom at this time. Princess comes and says wtf to former king, and is all like, i ain’t marrying you yushua, yushia be like, sure fine, i was expecting that anyways but at least help with with dealing with this kingdom’s shit, so she does. Acts of being a realist consist of selling the crown jewels and other national treasures to neighboring kingdoms for money and cutting the budget to the military cause there is no war and whatnot. Yea, not exactly exciting and honestly, ‘realist’ is just another way of saying he’s an ideological Machiavellian purist, characteristic of cunning, scheming, and unscrupulousness, especially in politics or rather, heartless and in more sense of the word. “The ends justify the means” even if those means are immoral or cruel is the cornerstone of this way of political thinking and philosophy, which could make for a cool show, but at the end of the day, what I saw is just boring ass shit with hints of a harem. Main girl ok but not that great. Forgettable designs and animation. Next.

Getter Robo Arc – Something that looks like it came out of the 70’s maybe even 80’s and is probably is a sequel of some sorts. I think I have heard of Getter Robo, but I have no idea. Skimmed for like a few seconds, saw old dated ugly ass grandpa designs. Closed that shit, next. Another failure of a mech show.

Mahouka Koukou no Yuutousei – This show is apparently a sequel/retelling of the original Mahouka anime/light novel series that aired almost a decade ago or something as some sort of commemoration project from the point of view of the main girl, the sister of the main boi. The only thing that I remember of this show after watching an ep long ago was that their school uniforms were hideous, one of the most ugly pieces of shit that I have ever seen, some green fabric and flowy long skirt one piece thing for the girls. Horrible. The main girl has the serious hots for her brother and the first episode firmly establishes this as they kinda go shopping together and she blows it out of her mind by saying that it’s a date. oh boy. Aside from brocon tendencies of the main girl, being an alternate retelling of a show that I never watched, I probably knew better than to even bother watching this. Either way, I guess if you watched the original this may be good, but yea, not for me.

Shinigami Bocchan to Kuro Maid – 3D CG show about a boy who is basically king Midas, except when he touches things, they don’t become gold, they die; so yea, that’s not so great. Taking place in a kinda victorian era period, the main boy has a top hat. lol jokes. He lives his life alone in a mansion with his thicc blonde maid, that has big boobs and has the hots for him and constantly teases him and trying to get him to make his move on her, even tho if he does, she will probably die. The first episode is just an exercise in illustrating this relationship and the boy’s sadness to being essentially being disowned/outcast from his wealthy family because of this curse which he got when he was a little kid. The girl is not that good, she has a good personality but her visual design leaves much to be desired same for the boy, who is shorter and wussy much. Add to the fact that this shit is in 3d and you gotta be scraping the bottom of the barrel if you really want to continue this when there are much better alternatives with similar premises. Pass.

D_Cide Traumerei the Animation – It has the text “the Animation” in it, so that’s already a bad sign. So yea, this is some kind of tie in to a mobile game or other game with has “light” arknights design aesthetic, more subtle than Scarlet Nexus but the show itself is in full 3d. Heh, not looking so good. The probably of me watching a show like this that I am not invested in based off a game is pretty rare and this is no exception. Based on a quick skim, the main boy is a faggot and caters to a female audience, although there are girls too. Not bad, but no point, not for me, decent design, but nope pass.

Kageki Shoujo!! – An interesting show about a school that focuses on acting and drama, the main girls of this show are a former idol that quit the industry that wants to get into acting and a no name very tall girl that is kind of clumsy but has a ‘strong core’ as one of the teacher says of her assessment, whatever that means. This school specializes in stage plays and they cycle through various ones that they perform to the public, one being the most prestigious with the role of being the main female role which is some princess/lady or something and the other male equivalent being the prince/noble. All roles regardless of male or female are played by girls and this is an all girl school for aspiring actresses. Both of the main girls proclaim that they want to be the main role so yea, there’s a thing. So yea, you see where this is going, can either be mild women lesbian gay or nothing at all and just jokes fun times/friendship dreaming journey. I have no idea, this show seems to be catered for women so I just don’t know. The premise itself is interesting because the former idol girl has to battle with the fact that she was already famous as an idol and quit and has to deal with that baggage that she doesn’t want to be associated with that anymore and the tall girl, well, she’s nobody but is super optimistic and strong. Not bad art but not for me, pass.

Meikyuu Black Company – The main character of this show looks like a cross between Kamina and Simon from Gurren Lagann and starts off as a unemployed wealthy rich guy that has successfully gained financial independence and no longer has to work having invested in successful stocks, help build several luxury hotels and part-owner of several other business, which all bring in a large amount of passive income, living the life, the dream. That goes to shit zero when he gets isekai into a fantasy world unfortunately and is pissed. What’s more, this fantasy world is not medieval, it’s already been developed and modernized, with cities, electricity and civilization, no monsters to be defeated as the world is in relative peace living with ogres and other monster folk together with humans. Having been dealt a shit hand when his life was perfect, he ends up becoming a manual laborer mining magical gems in his new world, which is basically just a grunt slave wage. With this said, he tries to make the best out of his situation and ends up finding a secret portal in the mines that goes to a place with super high grade gems that will meet his quota easily and earn even more comission/money for his team/himself. Powered by his greed and ambition, he ends up magically enslaving his entire team/department with the help of a magical dragon girl he met with the bribe of good food and basically ends up running a black company operation, basically underground literal slave work to get ahead. Not-Kamina’s plan fails unfortunately and has to start from square one again. Yea, this show is not bad, it’s kind of comedy and jokes with a bit of political work commentary in regards to Japanese work ethic and work in general so that’s cool. Not-Kamina is cool but we’ll see how long that lasts and his dragon girl he got is cute. Very interesting premise, will definitely will try to watch more and hopefully it will end up good. These kinds of shows have a tendecy to drop off after longer story arcs start moving but we’ll see. Not bad.

Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon S2 – What else is there to say about this show? It’s amazing, after the tragedy a few years ago at one of the kyoto animation studio attacks taking one of the producers of the original dragon maid anime, it’s great to see that what happened then didn’t effect the quality of this show at all. Top marks all round, continuing off from the first season, all of the characters are maintained and some new ones join the fray, adding into the chaotic world and daily life of ms kobayashi and her dragon girl harem and collection of friends. The newest addition is red/pink haired dragon girl that is very short but has huge, really huge boobs, so I suppose you can say she is just aligning to the trend recently, set by uzaki and others. The animations is top tier, one of the best for this kind of show and the pacing and direction are spot on, with jokes and serious elements hitting where they need to. Great OP song too. Will watch for sure.

Re-Main – Gay boys water polo sports show for men. One of the few braves shows to even bother while the Olympics are running at the same time. The main twist or pull of this show is that the main blue haired boy got into a car accident and looses his memories of the past few years, basically wiping everything that happened while he was in high school when he wakes up from his coma that he was in for half a year. Apparently the boy doesn’t realize he was a champion pro water polo champion that made middle state and is confused about all the friends and teammates/ people he doesn’t recognize cause he doesn’t remember shit, even his girlfriend. He doesn’t want to play water polo anymore cause he doesn’t remember even getting into the sport so yea, all the while all the friends and shit are trying to make him remember. It’s a nice spin to what is otherwise generic sports gay boy anime so I’m sure it will do fine for some women audiences. Not bad but not for me.

Tsuki ga Michibiku Isekai Douchuu – Shit half assed isekai show that i can hardly remember what the main draw was, I think that he was dealt a shit hand at being ugly and the gods gave him almost no power or lots i can’t remember this shit pull. From my guess this is supposed to be a comedy parodying the entire isekai genre as a whole similar to that of konosuba but the quality is just bad and not funny. He meets some pig faced princess of some savage tribe and ends up fighting a dragon for something which reads his memories of his past life and they decide to form a soul bond cause that’s what dragons do apparently. Dragon turns into some big boob girl and yea, proceed with jokes that may not actually happen. Shit boy, shit idea, shit show. Next.

Shiroi Suna no Aquatope – A former idol decides to quit the city in tokyo and go back home, it’s not really her thing so yea, she just kinda gave up after not being crowned the center in her group/agency so I guess to her it’s what’s the point. She calls her parents that she will be back by the end of the day but for some reason she goes on a random trip to the boonies in some smaller town cause she saw some billboard or PR and just felt like it, i guess because she is depressed. She gets to the town and wanders around and likes it’s country-like feel. All while this is happening, the show focuses on a blue-haired girl doing shit in town, she is hyper and happy going to school and talking to friends, walking to school and so forth, she apparently works at an aquarium and is the manager of it. Some random god of the town or shrine does some shit and talk to the former idol at the beach and play, former idol falls asleep on the beach and is woken up by a social worker who thinks she is homeless, gives her her card and directions to the community center or something. While walking with her luggage she sees the aquarium and goes in, she loves the fish and meets the blue haired girl. To cut it short, the former idol begs the blue-haired girl for a job to work at the aquarium and live in the town, yea it’s that kind of slice of life show. The show has me interested with decent premise and attractive characters so I might watch more of this if the reception is positive or people say it’s worth, but these kinds of show are very low-key so we’ll see what kind of slice of life this takes or if the idol aspect gets involved into the story or not. Not bad, try to watch more.

Hamefura S2 – Ah yes, the continuation of “my live as a villianess”, a unique isekai anime targeted towards women that was actually pretty good. The first season ended cleanly with main girl Caterina surviving from being banished or having an ill fate in her new isekai-visual novel world so even if there was not another season, it would be fine. This continuation however I am not sure what they are going to do, introduce more characters that could cause her demise? Not sure, cause the entire draw of this show was that she was the villian in the game she played and knew the outcome of the story and how to overcome being killed and whatnot; since that goal is already reached, I am not sure if they want to continue with that since technically the world that she molded is very different from the game now and anything that happens is uncharted territory, hard to say it’s a game now, unless for some reason they spin it and say it was a sequel planned to the game. We’ll see how this goes, same animation and character design, not bad. Will try to watch more for sure.

Kanojo mo Kanojo – I suppose this is this season equivalent of a harem which in many regards feels like it takes inspiration from both popular harem animes, “quintuples” and “rent a girlfriend” with the basic premise of a fool boy that can’t make up his mind who is the best girl. The main boy of this show starts off being all lovey dovey with his girlfriend in school, because he always wanted her as a girlfriend for years prior but she finally relented and went out with him. Amidst this joy and proclamation of saying some shit like “i’ll never ever cheat on you” or something of the sort, that same day another girl that he has never met before confesses to him and is all like, oh no, what am I going to do. He wants to decline her because he already has a girlfriend but he just can’t because the girl is so pure and cute; he even told her that he already has a girlfriend but she still wants to pursue him in order to ‘win him over’ or something. So the fool boy does what only would ever happen in anime; he goes to his girlfriend with the girl that confesses to him and introduces her, they get along immediately and hang out for the day and after a long day of fun, asks his girlfriend if he can date this new girl as well. lol what. Of course the reaction from his girlfriend is like what the fuck, but for animes sake he somehow convinces her that it’s ok cause “look at her, she is so good, so cute, so pure” and the girlfriend can’t say anything since after having spent the day together, it’s absolutely true. Thus, she agrees and I suppose the daily life of a pimp baller with two girlfriends the anime begins. YYeaaa, I dunno about this one. The entire premise is so hard to believe, it kinda makes it retarded from a concept standpoint but then again, crazier harem plots have been created so yea, it’s ok. The two girls are alright, decent animation and character designs but much like rent a girlfriend, the main source of hatred from this show is the main boy, which by nature of being the main boy, is extremely undesirable. Not bad but unlikely to watch more unless people say this is amazing.

Vanitas no Carte – Gay vampires and not vampires co-exist together in a victorian world where shit happens and for some reason the main boy is not a vampire but eventually gets a vampire guy working under him which job is to go around and stop rampaging vampires who have ‘lost sight of their true name’ and ‘tell them their true name’ in order to get them straight, cause apparently in this world, much like fate, although completely forgotten about, ‘true names’ has power or something and gives them identity. The main boy’s job is to do that and there is some bullshit lore legend about a blue moon and a blue vampire or something and a book that can fix shit and tell vampires that have forgotten their true name, their names, and hence, they are no longer raging and can die peacefully or maybe or go back to their normal vampire not-savage lifestyle. Obviously targeted towards a female audience but is not bad, I can understand why some may like this. Decent concept, decent gay, animation and character designs are ok but ultimately not for me. Pass.

Cheat Kusushi no Slow Life – Isekai ni Tsukurou Drugstore – A very chill simple slice of life show that is more or less exactly what the name of this show implies, slice of life living isekai show of a reborn/transported pharmacist/alchemist/potion master that runs a drugstore that helps the townsfolk with their daily ailments and problems via the creation and prescription of nice drugs. Yea. A fairly simple show, almost too simple with it’s pastel colors and round forms. The show features a cute wolf girl which is pretty simple cute and a ghost girl that works in the shop as well that act as stable moe points of interests. The first episode is about some random guy that is running away from his wife/girlfriend because she apparently always worried that her husband/boyfriend is going to cheat on her, even tho that is not at all the case and has essentially devolved into a crazy yandere with a knife trying to kill him (literal). Our main boy’s solution to this is basically herbal tea aka drugs that help her sleep and relax more cause she obviously hasn’t been getting much sleep with so much anxiety and stress. Shit works and the client is happy. The End. The show is very mild and doesn’t have much in terms of strong jokes or character personalities, even the wolf girl is kind of one note, same as the main boy. While not bad as a concept, the execution and actual content of the show leaves much to be desired as the way the show is, it produces an almost kids school kind of feel, which I am not entirely sure was the intent.

Uramichi Oniisan – On paper the premise of this show is fantastic. It’s about an early thirty year old who used to be a competitive gymnastic but ends up becoming a host at a children kids show, kinda like blues clues or barney, sesame street kind of deal. On camera is he as you would expect, super hype and optimistic because he has to be, be behind his fake smile and squinted half closed eyes is a man that is broken and has lost all hope in society and humanity, a ultimate pessimist, jaded in everything and basically mentally dying on the inside. Lest to say, he actually hates his gig, and everyone who actually knows him, knows this too, which is where the majority of the comedy and gags center on. This sounds great right? Yea, but the problem is that the execution is done very poorly, the scenes; the way they are cut, the entire flow of the show, is just awkward and slow moving, too slow to produce any real laughs or maintain any kind of cohesive narrative. It’s a shame because if this was done by a better studio or better director/producer, this could have been jokes, but it seems they missed the mark on this one and the resulting show is just boring and slow. Too bad, next.

Seirei Gensouki – Another forgettable isekai shit this time with the spin being that the dead reborn boy used to be a kendo boy in the modern times and is reborn into fantasy world etc etc yadda yadda you get the idea. New world he ends up as a boy, that is poor, for some reason he basically inherited the body and mind that was already living, similar to another show with some blue haired girl or something that likes books. He is with bandits for some reason and they kidnapped some princess or something. He walks around and castle girls in disguise are looking for princess, he helps them even though they don’t trust him and yea, he saves the princess. They take him in to interrogate him because they don’t believe that he is innocent and beat him, only later when one of the girls says that it’s true and bring the princess to they stop. Some other shit happens and the story begins time jump and the boy is a swordboy that also has alot of magic power because of course he does. There are a few cute girls in this but still largely forgettable and generic. Next, getting tired of this kind of shit.

Tantei wa Mou, Shindeiru. – Known as “the detective is already dead’, this show looks at first very promising from the first episode. It has mystery, a cute detective girl with white hair and action and good animation, you would think this is a formula for success but unfortunately, as it turns out this is not the case, as it’s being dubbed as one of the biggest bait and switch anime disappointments in recent memory. One of the small advantages of writing these reviews so fucking late is that you can gauge how good a show is doing after the first episode from social media and reddit. So as of this writing, this shit is already like half done, at episode 6 or 7 (fuck) and the reviews are not good. The biggest problem of this show is that the best episode is actually the first episode, after that it goes vastly downhill, mainly because the rest of the show doesn’t even feature mystery or much of the white haired detective girl, since she’s ‘already dead’ by the time the show actually starts; this fucking show isn’t a mystery show at all; at it’s core it’s a harem show. Oh boy, people were expecting mystery, what they got was cute girls, and not even good ones at that. Mediocre at best is what this show can be described as and even then, that’s being generous. The highlight of this show however being that Hololive Fubuki and Matsuri has a cameo segment in episode 3 as hosts on some idol tv program, which was great. It’s a shame that this show turned out not what people were expecting and apparently the original light novel author has apologized to people watching the anime for not being a mystery show as the first episode implied. What a wasted opportunity, weak author, couldn’t write a mystery, just made it a harem.

Bokutachi no Remake – I only watched half of the 45 minute first episode because that is about where the normal episode length would end and honestly I thought it had ended but yea. This show is basically about a man in his early thirtys (seems like this is become a big trend lately?) which after much struggle and hardship trying to break into the video game industry, finds himself unemployed and living back at home with his parents because he has no money and thinks he is a failure. He sees on you tube the announcement of a new game by a group of creators known as the ‘platinum generation’ a group of creatives about the same age as him that have far more success and fame in the industry and gets sad and more depressed. He reflects on the past 10 or so years of his life and regrets most of his actions and choices, for instance, going to university for like accounting and business even tho he had no interest in it and doing nothing with the degree once he graduated and tried to go into the games industry anyways. What makes it even more painful was that he was actually accepted into the same prestigious art/design university that all of the ‘platinum generation’ creatives went to 10 years ago; he literally missed his opportunity to learn, grow and befriend the people who would become so successful years later because they would be around the same age. Feeling sad and shit, he goes to sleep. Surprise bitch, you know how we do, time has been turned back to 10 years ago just before making his choice of what university to go to and he gets the opportunity to ‘remake’ his future, a future where he takes the art school route and he can meet the ‘platinum generation’ even before they become famous. At this point I thought the show was over and closed it but it continued. Because this is anime, a good chunk of the ‘platinum generation’ are cute girls because of course they are, gotta kinda make this harem-like somehow, so yea. This show is promising, it has me interested and probably has some good slice of life/drama/harem thing going on but it’s too similar to many other things, it’s been done so many times with Erased being probably the best example of this kind of story that even with the art/design school setting, it’s not very fresh or new so I am unlikely to watch this. Not bad, but the premise is done and over with.

Obey Me! – Gay show with pretty boys that are embodiment of the seven deadly sins or something, 3 minute show. whatever next.

Sonny Boy – Rotoscoping bullshit mystery survival game, try hard edgy bullshit. Skimmed this shit hard, yea yea, it’s shit. Next.

Night Head 2041 – 3d cg show that is kinda cyberpunkish and has neon colors and shit in the future. Some battle future shit and some squad i dunno. skimmed this shit, kinda targeted towards women cause the boys are bishonen gay looking although I think they are trying to appeal to all since there is a few girls that look alright. 3d is getting better but still not there, this is one of the better one but still whatever.

Love Live! Superstar!! – After not finishing the last love live anime mainly because of it’s lack of direction/goal and questionable character choices (a love live anime that is not about competing in a love live competition is a show about what? it seems like the franchise is getting back to it’s roots with a central girl that likes idols and can sing but can’t sing in front of a audience as she freezes and chokes hard. She goes to a school where students are divided into the general curriculum and the ‘special music students’ which are part of a program that focuses on singing and music. Kanon, our new main orange haired girl is not one of the music students although she tried out and audition to get in, she failed and choked because the pressure. Main girl meets her first friend Keke Tang, a Chinese shanghai exchange student which is a bit off putting because the first few appearances she puts on this bad Chinese-Japanese accents, so chinky, feels and sounds awkward; then all of a sudden she drops it and then speaks perfect Japanese. lol sure what. Doesn’t even look Chinese with like light brown hair with purple highlights and blue eyes (wtf). So anyways, Keke loves idols and declares in class introductions that she wants to create a school idol club. oh boy. So imagine how the music students feel when a non-music student wants to create a school idol club? weird right, and that’s what one of the school council music students think too, she confronts her saying that idols are not suitable or welcome at their school because they lower the image and standard of the school. Keke fights back and is determined to do it and has the forced supported from Kanon as well, even tho the other girl will probably be in the group a swell and secretly likes idols too.  The remainder of the episode is the two hanging out cause chink girl is simping hard for Kanon because she heard her sing and loves it, wants to create the club together. Yea. This is definitely alot better than the Nijisaki school of whatever last time love live offered. So far the main girl Kanon is alot more likeable and has an interesting spin on her character with inherent flaws that the previous show and the Chinese girl Keke is tolerable, at least for now. Solid good animation and character design, good music and dance, love live is back in form. Hopefully this one turns out good, will try to watch more for sure.

Megami-ryou no Ryoubo-kun. – The first thing you see in this show, literally like 10 or 30 seconds in is naked boobs, uncensored by tv standards and for that it is already on good terms. The basic premise of this show is that there is a little wussy boy that is kinda abandoned caused his grandpa that took care of him is now dead, he has nowhere to go nor a cent to his name. He gets picked up in some weird circumstance where he ends up becoming the ‘dorm mother’ to a girls university apartment building that as you expect it, is filled with beautiful big boobed girls where he gets teased by the various girls whether intentionally or unintentionally due to their hotness. He is supposed to help cook, clean, and help out in any way he can but yea can’t help but be distracted by the girls and be put into comical situations that can be interpreted as sexual, that’s the basic premise and source of humor for this show. The girls themselves are very unique with varying archetypes and loosely fall into the theme of them being ‘goddesses’ of the apartment although they don’t really play much on that, since I thought they were ‘actual’ goddesses of lore but as the episode continues, it’s just a metaphor. The best thing about this show as mentioned is that it has alot of naked boobs and butts, with no censoring which is kind of odd probably because the situations are just playful comedy and pure fan service. The girls look good enough and decent crisp lines and animation, although outside of that it’s just a decent comedy/gag/fanservice anime that I haven’t seen around in a while. While not bad, I am unlikely to watch more of this cause outside of the strong gimmick of naked uncensored boobs, it can only go so far.

Deatte 5-byou de Battle – Dumb done before battle royale anime which has been done before where a group of randoms are abducted and secretly undergo some kind of magical or science experiement where all of the people are given powers or abilities and are forced to play a game where they fight each other to figure out who is the best. The main boy is annoying, thinks he’s better than everyone else and just wants to die cause daily regular life is so boring to him but he likes puzzles and games of risk/the mind. After he gets pulled into this battle royale thing by some purple clothes top hat wearing cat-like girl, the is hyped cause he can now have fun. sure boy sure. At the end of the day his ‘power’ is the ability to manifest any ability onto himself as long as he is able to convenience his opponent that he actually has that ability, if he does, then it becomes real; so basically real life bluffing. At least that’s what he says to people, but the reality is it’s just an illusion, he has the ability to ‘incept’ or make people believe that he has the power and in their minds, make them see things that are not possible and hopefully make them give up without actually fighting for real. The power itself and premise of this show is interesting enough but too many undesirable factors persist that make this show a not watch. The animation is ok for now but the characters themselves are kinda ugly and the boy more generic and unlikable than anything, it doesn’t help that the girls in this show are forgettable. This is one of those shows primed to just get worse after every episode, both in animation quality, story and direction. Nope.

Heion Sedai no Idaten-tachi – A fairly unique show that has crazy ass pastel color pallete and neon colours with a kind of pokemon/digimon character design direction which is honestly pretty shit. Something about gods or Idaten or something being the guardians of the world for thousands of years being able to fight off ogres or kaiju monsters something. My interpretation is that there is a group of angel like demi-god people that train and shit to fight off demons, but the demons haven’t been around for awhile so they are pretty lazy and chill or lack. These Idaten are like super strong shit, they can have a hole blown out of their chest and heart and still be ok, they can regenerate easily. The demi-god people look like kids or teenagers, normal humans however and are just around. Some shit happens and a mad scientists wants to revive the demons and so he does, in the process making the Idaten work to defeat the giant like monster thing. Shit happens and the episode ends. Yea whatever, this is totatlly not my kind of show. Pass.

Jahy-sama wa Kujikenai! – Jahy-sama is the newest kid on the block in terms of slice of life comedy taking inspiration from Gabriel dropout and the devils a part timer in that the main character, Jahy was once ruthless demon lord in the demon world and had everything until the entire demon world was destroyed by a magical girl and all the inhabitants which didn’t die from the destruction of their realm, had to transport and flee into the human world. Jahy; normally a tall, medium sized boob, dark skinned, long purple haired adult demon girl with wings in the demon world, finds herself demoted to being a child version of herself in a white tshirt due to the lack of demonic ‘mana’ in the human world because her normal form takes too much energy to maintain. Due to bad luck and the such, she becomes basically homeless and broke but is given a job at a restaurant and an apartment when a kind women picked her off on the streets. When she is working she transforms into her adult form because it only makes sense but it uses alot of mana, so it doesn’t last long. Her goal is to rebuild/retake the demon kingdom and regain her glory but trying to collect mana gems, which are scattered around the world that will help her gain her magic power and such but struggles of course because it’s anime comedy show. Jokes. The entire show is basically what would happen if you take satania from gabriel dropout and make her poor and have her work in a restaurant trying to make ends meet. Indeed, the show knows this as well and even cast the same voice actor as satania also uzuki, perfect; it’s like she was made to play this type of character with lots of yells, screams, faces, personality, exclamations of smugness, only to be beaten down and bullied shortly after whether intentionally or not. Beautiful. With top level animation, great character designs and crisp lines, top notch voice acting and a jokes premise that takes inspiration from any other similar shows, looks like dark skin Jahy-sama is in this season! Will watch for sure.

Fumetsu no Anata e – “take him” continues onto this season and will continue to be watched. If this show keeps up and ends well, it’s definitely a top contender for top best 5 anime this year.

With that said, this season’s volume is medium although honestly light on super high profile must watch shows, good shows, but not tower of simp levels of korean hype that for some reason everyone fell for last year. You can honestly zone out this entire season of anime and probably wouldn’t make much of a blimp in the general anime watching culture sphere outside of maybe dragon maid s2 and Jahy-sama and love live if your into that. It’s an alright season, but one that honestly you can forget about if your busy with other stuff.

Will try to watch for sure: Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Sotsu, Shiroi Suna no Aquatope, Fumetsu no Anata e, Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon S2, Hamefura S2, Love Live! Superstar!!, Jahy-sama wa Kujikenai!
